so there is a little 13 year old kid taking a high level course (junior/senior) with me, at the university. i just asked him.
i have to admit i've never felt this stupid in my entire life. it makes me uncomfortable knowing i will see him almost everyday learning from the same professor.
i will kill myself if i fail this course and he passes it.
yes, the kid is asian.
any thoughts on how to handle this o,o?
edit: i put him on my SE team, seems like a cool kid and has a shitload of manners, let's see how he does ^^

swirly dude, give him the fuckin swirly!

Get over it, MOST OF THE WOrLD THINKS ALL ASIANS ARE SMART. It's a stereotype, care to learn it? Anyway, i think i saw a new story a year or so ago where an ASIAN!!! (OMG NO WAY) 13 year old kid was in college. Then i thought he should play SC.
|
Racist towards Asians? lol I'm planning to move to Japan after I graduate.
Ever heard of the (possibly true) stereotype that Asian people tend to be really smart at pretty much all academics? I think this is possibly true do to the emphasis their parents tend to put on academics from a young age.
|
challenge him to starcraft, if he declines then he is a wuss and you should give him a swirly, and if he accepts you win. Its a win-win situation.
Unless he is korean of course, if thats the case i would drop the class.
|
cheat off him if you feel your going to fail. Remember younger kids always think older people are cool.

Maybe you can talk to him about starcraft, asians i think are known to be very gifted with this game.

LOL. Imagine if you were 13 having to take college level courses. That would have been the stupidest shit ever.
Who gives a balls if the kid is smart. So he'll get a job 5 years sooner than the average person? Who the fuck cares. I would rather enjoy my childhood instead of worrying about passing a college class.
Child geniuses like never do anything that great anyways. Just because they're smart as a kid does not mean they're some sort of amazing person later in life.
Congrats to the kid for wanting to go to college but damn, I sure as hell wouldn't want to do that at 13.

I agree, when I was 13, I was more worried about why the fuck I was growing hair on my balls, and having the best super soaker water gun to win in my water gun fights against neighborhood kids. I was not at all interested in the development and evolution of American Literature, or the fundamental processes of the Economic system.

Its funny, every asian movie ive seen, tends to have some really stupid people in it, and then some normal guys, never an intellectual or whatever.

He did his HS in like a third of the time as you did. And he is smart for choosing to have the hardest part of his life (college and work) when he is best able to face it, aka. while he is still young. Dont come with shit like "they never do anything special anyway" if you are such an ignorant asshole.

O.o. I don't know how you took my post to be ignorant. Just because we view it differently doesnt mean I'm ignorant. I personally think that going to college at 13 is a terrible idea. You completely miss out on your childhood and all the badass things you get to do as a kid. I'm sure he has friends his own age but he doesn't really get to go to class with them at all.
All the articles I've read before about kids graduating college early really don't go on to do anything 'that special'. All I was saying was just because you are smart at a young age does not mean you are more intelligent at an older age.
|
I'd guess that there are many intelligent Asians, after all they make up a huge part of the world's total population. Many Africans don't have the chance to prove their inteliigence in the first place, so you can subtract another big chunk of humanity.
Also, in many areas in Asia, people study extremely hard if they get the chance to. It's expected in their society. If I am informed correctly, China's government takes quite forceful actions to produce such "gifted" children/people in all areas.
Chances are, that child isn't all that much more intelligent than you, but he most likely studies harder while you are having fun. Children can learn a lot, but they can't reflect it so well. They simply do what their parents tell them.
If he actually is as mature as you (or other people of your age, in case you aren't very mature either ), respect him. It's not your fault that your mind developed at a normal speed (lol). Though I would be surprised if he isn't suffering from some genetical defect or something like that if his mind is years ahead of his body. If he isn't, just think about him as someone who spent his short life studying all day long because that's most likely what he has been doing. I personally wouldn't want to miss my childhood, really.

