Dude, you said yourself
I think overall, black people are better at acting than whites. They are more likely to be natural and not overact, a common behavior in poor acting. Now I know there aren't a whole lot of black superstars in hollywood, but the majority of actors aren't big names. The majority of actors do television or small commercials. These are the people that have 30 second clips in a subway commercial, or bank commercial, or really any commercial.
I guess we cannot possibly conceive that depth and realism that exists in a black actor enjoying a Subway meatball sandwhich, or the gripping enthusiasm shown by a black person who saved a $1 atm charge, as opposed to a white actor.
Give me a break.

You are running into hostility because you have not presented an idea. You have presented a generalization.
If you wish to present an idea, you need to tell us why you think black actors are better than white actors. Give some evidence, give some proof, give some reasons. Otherwise it just looks like you are painting two groups of people with a broad brush, and that obviously generates hostility.

"Less likely to overact" is a subjective observation based upon your own experiences and perceptions. If you expect to be able to make public generalizations about racial traits using that, then you are in for a lifetime of disappointment.

of course it's subjective observation .....etc.. I am not saying this is fact. I am saying this is what I believe from my own experiences....and it's not easy to describe what makes an actor "good" or "bad" besides subjective observation. Well let me break this down for you then. First of all, North America is a racially sensitive society. When you talk about racial traits, people have an immediate reaction. So, when you make your statement, you cannot simply lay it out there as if it were fact.
Secondly, society recognizes certain traits to lend itself towards specific races. Other traits are seen to be racially neutral. I would hypothesize that acting is seen as a racially neutral area. I don't know this, and if I were interested in the subject I might run a poll, but for the sake of this post, lets say I'm right.
If your intention is to challenge this notion that people have, contained as it is in a sensitive field, then you need to be much more careful in the way you present ideas. The very fact that it is not easy to talk about acting (and that you appear to have few credentials in terms of judging acting), makes your original assertion that much more unappealing.
A better way to go about this would be to gather some evidence, and some examples, developing a comparative study that shows a trend of better acting over a spectrum of acting and a period of time. By using these examples, and quantifying the performances with an accepted scale (or using others who are more recognized in the field) you could give your point some evidence. It might make for an interesting market research paper about who people prefer/find more believable in commercials (although there is obviously research done there already).
Should you do this all for a forum blog on teamliquid.net? No. But you should also know better than to come on the internet and lay down a blanket generalization about race with nothing than your own observations to back it up. That you are surprised by the reception to your approach is most shocking to me.

manifesto, you say I should have collected data about good and bad acting...but it's completely subjective...it's not like you can argue that bisu or flash are bad players....there are people that think samuel L jackson is terrific and others think hes absolute shit. A study like what you suggested is impossible...and I don't think I wrote the thread as "fact"...i will be the first one to admit that I dont know ANYTHING...I just have ideas that I think are right...but I constantly think about opposing views becasue I know I could be wrong...I don't know how much more emphasis I can put on it simply being an idea that I wanted people to consider to spice up the boredom of the same topics being discussed.
oh..and yes north america is so racially sensitive it's creating racism partly because I feel people are unwilling to freely talk about race. I am a minority myself and people tiptoe around my race all the time...it's pathetic because I don't care...even if they hurled the worst insults and stereotypes at me...who cares? doesn't change anything...they are still ignorant and life goes on...obladi oblada....

I'm pretty sure you're wrong dude. I recently started watching the television (TV) show The Wire cuz I heard it was real good and whatnot, and it kinda was, but not really. That guy talking about how Snot got shot in the opening scene of the series was horrible and almost made me give up on it straight away, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's a pretty good show overall, but I wish they'd cast a less obviously British dude in the lead, and it wouldn't hurt to tone down all those 'make lemonade' and 'runt without a teet' expressions they use in the cop scenes. Anyway, yeah, black actors are so much worse than white actors it's unbelievable.

Black actors are better than white actors because, despite knowing they're going to be end up dead in every role they sign up as they still act. Every movie has a black person die, if there is one if not then the movie doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned, and if it's not live action than a 'black character' dies in the black man's place. This is a fact of the entertainment industry, and because of this it makes black people the best actors because they still succeed despite this horrible prejudice.
|
Maybe it's because I'm high, but I really don't understand the discussion. Somehow a post about annoying things became a debate about black actors and there's actually people coming with logical arguments to prove that black actors are better/worst than white actors? wow lol

9. Not knowing a piece of meat is stuck between your molars until the next day when your gums are all swollen up and its hard to get out.
10. Cold, sweaty feet. Seriously, why would something sweat if it is already cold? grrr....
11. Meeting someone in a courteous environment (company dinner etc.) and having to shake their hand right after watching them cough/sneeze into it.
12. Feeling like you have to poop and then straining on the toilet for 2 minutes to let out 1 tiny raisin sized turd. Seriously as if pooping wasn't already a waste of my time. At least make it worth it...
13. Having a shower head that shoots out a few random thin (so they cool off super fast) streams of water in random directions so that no matter where you move, your foot or leg (or worse) is always getting hit by an annoying little freezing stream of water.
14. Catpoop in your kid's sandbox. grrr.... DIE KITTIES!
15. Not knowing whether what you are about to blow is a really hot fart or a bit of diarrhea, but having had a bad experience in the last month you decide to hold it in for your whole commute only to fart hot gas into the toilet.
16. (Sry for all the bathroom ones)..Being at an aquaintences house and only realizing after you've thrown a log that they are out of paper on the dispenser AND under the sink. grrrrr....what are people THINKING!

Stubbing my toe, walking into things etc.

haha I always check for toilet paper now.

I think the gas pump is supposed to represent the saying. “Adding fuel to the fire" as in, you're just turning this topic in to a flame thread, and providing the fuel in terms of the whole retarded black and white acting post that the OP must have written at some point.
I think it's basically along those lines.
I guess what mildly bothers me, is when people have an idea but try and present their point as if it had some sort of depth and is the underlying truth whilst providing absolutely no facts or evidence. Then hide behind the words "it's just an idea!" When they get met with arguements.
What also mildly annoys me is when people on this forum make really really bad sc jokes. Obviously it's an sc site, so you'll get sc related jokes, references etc. But for example in the balloon kid topic, someone posted a joke about him thinking he was a zealot and was going to zealot bomb tanks... seriously? Glad someone called him out on that one though
Oh and what really bugs me, is sometimes my socks will end up with sand in them, when I haven't been to or near a beach or anywhere with sand all day. WTF!?

22. People not keeping to the left on the sidewalk even though everyone else is keeping left, so you have to randomly dodge them.

2) Surprise cobweb to the face. Don't you hate when you are walking in an attic and you get the infamous surprise cobweb to the face? Makes you feel dirtier than 5 dollar hooker.
Random funny story: This saturday I was at a really foresty place for a cross country meet when one of my friends came running out of the trees screaming like a girl. He went into the bushes to piss but ran into a spiderweb (and the spider fell on him).

When people loudly laugh in public places for private reasons. (e.g. the guy next to me in the computer lab, watching some comedy online)
