I want to kill mine.
We were friends last year so we decided to room together this year, and I've honestly tried my best to live with them in harmony. I've taken out the garbage 20/30 times, did their dishes when the sink piled up, bought groceries which they ate, etc etc. I'm a pretty generous and easy-going person, and I've been trying to get them to do their share of the housework but so far I've failed epically. So after a while I just stopped caring as well, and now... let's just say a pigsty is for sure cleaner than our suite.
For example, the garbage can in the kitchen was full, I haven't used it at all since I ate out often last week, and of course they were too lazy to take it out. So after it overflowed, they just started to throw shit around the garbage can, and now there's this general garbage dump area right in the living room / kitchen area, slowing starting to decompose. Also, I take shits in the lounge toilet on my floor because I honestly can't use the bathroom in our suite, I tried and puked so I won't try again. Today when I came home, the door knob was fucking greasy as shit because one of them had KFC for dinner. WTF? seriously. Countless other acts like these.
I'm getting royally pissed off now, I can't even bring people back to my place because it's so fucking dirty. I've another 5 months to live with these people... How the fuck do you deal with inherently dirty pigs who don't give the slightest fuck about hygiene?

that is fucking disgusting :|
do they have no shame? do they not bring friends or girls over?

I won't say that this is a surefire solution, but I had this problem before. What I did was I just didn't return to the room much, studied in the library, hung out in the science building between classes and really only came back to sleep. I think my room mate realized how bad it was himself after awhile, and after that it was much better.
However, the easiest solution I can see is to just set up a schedule like I do w/ my current room mate. We always alternate who takes out the trash/cleans sink and it's become something that's mandatory for us, so there's really no hard feelings when one continually nags the other about it because it's his 'turn' anyways. Basically make cleaning everything structured and required rather than something someone has to take the initiative every once in awhile to do.

If you're not exaggerating this is by far the most disgusting thing ever. How can you honestly be lazy enough not to take out the trash. WTF didn't these guys have mothers.
I honestly think things are beyond repair at this point. Maid service is a good idea if you don't want to deal with this anymore. The only hard thing about this is getting them to pay for their respective parts.

also talk to them
be like wtfbbq GROW UP
did the same thing with my roomie and he straightened up. kids gotta learn to live like adults sometime.
|
id say either sit them down and tell them whats up or get pissass angry at them and see if that makes them feel bad enough for them to get their act together

They're your friends and roommates for the rest of the year. Tell it to them straight or it's never gonna get fixed properly.
I mean, it's not like they're gonna be pissed off at you. If they have any common sense they should completely understand.

Some people are just messy and don't care. My roommate and I a few years ago had a similar situation with trash building up, etc, but we still both had girlfriends over all the time. When I get busy with something the first thing that I stop doing to make up for it is cleaning. You would do well in the future to ask if someone is the messy or clean type before rooming with them, since obviously you prefer the clean type. As for what you should do now, you might be able to slightly remedy the situation by proposing a chore system that everyone cleans a certain part of the suite every two weeks or something.
|
Sounds pretty brutal. I guess this why you should find out more about people before living with them, or do what I do and refuse to have roommates. Living alone or with your gf are the only acceptable living situations imo.

nonononono there's a difference between messy and what he's dealing with he's dealing with pigs throwing garbage ON THE LIVING ROOM FLOOR because you're too lazy to take out the trash is a cut above "messy"

Make up a schedule or if worst comes to worse - talk to your suite building RA. That's really unacceptable. Or hire a maid and make them pay for it. That is just disgusting.
|
If that were happening in my house I would start getting in peoples' faces.
Don't give them any slack. Don't say 'please', or 'guys', and especially don't fucking say 'it would be cool if'. Just say clean your fucking shit up you prideless cunts or I'm going to call Omar up in here and cut your fucking legs. Ok I been watching too much of the Wire but you get the idea.
|
Get some hot girls to come over and tell them how dirty they are...men are always more interested in listening to something they don't want to when there's a pretty face involved

Hide their weed and tell them it will be easier to find it if the apartment was clean.
|
I got to where anytime they left something in a room that it shouldnt be in (laundry in the living room, trash laying around, etc etc) I would just pick it up and set it at the base of their bedroom door. They got the hint after the first couple of times of stepping in a bowl of rotting chili.
|
Omg I hate spoiled bitch room mates.
Just tell them to clean their shit up and make a schedule where each of you alternates between rooms. One week someone does kitchen, one does bathroom, etc. (obviously you each clean your own room.)

