Been wanting to make this topic for a while.
FWIW, I'm Chinese and my "hair style" is best categorized as "messy spikes". Basically I get a decent glob of hair wax, fix my hair into the way I like it, where it's just clumps of spikes going up or diagonal, w/e I feel looks fine at the moment. My problem is that the hair wax, considered one of the most efficient Japanese products (Gatsby Hair Wax, I have tried ultra hard but now I use matting type. I prefer matting type but neither actually do the job anyway) for hair holding isn't strong enough to keep it in that form throughout the day. I give it like a good hour or two of attending class or w/e before it begins collapsing. What results is a day of me constantly having to fix my hair so much that it's like a habit for me now, but eventually the hair wax just gives way then it's unmalleable forever.
I don't like gel because I don't like the "shine" and the non-clumpiness that gel gives me. I could be wrong though since the only gels I've tried were the max-hold LA Looks and LaBella gels. I also don't like how they make things look shaped that way, the way my wax does my hair is so that things look more natural (well having DBZ hair is obviously unnatural but still).
Basically my hair tends to revert to its original shape (going down on all sides like a freaking bowl cut).
I am looking for tips as to how to solve my problem either with a specific brand/type of hair wax/gel/whatever, or if there's any way I can train my hair not to fall into that flat shape.
Pics:
Left is original (slightly exaggerated, I took that a while ago for some reason), right is after a long, exhausting day in the sun at college orientation (that is exaggerated too, that's more like my normal hair w/o any gel).

When applying hair gel, first of all use an ultra-strong one, apply it to somewhat wet hair, and once applied take a dry towel and rub your hair all dry. After that you can shape the hair the way you want and apply a little bit (so as to not have the "shiny", or wet look) more gel maybe - for fixation where it's necessary.
Should stay for a long time, at least for me it holds all day (if I apply it the way you do it tends to eventually tire out and fall down due it's own wight and concentrated spread).

Cut it off all like this...
THIS
I'm cutting my hair like that, ever since I tried for the first time, it's soo much fucking amazing, to no do anything with your hair, do not have to spend time fixing it when it fucks up, and do not having to look at yourself and how fucked up your hair is when you wake up in the morning, and believe me, it is like that. Well, Since you and I, do not have the same style of hair, I would say, that you should try other products and stuff. When I have my hair fairly long, I usually fix my hair and do a MoHawk, I do it with some products, that my mom told me to use (she used to be a hair stylist). If you have any friends, that do the same thing as you do, try to search opinions with them and see what kind of products they use.
Btw, sorry for the picture, I couldn't find a better one.

I use a strong wax and it works, though i dont use it spikey.
There are other products that you put on your hair, dry it with heat and it stays really really solid in its place, i dont remember the name. When i come back from a movie i will look for it.

I too am Chinese, and I faced the exact same problem. Worse, in fact, since, long or short, my hair refused to stay in place. I've stopped caring about it. It seemed to best solution...
You might try a different hairdo though. It might suit your hair better. Xellos's hairdo, for instance, is quite neat.

just use really strong glue
People also randomly come and sniff your hair as a bonus.

They have the new GATSBY CLAY! <_< i dunno. use gel or wax. it wears off, that's life.

Thanks Mynock, never heard of that before but I'll try it soon.
(if I apply it the way you do it tends to eventually tire out and fall down due it's own wight and concentrated spread).
This is exactly the problem, I can already tell once I finish doing my hair in the morning that it's really fragile =/.
Funkie, I'm not gonna shave my head, thanks anyway . I agree though, when I wear my hat out because I'm too lazy to mess w/ my hair it's really convenient
Thanks IntoTheWow, looking forward to it
Story: I've looked for different hair styles and stuff, particularly Japanese styles such as these: http://www.beauty-box.jp/style/mens/index.html I also can't imagine in my head what I'd look like with some of those styles, and I don't want to end up cutting my hair and devoting a bunch of time and effort on it just to find out that it looks horrible for me (imo different shaped heads are better suited for different styles and stuff like that)
But I didn't really find one that I could do immediately (usually because my hair is too short, my top is maybe about 3 inches right now), and I didn't like many of them either.
Radu, could you recommend a specific brand or something?
Zalfor, thanks, I try my local asian markets and see if they have any of that. Googling up "gatsby clay" images shows me some hope

Since the subject is kinda here, does anyone know of something that will keep your hair looking more stringy? That's the only way I can really describe it. When my hair gets long it looks like shit when it's dry, but totally badass when it's wet. So, my dilemma is that I have to constantly keep my hair wet to make it look decent, then everyone is asking why I wet my hair, or just let it look like shit. I kinda want something like gel that will keep it looking wet, but I don't want it to be so hard. I want my hair to flow freely. It's hard to describe...
Something to make it look KINDA like this, but not nearly as gay, and more seperated than that.

Shave your head, save yourself loads of trouble

emm that happens to me too and i dont like gel anymore(because it's oily and shiny"...
I use gatsby too! but when it falls I can kind of reshape so it stick up again( but cant restyle wat i really want).. mostly, the longer the hair, the harder for it to stay spiky top.
try to use this technique.. but dont follow the example pictures.. http://www.gatsby.jp/en/technique/02.html
time and sweats seem to be the cause...

Try rubbing some (good quality) gel all over your hands (but not tons, cause then your hair will get too stiff) and working it through your hair while it is still wet. Then shake your head and let your hair fall naturally or style it with your fingers however you want. Usually a good gel will keep the wet look if you apply it to wet hair. If that doesn't work, try mousse.
It's not really "stringy" that you want...more like..."choppy", or some other euphemistic term like that. Stringy makes me think of Emogirl videos. "my hair is an expression of my pain..."

To thread starter: gel is the best way to hold spikes. You just need a higher quality gel. With hair products you really do get what you pay for.

That and guys who are interested in getting girls, and not looking like losers. Sloppy guys are not attractive at all to women.

I've never seen hair so romanticly ready in my life.
You may want to find an easier way to keep your hair during class, and just do it when you go out. Although that sounds pretty gay now that I've said it aloud.
Might want to try different products, and maybe some hair spray. I have thick greasy black nerd hair (but black instead of red,) and the only thing I find that keeps it up is: Hair gel in after shower, hair spray (I'm not sure what brand it was,) and then letting it dry before I let anything touch it.

Good discussion so far, a big thanks to those who've helped me, keep it coming. I think I'll go out to the market tomorrow and check for gatsby clay and try that out, as well as go to a local hair stylist and look for some high quality gel.

i am chinese and have the same hair as you, my advice is just to grow it long and forget about the rest. If you insist on leaving it short, then i recommend hair wax, i picked up some shiseido hair wax in japan once and its the best hair styling product ive used by miles. Mainly because it is designed for hard asian hair unlike LA looks or whatever else those soft haired white people use.

Japanese gel is indeed very good. It's like viagra for hair. But sometimes, nothing can help your hair short of a miracle. Mine resisted 4 hours of rebonding to curl outwards like it normally does when long. Therefore... gg.

Any recommendations on a type of gel to use? Just think of the way your hair is when it's wet, and I want THAT look, basically. Probably not as long as your hair though.
