Sadly, this will probably become the new image of Sherlock Holmes in the mind of the ignorant people who have up until now only heard the name :S

This is just another Hollywood remake, it might even be watchable. It's stupid to get worked up over it. If you don't like the Hollywood style; don't watch it.

That said, I can't get over Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes. He's got a proper American accent, he's way too buff to be Sherlock, he looks like he just moved from the Iron Man set to the Sherlock set, and he never looks intelligent, much less like a genius. Jude Law would have made a better Sherlock, as would someone like Christian Bale, or perhaps even a cleaned up Hugh Laurie. Other than that, I think the movie looks like fun ![]()

Sleek, smart looking, not buff at all but still managing to pull through every time. There are prolly other good actors who could resemble Sherlock accurately too but seeing as it is a Guy Ritchie movie, this is most likely not the focus of the movie. :O

+ Show Spoiler + Holmes himself was a morphine and cocaine addict, a formidable martial artist and a self-proclaimed bohemian who'd gladly stay up all night to puzzle out a case. As described in Conan Doyle's 56 stories and four short novels -- written mostly between the 1880s and 1910s -- the sleuth also played by his own rules. "I generally have chemicals about, and occasionally do experiments," Holmes says to Watson while auditioning him as a potential roommate. "Would that annoy you?" But he's been domesticated by the years and come to be seen as what Roden calls "a Victorian fuddy-duddy." As Michael Chabon points out in his essay "Fan Fictions: On Sherlock Holmes," Conan Doyle's stories have been met with condescension for more than 100 years, the suspicion that their popularity came not from quality but from "the bourgeois thirst for a tidy adventure, or nostalgia for a vanished age (Victorian, or adolescent)."

There are no monologues, he just explains his reasoning to watson who is considerably dumber and gets praised for it. He is a cocaine, morphine addict, although at a time when those were legal. Those saying this is a crap hollywood version of holmes, have not read the actual stories or have seen too many old movies where theres almost no action and probably no hint at his vices.

Yes, it's going to be an all out ballfest of making Holmes as manly as possible and I wouldn't be surprised if he fights a bear at some point but I don't care. Some films, however differently they portray loved and well known characters can still be extremely enjoyable to watch if you take them at face value and suspend the temptation to indulge in indepth criticism. One of my favourite childhood films was "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes", it's very impressive visually and dealt with some taboo subjects for the time. I don't see it often on TV but it's worth watching if you get the chance. Plus it has midgets and the Loch Ness Monster which give it instant bonus points.

No and the fencing and boxing is basically explained as watson meets holmes. Or you could have read the wiki link you know.
