ATI and Nvidia have always been relatively even in terms of value, reliability, performance, and support. There are horror stories of driver and compatibility issues for both, and high praise for both as well. At times one has the lead over the other, but eventually the other catches up and the cycle starts again. As of now, ATI offers both better value and better performance (the Radeon 5970 beats out TWO GTX295s when overclocked). Drivers and compatibility is good, although this varies from game to game.

I bought my first ATI card about 5 months ago (4850) and I haven't had many driver issues at all. Although with Team Fortress 2's recent update I got a few bsods but I think that had to do with the sound card deciding it wanted to be on two IRQ channels instead of one, and one of those happened to conflict with the card. I have no idea why that would happen on its own.

I haven't purchased an ATI card since the first Radeons came out (2002ish?), so it's good to hear that they've cleaned up their act since then.
