Look man.

They made the red stuff as vague as possible in order to keep you from asking these kinds of questions. They call it "red matter " ffs.

I think you just need to relax and enjoy the movie/life in general. I wish there were some other way I could phrase this advice.

i enjoyed the movie, u dont see me complaining about alien faces or sound in space or w/e right?

even leaving all the red crap out, what about my point about old spock? why wouldnt nero want to see old spock get pissed that he couldnt do shit about his planet? especially when this old dude would prolly instantly dies if sent to a planet like that and theres no guarantee he even watches the sky.

that has nothing to do with sci fi or weird explanations. its just obvious and u shouldnt have to suspend disbelief and enjoy a movie by turning off basic common sense

Picture this: you're marooned on a hostile planet by a man who says he's gonna head over to your home planet (which you can see in the sky periodically) and blow it up. You start a harsh few hours; you live in a freezing cave with nothing but a small fire for warmth and god knows what to eat. The only thing keeping you going is hope that your planet might survive; your eyes are fixated upon the sky. Clouds cover your planet most of the time, and you're overcome by apprehension during that time. This goes on for a while.

Now, one of two things happen:

a) You see your planet being destroyed. Your tormentor has gotten the ultimate revenge: he has made you watch while he destroys your planet.
b) The destruction is covered up by clouds. Over a period of many hours, you slowly realize, to your horror, that the planet is no longer there. You stagger over to the Starfleet base across the ridge, hoping beyond hope that you've simply missed the planet in the sky over and over again. When it's confirmed that the planet of your people has been destroyed, you fall to your knees, completely devastated.

Sounds pretty shitty for Spock. Maybe Nero was acting rationally.

they used one drop of it for the planets core, but for making it in space without a planet ALL of it exploded.

For its station and purpose, Star Trek was a great movie.

it is funny that you say this because star trek is one of the highest rated / best reviewed movies of the year...

Which goes to show how low peoples' expectations for sci-fi films has gotten =_=;;

So, tell me. What good sci-fi films have been released in the past 3 or so years? I'm curious, I enjoyed Star Trek immensely. I want to see what passes (to some people) as "Good" sci-fi.

EDIT: I think I come off as a dick with this post, but I'm just truly curious. :D

i just saw the new star trek on DVD and it wasnt bad but wtf at some of the ridiculous plot holes.

Nero dropped Old Spock on the ice planet to watch Vulcan be destroyed. He told Old Spock that he was going to destroy Vulcan. The idea was to give Old Spock the pain of watching his world die, the same pain that Nero felt when he say his own world die. That's not a plot hole.

The plot stretch is Young Spock dumping Kirk on the same ice planet. You'd think he'd just get locked up in the brig, but we are supposed to think that all the conflict between the two made Young Spock really hate Kirk and emotionally overreacted, which I guess sorta works.

As for drilling into a planet, ya that seems unnecessary. I think they made the drilling a part of the plot because if they didn't have to drill, there would be no time to stop them.

No. The whole plot and the whole dialog was terrible. Other action movies have way better ones.

First off the 'plot' is basically a copy of Star Trek Nemesis. There's some incredible bad guy that is going to destroy the earth using some weapon with [put silly technobabble here]. He has a big big strong ship. Somehow bigger and stronger than any other ship.

And then somehow he's stopped.

This movie is also incredibly silly in wanting to use the old characters but not wanting to use the old characters. So they make an alternative universe so they can have the same names and one-liners but with no restrictions. WTF.

The cinematic style is also terrible. It has some of the worst shaky camera and partial shots of any movie so far.

It has got to be one of the most unintelligent movies I have seen in a while.

Any first year literature student can write better plot and dialogue.

How about the fact that all aliens are humanoids who apparently speak english. Whatever, it was a great and entertaining movie to watch.

It's very easy to justify that and then suspend disbelief. If aliens aren't humanoids you can't have actors for them. They don't actually speak English as they use an universal translator. But they gloss over this because if each line in the movie had to be translated it would be unwatchable.

In the end it turns out that most human-looking races are genetically related which is probably a questionable decision on the writers but yeah.

When I watched this movie I stopped like 5 times because it was too terrible for me to watch on. It was a very disturbing movie.
The plot holes were probably the best part of this movie. Imagine these totally talentless hacks desperately try to fix those plot holes. Can't have been pretty. It's good they just gave up because really in the end it didn't matter anyway.

It was actually explained on The Next Generation that an advanced race of humanoids evolved over 4 billion years ago and seeded the primordial oceans of planets across the Milky Way with proto DNA that caused evolution to take a similar course on planets removed by many thousands of light years. Which means not only did humans evolve to be the dominant species on those planets but even other animals and plants look startlingly similar to those on Earth.

I have to agree though that the plot holes in the movie are pretty gaping.

A mining vessel from the twenty forth century defeats an armada of 47 Klingon birds of prey? Really?

Your expectations for writing cohesion and general quality should immediately be halved when viewing any science fiction/fantasy film.

I think you guys don't get how hard it has to be in order to make a plot work in a science fiction film... I mean when you are filming some reality movie take "Oceans Eleven" for example its very easy to have the plot work because as a writer you have been spending your entire life in the world in which your movie is going to exist... that makes it pretty easy to fit everything together because you know all the laws of physics and human behavior that are going into it.

Same thing goes for most movies whose setting is Earth in the present or past.

But when you are dealing with somewhere in space... in the future... with aliens... with alien technology...

Its really hard to intuitively put all that together in a cohesive manner that makes everything perfect for everyone watching the movie.

Thus "you gotta skate"
By which I mean, just assume that's how things work out in this reality and laugh at the old Star Trek lines and new approaches to the characters which you loved so much from TOS...

@GeneralStan: Remember thats like 2 centuries in the future... advanced technology always beats numbers (example the borg... they kill freaking tons of ships with one cube in "First Contact")
Can you ever argue in favor of something without first proving it?

SF is supposed to be intelligent. And writing always needs to be coherent and of high quality no matter how silly or purely special effect-driven the movie.

A plot in an SF movie is the same as a plot in any story. They always work for the same reasons. SF just has a different setting and there's room to explore some philosophical issues rather easily.

Yes it requires some imagination. Yes, there is suspense of disbelief. The art of SF is having unrealistic stuff and make it believable because everything else is so realistic. SF really needs better dialogue and a more thoughtful plot than any modern day story.
