I feel like we need a new thread on the issue so as to not have a circular argument at the end of a 1000+ page thread. Discussing the imminent closure of the thread, possible alternatives, and so other admins could come forward and offer their input on the matter as well.
So to start, could I ask why we won't allow the thread to continue into Day 1 with a mod note announcing the stricter moderation and the links to the important posts in the OP more or less the same as any other LR thread? In the end it doesn't make much difference between 100 pages of spam and 1000.
Also, can we get a slightly more detailed account of how the mods reached the decision to close the thread and the interim between that decision and Zealously's announcement?

Thread sucks, should have been closed after the first day of 125+ pages of spam. Either that or all the offenders warned/banned to discourage it. My only criticism is the staff waited too long to make a decision.

The thread should have been shut down right away if it was gonna be shut down at all. And if the off-topicness was the issue, that could easily have been taken care of with some warnings.

This thread has nothing wrong or different compared to other LR threads (besides the size and passhun) so why discard it for a new one? Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not like it's violating the rules right? Edit: oh well I realize we got some leeway regarding the posting rules but still I think it's pretty epic to keep it as the official LR thread If this were literally any other LR thread on TL, people would have been warned and banned for quintuple posting and making zero-content posts around page 50. I know this thread is all in good fun, but this really isn't a standard LR thread by any stretch of the imagination. On October 29 2014 05:24 Aeromi wrote: You can't deny that there is a lot of shitpost/poor posts in this thread. You mean like every LR thread? Blizzcon isn't a normal tournament. And it will normalize when the event actually starts, so I don't see any problem The fact that Blizzcon isn't a normal tournament is why this thread was allowed to run essentially without rules in the first place. Keeping it as is, to say the least, is impractical. I understand, but I still say this should remain as the one true thread. It was started early with the intention of pre-hyping Blizzcon to the max, and it's not our fault rules weren't enforced here while we did just that Rules weren't enforced because we know the LR regulars enjoy tangentially related off-topic discussions and everything that goes with it. I think you're being unfair in saying that "it's not our fault rules weren't enforced". No, obviously we're responsible for enforcing rules and could have dropped the hammer on people making eleven posts in a row of filling entire pages with posts no longer than 8 characters. We figured there was no harm in letting things run like this for a while before the biggest tournament of the year, but the majority of staff members agree that this thread isn't practical for the actual purpose of being an LR thread dedicated to the tournament itself.

I stopped really caring about the moderation in that thread when deliberately no action was taken on a quintuple-post. While it is reasonable to have a hype/discussion thread beforehand, I do think that the normal rules should have been enforced. I did contribute a lot to this problem, by posting a ton, making the thread early, and giving die4ever the means to run his passion board (which was way over the top, in retrospect). However, even though it's a special thread, there should never be 6-10 people constantly in a tournament thread posting simply for the sake of posting.
...yeah, I'm a hypocrite for saying that. Oh well

What about the other idea that opterown initially had? Remaking that into a (again, more strictly moderated) general hype thread?
Besides, it hasn't devolved into complete chaos. The memories of the Ukraine thread still makes me laugh my ass off.

My only criticism is the staff waited too long to make a decision. I want to strongly second this. That the thread was made early was fine, that it turned into 1000 pages of people just chatting about whatever is not. I feel that this is supposed to be a forum, not a chat room to talk about how passionate we are. It also indirectly discourages new people from participating, because they see 1000 pages of talking and don't want to read through them.

I agree with this too. I don't see why a thread of 1000 pages would discourage casuals and new people to participate, not that they're going to read the 20k posts in them after all

And yes there was a ton of shitposting in this thread, but there was also actual hype content created.

agreed, whilst i did spam quite a bit, there was a lot of truly quality posts and pictures, its unfair to do away with it all i think...

Why it isnt practical?
Just mod note when tournament finaly starts and everything is fine.
|
Just have to say that I think the mod note would be enough. Saying that it's impractical or that I would discourage new posters to post because of all the spam is really not relevant. The new posters won't bother to read it anyway. As a matter of fact, this very thread inspired me to make a TL account in the first place, It didn't dicourage me in any way. (Although I did spam in it, was warned, stopped - no big deal)

I think that one knows it went too far when there is a spam leaderboard to encourage more spam, and this regardless of the rules enforcement.

It really isn't fair to just close the thread. Some people put a lot of effort into it (templar, die, sgtk, heart, yosu...) I personally think that just making rules apply with a note is enough. There is no point in making another thread when all of the hype/predictions/power ranks/pics... Are in this one

Related to this situation... what's the policy on re-posting?
For example a power rank or prediction post that's in the current "LR" thread. Would I be allowed to re-post in the new thread? I really don't just want something that I spent hours working on being just linked to...

So, do we get answers from admins/mods to these questions?
