I often get angry when I lose a game. Broodwar, CS, War3, Dota, some loss are "ok" but sometimes, when I lose to carriers or because the ganks go wrong in a Dota game, I'm pissed.

A few minutes after the game has ended, I start "cooling down" and I realize that maybe, my opponent was just better, maybe I did mistakes myself, maybe.... and I stop whining.

Even If I try to think "it's ok, it's just a game", I can't help myself to feel bitter. Sometimes, it's a problem because I end up bitching at my friends or whining on Ventrilo which annoys everyone else.

I'm not someone angry "IRL", I like to laugh, I would say that I'm a "nice guy". That's why my friends don't really take it seriously when I tell them "you're such a fucking noob, quit dota forever plz now".

So why is it that I'm such a douche on the internet, and why is it that, even when I know it, I can't improve the way I behave towards my opponents or friends.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trashtalking so much (heh, just a lil' bit), I just feel sad that games have such a big impact on my spirit.

Did you ever feel like that ?

And how did you work on it ?

Should I just say "ok from now on, I'll never ever whine again". Or is it something so deep in my brain and blood that it's a done deal and I'll never change ?!

I have the same problem. I just hate losing too much and at the same time I think so highly of myself so I can't accept a lose against someone I think I should have won against. Against people I don't expect to win like high level players I don't get angry when I lose tho.

Yeah it's similar with me.
Only the problem is that when I start playing against random people on ICCup I automatically guess that they are worse than me (cause I play at low ranks), especially when I see them do something kind of strange in early game (Iike weird sim city or something), so I get all the more angry when they pwn me. I'm always relieved and it calms me down when I then see they are actually much higher ranked, and have like a massive amount of apm. Even though it's stupid.

That's why I like playing people from OP Irc, it takes much more for me to get angry when the guy I play isnt entirely random.

@OP sry I have no solution for you since I have the same problem ^^

P.S. losing ZvT against constant wraith harass is pretty much THE most infuriating thing ever...
there's nothing I hate losing to more than that...

Seems like you are really competetive, i used to get angry as fuck when i was getting killed in solider of fortune 2 hah, with the exception that i knew that i was better then most of the people i played against.Just be cool when you lose and remember that there are always people better than you, and if you think that the guy you lost to was worse, just analyze what you did wrong so it wont happen again ^_^Its a game after all, you play for fun.

This used to happen to me too, but then i started looking at things from different perspective. As soon as you get frustrated - shift that anger to solve the problem instead of venting about it. I usually ask myself "what could be done to counter this", "how and when should i scout/scan to spot carriers", "how can i communicate to my friends better so we gank more efficiently". This way my mind is busy solving problem instead of wasting energy for whining. 99.99% of time YOU could do something better, something smarter and that 0.01% of time you did all you could and if it still failed - it is simply out of your control so nothing to be pissed about.

was the title changed by a mod or it's really OP's title?

Happened to me in alot of times when I was an asshole with alot of problems in college. But now I'm old enough I just curse a little and that's it :D
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

I used to be similiar, but I kinda somehow got to terms with it. I used to get particularly angry if I lost to a hidden expansion. I always got so mad when I send a Overlord / Zergling to some corner of a map and I find a Protoss has a expansion with 10 cannons protecting it there. But then I just told myself: Next time I'll scout better. It was my fault I lost. These days I don't really get frustrated, and am capable of jumping directly to a next game after a horrible loss.

there's an option where you can make it seem to yourself, that you're worse of a player than you really are, despite what the people in your circle of friends think, and despite what the majority of the people who know you, think . . .

i'll offer a little personal experience,
i've had records on par, and exceeding top counterstrike players when i used to play
although i often died easily on lame maps like fy_iceworld that i would always play and practice on seriously. if coincidence happens, you meet people, in that your modesty garners their support, whether you're winning or making mistakes to the point that you lose---even including where chance happens and in a team game, your team plays like pubs, or like idiots you'd normally never want to play with again

i'm making less sense, but i want to ask,
what goals do you have, and what do you want to do in-game ?

i'm thinking that if you can overlook parts of the game, with those goals in sight
eventually you might feel more patient, or even happier of some of the things that happen

what you're 'sad' about now--the way you treat other people, might just be about something general like how you're used to being on the internet & in game

it doesn't feel well to perform with less than you'd like
but atleast you have the opportunity to perform fancy micro, like what you observe in pro-games,
and to be able to pull off higher-level strats as a result

i think this way personally, beacuse i don't believe any player is really just bad, until i get to know how they treat other players, get an idea of how they've learned to play the game, and get a look at how they talk about their own play.

there's times when i trash talk like mad, and lose so bad, that i feel like sh*t for the next hour or two because everyone in spectator slots, and everybody in channel begin to change their opinions about me, or my play. but you know you can do better, right ?

work on your own game and try to talk things through, considering all the things that could go wrong, or have gone wrong before (ie. having to struggle against carriers as terran)
----with yourself, and with your team, together

I have a similar problem and for me it has to do with ego. Usually when I lose it's a how could I have been so stupid type of game. Especially if you're playing against random people, people with ego tend to assume they're better which is why you don't feed bad playing against people who you know are better like 1v1 bw with testie

Be objective and stay constructive if it's a team game. It's easier said than done but the more you understand the game the easier it gets.

