Is there a way to connect it with a wired modem, connecting the modem-side ethernet cable to the laptop and other end to desktop?
Also, is it safe to switch monitors without shutting it/computer off?
Thanks guys.

edit: Wait I'm retarded, if your desktop had wireless you'd just be using the wireless to begin with my bad >.>

On your laptop (in XP), go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> select both connections (wireless and wired) -> right click -> bridge connections. Yeah, this sounds correct to me. Back in the old days you used to not be able to connect two similar devices (ie two end devices such as a laptop and a desktop) through a standard straight-through cable (which is the ethernet cable that you use to say connect a desktop to a router). These days network adapters are smart enough to detect the type of cable that you're using and they adjust their messages accordingly. You shouldn't need a crossover cable if you're working with even remotely new hardware. Then you should be able to follow the directions given by haxors, or follow the instructions on whatever site told you to use a crossover. Also, yes it is safe to switch monitors while the computer's powered on. I do it all the time.

On your laptop (in XP), go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> select both connections (wireless and wired) -> right click -> bridge connections. ok my laptop is on Korean, so I went to network connections via control panel, selected both LAN and wireless, and right clicked and bridged it. (There was another connection, 1394) Now my Network Connections show, under Network Bridge (in Korean), 'Network Bridge', Wireless Network 3', and 'Local Area Network', but there's an x at wireless network. When I double-click wireless network 3, it says with other things, 'Windows cannot establish this wireless network. Any help?

Yes, this is what is supposed to happen. If it worked, you should be able to use the wired connection on your desktop. What type of behavior do you see there?

I just lose internet connection on my laptop, and when I try to fix it my intel wifi program says I'm connected to dafault(?) SSID network. Do I need to do anything on my desktop?

Hmm, this isn't supposed to happen You should still have internet access on your laptop, and also on your desktop of course. It has always worked for me. You can try a different method - Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). (Go ahead and right click -> delete the network bridge you made). On your laptop, right click on the LAN connection -> Properties -> Internet Connection Sharing -> check the top box. If that doesn't work, read up on the help info for this ("learn more about ICS").

Mine is quite old - a 22inch (24?) CRT, NEC which I think I bought in '04 or '05. Ack I might have to adjust to such a much smaller screen now.

Keep in mind that some monitors have display (resolution and/or wideness) limitations. For example, I can't use a 1400x1050 resolution on my square 17'' monitor.

I connected my monitor to my laptop using the 15-pin thing without turning either off but I can't switch it even though I'm pressing my monitor switch hotkey (Fn+F7 on my laptop, a Vaio VGN-Z36LD).

Is there a way to check if my laptop recognizes the monitor? I went to Device Management (or whatever it is called) and under monitor it has 'default' and 'plug and play'. I assume pnp is my monitor but my hotkey (fn+f7) doesn't seem to work.

I don't know why the hotkey isn't working ... are you sure you are doing it correctly (pressing the correct function key, nothing weird like numlock going on, etc)?

I will buy a crossover cable today. Is there anything I need to know before I buy one, like which type to buy? Oh and just to be reassured, there's not way to connect it with a wired router?

Thanks to haxorz and nexis, though I did it by setting up a network connection wizard. Nevertheless I am happy! Good night all!