I've had experience with this before, as the kid I was 10 when I took AP Calculus, and looking back, I did not enjoy it at all. I was fucking scared of all the older kids, who were like twice my age.
My advice to you would be to just ignore him and try your best. Don't be too competitive, and aim for a goal that you can reach. Don't let the kid make you feel stupid, even if he does better than you.
I also agree that going to college that early is a terrible idea. Being from a typical Asian family, i basically got pushed to skip grades and start college early. Once I got into college, I realized that I never got to enjoy my childhood, so I took a year off to get a job...and play Starcraft.

Get over it, don't give a fuck. Don't do anything? Also don't fail the class, but you shouldn't need a 13 year old to motivate you to pass your college courses, right?

Well and i was here thinking that getting a phd at 24 and then following it by getting a Nobel, was something rather special.
And to the OP, maybe you could learn something from the kid? Like, he doesnt seem to be such a bad project or study partner?

I know a kid who did this, straight out of junior high he enrolled in community college, stayed their for two years, got his high school equivilent and went off to college two years early and with a crap load of credits. If my kid has any kind of academic aptitude he/she is gonna do the same thing

I had sorta the opposite experience. I always felt really bored in school, and wanted to skip some grades. But my parents (who are white) were like "don't stress yourself too much, we want you to enjoy your childhood". So I was just really lazy as a kid.

The first two sentences are identical. In Japanese, the only person whose likes and dislikes you can really talk about with 好き without going through some grammatical contortions is yourself, so specifying that 好き refers to 私 isn't really necessary. It's more natural in most contexts to leave the pronoun off.
花火を愛です makes absolutely no sense, because you have the direct object particle を followed by the copula です. Even if you corrected it to 花火が愛です, you'd be equating fireworks and love in some mysterious way, which while far from impossible in context is sort of strange alone. The closest to correct would be 花火を愛する, but that's weird too since usually 愛 is a deep love for someone close to you or an ideal like peace. Your current hypercorrection to 私は花火を愛するです combines する and です, both sentence-final, in an ungrammatical way, so it's straight up wrong. Just go with 花火が好きです.
On-topic: Be nice to the kid and try to make him feel welcome. This would be futile advice if it were high school, but people in a college classroom should be mature enough to respect someone going through what that kid is. If you think it's awkward being "shown up" by a 13-year-old kid, imagine what it's like for him being in a class where he can relate to no one and is most likely painfully aware of how much he stands out, not to mention the probable parental pressure involved.

Handle what exactly? I do not see why it should be of any particular relevance to you if a prodigy is studying at the same university. Just accept that some people are particularly gifted and move on.
Besides, being a prodigy is a double-edged sword. If you are talented, people will have much bigger expectations from you then they would of others your age. Such pressure is something that is difficult for a child in his/her early teens to handle, so I would not be suprised if what Husky says is true. Still, there are examples where prodigies did end up being successful as adults as well, such as Mozart.

Indeed, that was a hilarious comment.
And Husky, I'm sure you look back at your supersoaker days with fondness, but I'm sure this kid will look back on learning _fill in advance subj here_ as greatly enriching to his personal development.
I love the attitude in the west, where academics are somehow assumed to be the drudgery of childhood, where for some reason, children don't *want to learn, and has to be forced by their parents. lol. Hilarious, it's only by learning about the world around you can you become a true person, with your own mind.
Learning science and philosophy, learning how the world works, was my greatest joy as a kid, and I don't think I was a nerd.

Congrats to the kid for wanting to go to college but damn, I sure as hell wouldn't want to do that at 13. I was taking college classes at the age of 15 and graduated high school as a sophomore in college. While doing this I was very active in football/track/basketball/tennis, receiving regional recognition freshmen to senior year in each. You don't "sacrifice" your childhood to take higher level courses. Dude, befriend him. Most child prodigies are pretty socially fucked up and don't really have any friends. By befriending him, you can:
