Just built a $1500 i7 940 / Radeon 5870 system, a good upgrade from the aging athlon64 3200+ / 7900 GS system that I've had for 5 years.
I installed all the basic utility programs, and tried out a few benchmarks. This thing was fast - I spent a good hour just having fun with winrar, amazed at how fast I can rar and unrar files now. Then I played a few games, the major titles -crysis, far cry 2, etc all at 1920x1200 with maxed details averaging perfect FPS.
But then, it's 4:00 am now, and I'm bored with thing. So I installed SC again and realized that playing BW is still the most fun thing I can do with a computer.
With SC II postponed again and again, what a waste of 1.5 grand that I just dished out X_X

i7 and 5870 is probably a bit too much if you only plan to play Sc2
But nice config.

lol this is what I did over the summer, except my specs were lower and the whole system was a bit cheaper
i7 920 4890 velociraptor $1200
and i just used it to play starcraft. at least it allowed me to stream
|
I wish I had the mindset I'm lacking to be able to play StarCraft. Every time I install it, I just end up trying to play with friends, or playing the campaign and a few games against the computer. Guess I just lack the competitive desire to get into StarCraft. I know that if I just had the motivation to play it, I'd love it, and it would keep my attention for awhile, but that's the biggest hurdle for me.
Nice computer, nonetheless. :D

Do you have a /chomp command?

I win. $3,500 :D
+ Show Spoiler +Ok, ok. So I may have a few other games on here like Crysis, TF2, EvE Online, etc., but SC is still #1

My system still beats yours in performance. $1500 was mainly for the CPU/RAM/GPU/Motherboard/Case, rest of the components (HDD, Optical Drive, Speakers, etc) I salvaged from the previous setup.
Your i920 and two 285 in SLI setup would roughly cost the same as my system, without all the other non-core components considered. But mine still beats yours in performance

I'm curious as to how your system is performing - I wanted to get the exact same setup (i5 and 4890) but since I had the cash I decided to get a system 1 tier higher.
the i5 750 and 4890 are still very capable, what resolution do you run your games on? On max setting? Decent FPS?

What is with people and i7s... for gaming, Phenom II would be my pick.

4890 doesn't handle Dx11 and you will need a really big PSU with a crossfire.

That being said I do plan on building a $1000ish rig in about 3-6 months.

I used to be into creating rigs, but now I have no idea what your talking about. As far as I know radeon produced cheap onboard video cards, or something worse than gforce anyway. And i7? Something from apple I guess
I took over the old computer from my dad when mine finally burned after 7 years of use. Combined with a free CRT monitor I picked up at a strangers home, it's the ultimate sc rig.
$0 - I win.

But i feel so comfortable now with a P2350, an Athlon II x4, a 4870, 4 Gb DDR3 and a legit Seven pro 64. The funny thing is that i only play bw and other old games but now at least i can listen music, dl and play at the same time Tried a couple of more recent games but it was more as benchmarks than for real enjoyment.
The most important uppgrade was the screen. That's just way better to play bw on a 23". If you have to change one thing to play bw/surfing it is definitly the screen.

Yeah, god Blizzard just release the game sometime

At least you didn't buy a Mac LOL

The company is ATI (or AMD nowadays), Radeon is just a brand name. Also, they've been producing discreet video cards that provide good competition for Nvidia since like... the first Radeon, in 2000. At times they even had the performance edge over Nvidia, and right now the competition is fierce and pretty well-balanced.

Wow, ATI became AMD? Who took who?

I bought new computer in the summer and end up the same. Just playing bw on it. I tried all the new fancy games and it just bores me after an hour of playing. I guess i have to wait for sc2 and d3
|
to OP: By the way, do not regret it. I spent 1300$ in the casino last night, so be happy that you bought a computer with that instead of something like this.
|
Ya I have Crysis, TF2, L4D2, and some other games on my comp but SC still takes the cake. I upgraded my computer last year thinking SC2 would be out by now -_-.

On Nvidia vs GeForce: I've purchased maybe 6 ATI cards in my lifetime, and every single one has made me swear I would never make the same mistake again. Driver problems, compatibility issues, etc. Are they still like that or are they actually pretty decent now?

soooo jealous of all you people who have enough money to buy computers. *glares at his 1024x768 CRT

ATI and Nvidia have always been relatively even in terms of value, reliability, performance, and support.
There are horror stories of driver and compatibility issues for both, and high praise for both as well. At times one has the lead over the other, but eventually the other catches up and the cycle starts again.
As of now, ATI offers both better value and better performance (the Radeon 5970 beats out TWO GTX295s when overclocked). Drivers and compatibility is good, although this varies from game to game.

Cool man. U gonna have a nice computer for at least 2 years!!!!

I bought my first ATI card about 5 months ago (4850) and I haven't had many driver issues at all. Although with Team Fortress 2's recent update I got a few bsods but I think that had to do with the sound card deciding it wanted to be on two IRQ channels instead of one, and one of those happened to conflict with the card. I have no idea why that would happen on its own.

I haven't purchased an ATI card since the first Radeons came out (2002ish?), so it's good to hear that they've cleaned up their act since then.

My pc gaming will die with BW. Hopefully I'd be cool if I could run diablo3 on my piece of shit but thats doubtful.
PS3 ftw

That's a really nice system. Get some new games to take advantage of it!

It seems Intel is getting screwed by everyone lately (EU, now FTC)
