My friend is spending the next 12 months in Australia and I would like to give him a small present. Since he will be backpacking it should be somewhat useful. He already has a decent knife.

Any suggestions?

Well, it kind of depends what type of backpacking, but you could get him a stove, water pump, a nice jacket/camping wear, water bottle, something that you think he needs given that he's going camping. That's like the only information you gave us.

You could get him an Australian Flag. Or the Flag of your country.

Without more information about your friend and what kind of gear he already has its hard to suggest anything. Like someone said, water filter, stove ect could be usefull but if hes about to leave I would guess he already has everything essential like that. A book is a very good suggestion too, just make sure its not too heavy ;p

What type of packing? Is he a minimalist? Sending him a food package a few months down the road would be an amazing gesture. Will he be staying at hostels, outback, with people? Im guessing all of the above..

I know backpacking, give me more info and I can help.

EDITED.

A book sounds good. Or if you wanna be fancy, a nice set of small binoculars.

A book of australian bars.

He probably has a water bottle. Swiss army knives are overrated for backpacking, when was the last time you used a corkscrew, scaled a fish, etc. while backpacking?

The problem with being a backpacker is you don't want to carry extra weight that you'll never use, and you probably already have most of the essentials. So you have to upgrade to functionally superior equipment.

Might try lexan cutlery, a commercial hobo stove, a titanium cup or pot, super lightweight wicking garments, a goretex type shell (breathable one way to moisture). If you're willing to splurge, you could try a golite backpack or high quality boots/trail running shoes or a high quality goose-feathered down sleeping bag.

Well he needs to get a feeling what will it be like and its useful for riding and/or if your lazy use the quiver. Just remember to kick the kid out and your good to go.

like people have said above, depends on the type of backpacking. If he's going from hostel to hostel (do they even have those in aus?) then probably something like a really good guide book, maybe a phone card, etc. If he's camping, then some good camping gear like a compact 1 person tent (there are ones that roll up/fold to smaller that a sleeping bag), good sleeping bag, one of those first aid/survival kits etc

Book is the best option. Maybe even two books - one literature, something with an adventure or survival theme, and one on Australian life/culture/wildlife/tourism.

Give him something produces lots and lots of fire, because, since he's going to Australia, he's going to have to kill shit like this with it

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. Since he didn't have a flashlight, I got him one - with a built-in radio, alarm-siren and fluorescentlamp. No batteries needed, since there is a generator you can charge by using a crank (which also powers your cellphone). Oh, it can also flash light.

Needless to say he was very happy about it
