I've always assumed that the "get back in the kitchen jokes" are poking fun at the stereotype, not poking fun at women.

baking a great dessert requires way more attention than creating a great meal. it's a fucking science and you need to be absolutely exact. if you're making a meal it generally doesnt matter if you take 120 grams of something instead of 100, if you're baking a dessert it might matter if you take 105 instead of 100. it might matter if you heat something for 60 instead of 50 seconds. this depends on the dessert, obviously there are easy ones, but some desserts require amazing precision not to get fucked up.

Ask your grandma what's harder to cook at thanksgiving dinner. Well I guess you don't have that holiday, but whatever feast you might have during a year, and whoever cooks it and doesn't muck it up. People have no idea the amount of work it takes to cook a real meal. Sure, you can boil corn and potatos and fry some kind of meat and call it dinner, but it's not really a meal. Maybe this is my French heritage side speaking though

Imagine you had to bake several pies (making good crust takes a great deal of care), make a variety of custards (there's a lot of care to make it not curdle), melt, temper and shape a variety of chocolates (the speed and temperature can totally alter the texture), etc. On top of that, the presentation has to look good too (icing a cake well is so time consuming).

I didn't read the comments about making sandwiches and staying in the kitchen as ironic or poking fun at stereotypes. I read them as pretty sexist. I think they're not meant seriously - as reflecting a deep chauvinistic bias - but I do think they're the type of comments guys make to each other when they're alone for fun. However, it's still not a cool thing to say, especially on a forum with women on it. It'd be like making a rascist joke and then trying to say you're actually making fun of rascist people. Spurious at best -.-
