but i know this friend of mine who left his computer on for half a year after he finished building it; that happened like 4 years ago and everytime i go to his place i've never seen his computer shut off, so i dunno if he ever broke that 6 month record or if he ever broke his comp

(07:05:33) (@LorDo) uptime: 5d 3h 44m 36s :: record: 3w 4d 2h 1s For this computer (or actually only since last time I reinstalled Windows) I'm not sure I've ever beaten that 42 day streak actually.

Don't want to sound like a troll or something, but don't you think it's a little irresponsible to leave your computer on so much?, i'm not an eco nut or anything, but i don't know what's so hard about turning off your computer when you don't use it, just to save a little power.

Mind spends nights / other times I'm not using it in sleep mode, which takes almost no power at all.

Leaving the computer on has a negligible effect on hardware failure. Booting process used to be harmful because of the stress on the components..........in the early 90s. Now you can turn it on and off as much as you want with no ill effects. My computer is left on 100% of the time. I have gone several months without restarting.

Generally i wouldnt worry too much about turning off your computer vs sleeping it a whole lot. Usually if somethings going to go wrong hardware-wise you'll run into it regardless of your power down routine. Personally i sleep my computer every night and only reboot it when updates require me to.

yma@yma-desktop:~$ uptime 17:53:44 up 29 days, 8:24, 3 users, load average: 0.35, 0.27, 0.22 yma@yma-desktop:~$ Before that, I restarted the computer for some minor configuration change. There is a theory that electronic devices are designed to be switched on all the time as the surge of power when you turn something on does most of the damages to the computer.

I turn off my computer when I'm done using it. I guess lots of people here are running torrents 24/7 or something.

Unless restarting counts as shutting it off in which case I probably average about a month between restarts. Only hardware problem I have had hard drive failure and it was a Raptor after three years of being on 24/7. Raptors are known to have a pretty high failure rate so nothing surprising there.

A cold boot is much harder on the drive than leaving it on, but I imagine the difference in shutdown + startup vs leaving it on for the extra 8 hrs is negligible. Also fan blades can't collect much dust if they're always spinning, :p but I imagine it does shorten their lives. I've never had a fan die, but I tend to buy high quality ones and usually undervolt them.