I used to get so pissed at losing 1v1's in BW and WAR3 and I simply stopped trying, and started map making only instead. Map Making distract me a lot, and doesn't get me so worked up like competitive 1v1's did.

I don't get as pissed in Dota/HoN. Partially because it's a team game, so when I'm losing I know it's not only my fault, and partially because I'm a much better DOTA player than BW player.

My last serious nerdrage actually happened yesterday, but it was a whole different story. I was playing Icewind Dale II, yes, a single player RPG, and after failing to kill Sherincal on Hard mode with 5 party members only like a dozen times, I finally do a perfect execution and get her down with no deaths - only to accidentaly stumble on my L (reload last saved game) when I was trying to press I (inventory) instead. I was stunned for 3 seconds in WTF mode and disbelief - then - I proceeded to punch my keyboard once, almost threw a glass of coke at the monitor, and raged REALLY badly on the inside...After a couple more minutes of wishing I was an demonic god of destruction and 2 cigarretes in a row, I started playing again. Took me another 3 tries to get her down again with no deaths.

I used to behave in similar way. My attitude changed since i began:
1) Massgaming (really no time to rage haha ;p you begin focusing on what's wrong in your play, not on raging)
2) This was probably waay more important - i took to my heart words that were posted on tl.net some time ago - something along the lines of "the better you are, the more aware you are of how bad you are" or smth like that. It really helped me, since i understood that it's all about inexperience and imperfection, which will last forever

i wish i understood better . . . playing secretly without your friends too

so . . . where's the reasoning for when you happen to suck in a sport that you play with your friends ? from personal experience . . . and i'm only saying this because it got out of hand for me . . . . i've had a friend or two, over starcraft LANs picking the teams every time because 'so and so sucks as much as so and so', and 'this is more fair' after supposedly picking the best team for himself. and what happens ? i go into a unique kind of rage, for all the people that are considered 'bad' on the other team, refuse to play with him for those choices, and get major attitude for it, as if my best friend from elementary school suddenly wants to kick my ass in a team-game of starcraft as if to prove himself better or something. not to mention the loud 'voice chat' he has in the other room about gangbanging me moments after we switch up the teams.
i just hope you're not like that to your friends sometimes, because things said like, ' you fucking suck, uninstall ', get really tiring. i'm just going to say, imagine yourself in their shoes
i know you're not severe, or a bad person-it's obvious, but do you really care solely for your own gaming experience that you disclude your buds ?

All people act differently over the internet, It's probably because you unconsciously know that you can have the option of never seeing the again, or KNOW you'll never see them again and trash talk or act rude all you want. What are THEY going to do? Trash talk back?
whereas your REAL LIFE friends will always be there to see you, thus you act in a more upstanding way, cause you'll have to see them tomorrow or the day after that.
Life is precious, yet insignificant

I used to be like you... when I was 8 y/o. Eventually I grew out of it and now when I see "you failed to achieve victory" or the end stats screen, I just look blankly at the screen, sigh to myself and say "LAWL" out loud.

no worries alright . . . ? it really is just a game though. get some air and work yourself up into a mood to play a game for *fun*. that's really all you're doing anyway, unless you're a semi-pro/amatuer at dota, cs, or starcraft ? . . .

Everytime I lose, I go, bah, I was because I was too stubborn to switch my tech to (so and so) after seeing his (units), or Eh, I lost because I was too lazy to protect that expansion, because in reality I was supposed to end the game with my timing push.

Things like that really calm me down, because I know it's something I can easily improve on if I just play a few games and encounter the same or relatively same things.

i have the same problems than you. Usually when i'm just straight raped i'm sad but well there is no point to get angry if the guy was just better. Usually the worst i do when i'm pissed ( vs unknown ) is just leaving with saying gg.
In UMS and 3v3 i trash talk a lot but it is just for fun and i'm not actually serious.
But what really makes me mad is when i have a close 2v2 or 1v1 game ( so vs people around my skill level ) and i lose because my ally makes a mistake or if i make a dumb move ( like failing my reaver micro during a PvT )
I can get really pissed. Sometimes i punch my desk and it takes me few seconds to relax.

My advices:

minors:
1- Don't get stuff like coffee or coke because caffeine makes you 3x angrier.
2- I like to drink beers while playing it has the opposite effect, i get relaxed and i don't really care anymore if i lose ( dunno if it works for other people though )
3- Play vs friends you will get less angry because the "anonymat" of ladders games is so frustrating.
4- Getting laid can help.

major:
You must understand that it is just just a game and like 99% of the broodwar players you are just a noob who sucks so it isn't really important if you lose some games. It is not like you won't find a team and a 10K salary with FA
:3
fuck all those elitists brb watching streams of elite players.

I used to have issues with this until I realized how ridiculously retarded you look when you try to bm someone after a game. Now on both ends, I just laugh at the ragers/bmers, whether they say "dude quit starcraft you suck" after they win or "cmon re me you effing nub" when they lose. When you don't respond or start that kind of stuff you totally disarm whoever is throwing the rocks.
