I know I've run mine for at least a month straight before. I don't obsessively check my uptime though, so I can't give you a firm record. Took the laptop to school today, so right now it's only a few hours.

i've prbly left my comp on for about a week and a half at most

but i know this friend of mine who left his computer on for half a year after he finished building it; that happened like 4 years ago and everytime i go to his place i've never seen his computer shut off, so i dunno if he ever broke that 6 month record or if he ever broke his comp

My last computer had some thing, it would automatically shut off after 42 days and 15 hours. So that was my old record. I think i managed that far about 3-4 times back then.

(07:05:33) (@LorDo) uptime: 5d 3h 44m 36s :: record: 3w 4d 2h 1s

For this computer (or actually only since last time I reinstalled Windows) I'm not sure I've ever beaten that 42 day streak actually.

Wow, i left my computer on maybe 7 or 8 hours and i thought that was a lot.

Don't want to sound like a troll or something, but don't you think it's a little irresponsible to leave your computer on so much?, i'm not an eco nut or anything, but i don't know what's so hard about turning off your computer when you don't use it, just to save a little power.

Mind spends nights / other times I'm not using it in sleep mode, which takes almost no power at all.

I don't leave PCs on for very long, but I do have a low-power ARM based server box that was approaching 400 days before I moved.

so basically letting a computer ON for a long ass time doesnt increase hardware failure? i think even read somewhere that the booting process is actually more likely to cause failure...so if you let a computer ON for months, you won't boot often..so you might be better off....

Leaving the computer on has a negligible effect on hardware failure. Booting process used to be harmful because of the stress on the components..........in the early 90s. Now you can turn it on and off as much as you want with no ill effects.

My computer is left on 100% of the time. I have gone several months without restarting.

A cold start (pushing the power button to turn it on) is more harmful to your system than a warm boot (waking it up from sleep mode) and is more likely to cause hardware failure. Constantly surging it with electricity, as you do for a cold boot, is more damaging to the hardware components.

Generally i wouldnt worry too much about turning off your computer vs sleeping it a whole lot. Usually if somethings going to go wrong hardware-wise you'll run into it regardless of your power down routine. Personally i sleep my computer every night and only reboot it when updates require me to.

just set it so your harddrive spins down (assuming you have a separate storage hdd) when there's no activity for a while. i think it does affect your hdd life i've never had a harddrive fail on me ever and i always turn off my pc for the night (used to anyway). or maybe i'm just really lucky.

Before that, I restarted the computer for some minor configuration change.

There is a theory that electronic devices are designed to be switched on all the time as the surge of power when you turn something on does most of the damages to the computer.

I believe it's bad to leave it on for too long because you should be keeping up with Windows update (if you have Windoze!). I aim for rebooting every 1-2 weeks and end up doing it every 1-2 months or more lol

I usually send my latptop to idle mode when I don't need it.
This doesn't count as an interruption to the uptime though.

When I owned a desktop, it would be up for weeks, but probably never longer than a month. With my current laptop, probably a few days, and that's only for when I'm downloading a large file or burning in headphones.

Unless the computer is used as a server or has time-consuming operations or downloads running over night which can't be run during the day, I don't understand why it should run all the time. I hope the reason isn't lazyness. Even an idling PC will probably consume around 150-200W, and over night that's a lot.

I didn't bother powering it off most of the time, since it's loaded with stuff and loads up slowly. Then the power supply died, i'm more cautious with it now, it can't be good for the pc. The record is couple of days.

Uh.. Other then restarting I have had whatever my newest desktop is on for about 7 years. 5 Years for old comp and 2 for newest.

Unless restarting counts as shutting it off in which case I probably average about a month between restarts.

Only hardware problem I have had hard drive failure and it was a Raptor after three years of being on 24/7. Raptors are known to have a pretty high failure rate so nothing surprising there.

wait, if you have it on all night and day, should you put it to standby mode or something when you don't use it?

Modern hard drives are made to be able to run 24/7. A cold boot is much harder on the drive than leaving it on, but I imagine the difference in shutdown + startup vs leaving it on for the extra 8 hrs is negligible.

Also fan blades can't collect much dust if they're always spinning, :p but I imagine it does shorten their lives. I've never had a fan die, but I tend to buy high quality ones and usually undervolt them.