What was it that our linguistics teacher said when he mentioned the main difference between humans and like, everything else?
Can't remember for the life of me.

I feel sad for the OP
However, I have a slightly different problem..... my roommate snores like demon (?)( I don't know. Can't think of anything better right now)...... causing me to have a lot of difficulty sleeping : (
Some advice is needed. preferably those who save troubles sleeping too. Should I fix myself or him?

put a cross in the room.

Or drop some "holy" water in his mouth.
|
if he snores there's a good chance he can't do anything about it. id say get ear plugs.

this reminds me of that renting out on your own guide or w/e.
Live by yourself imo. It's the most convenient way without having to suffer through this. I had roomies once and quickly learned that although you can try to lead the camel to the water, who says they are going to drink? Stupid analogy but im sure you'll get the point.

i love living in my own room <3 and i have 2 house mates and we just take turn to take out the garbage.
and man, are they fat?
|
Tell them to clean and if they don't listen kick them out.
|
man that sounds like a nightmare. isn't there any way for you to find a new place or something??
|
I would just never interact with them. Buy a mini-fridge and hotplate, and use the fire-escape to come and go. Crawling out of the window is a small price to pay for not having to walk through their mess.
Edit: I guess this assumes you're housemates and not roomates... big difference. If you're roomates well then just get a new place.
|
O.o Sounds exactly what I'm going through right now. At the moment, (considering I went through something similar last year), i'm just kind of trying to ignore it. Honestly, I wish people DID clean up after themselves. The worst part - the largest contributer to the squalor has anger management issues, and is insanely defensive (to the point of absurdity). He will complain about how dishes are piling up in the sink, when 90% of them are his. Also, one time he borrowed one of my roommate's car, backed up into a pole and scratched some of the paint, and he got legitimately angry at the car lender when he was somewhat upset and wanted him to pay (oh my) $10. I just don't get people sometimes.
|
live and learn. i had shitty roommates once before too. you really should try and voice your opinion on the matter.
|
Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate it.
Basically I'm living at a friend's place right now, I've taken my things out of the bathroom/living room/kitchen, and I lock my room door pretty much just using it as storage.
I'll see what happens after a while, if they clean up after themselves it would be best, but if not I'll just call my Reslife coordinator and have them thrown out. Once that happens random new roommates will be assigned, so hopefully they'll be better. I can't just pack up and leave because there are still 5 months left on the Res contract :S Thanks again!

Funny, I always hear americans talking about their roommates at uni, like it's some tradition that you should share room with another person. In Sweden almost no one has a roommate, we all live in apartments on our own. Many people live in a dorm though but not in the same friggin room/apartment.
How do you manage to stay mentally sane? Oh wait, I guess you don't lol
OP, you should yell at their lazy asses and tell them to either clean up their acts or get a fucking pounding.
|
I don't get people who really don't understand how to live with other human beings. I have had a couple of terrible roommates so far that I had to leave because they didn't understand very basic concepts.
If you have morning classes -- shut off your alarm and get up, I don't want to hear you play the snooze button game. -- don't turn on the T.V, at 7 A.M when you know I don't get up until 10. -- what makes you think slamming doors is ok when I'm sleeping? -- I'm not your mom, I will not wake you up every morning. If I have to get out of bed to shut off your own alarm and you miss your final exam -- deal with it.
god i hated that kid
i'm so respectful with these people but I get nothing back -- so i leave. it's not my job to lecture them on how to be human.

I shared apartment with two really fat dudes for a while. They usually stayed in their rooms all the time, but they liked to leave traces in the kitchen. Like big piles, or staples, of their empty fast food boxes in all colours and shapes. They piled them untill they went from the floor to the roof, then they started a new. Almost like a piece of art.

That's fucking ridiculous. I'm living with two roommates in an apartment and it's going pretty damn well. I mean, sometimes dishes pile or something, but the place is always clean when the weekend comes around and we have girls over. I feel sorry for you man. It's such a bad situation for you cause you're outnumbered by a bunch of messy people.
|
If it's as bad as you say, just talk to the owner of the property. Leaving it that dirty causes permanent damage - they might have to replace carpets and shit. Not cheap.

My flatmate started taking trash out and even clean SOME stuff (he "forgot" the floor, bathtub, sink while cleaning the bathroom) after I sort of stopped caring
yeah, my condolences!
