Samsung’s Shine: “Confidence regained through the Starleague”

Some players, when the Starleagues near, become different. Even while bearing bad records in the proleague, for some strange reason they come alive with the Starleague and make it past the qualifiers, and even take that momentum to good results in the proleague. The king of that is Samsung Khan’s Shine, whose teammates are even mystified by it.

Q: You made it into the Starleague [ro16]. How do you feel
Shine: It feels like my first win in forever, and the first Starleague in forever, so I’m happy. Both my hands and heart are still shaking.

Q: You always get stronger as the Starleagues approach. Why is that
Shine: I feel like I only play well in Starleague games, too. I get a lot of times where luck just falls my way. I feel kinda bad because only in Starleagues and not proleague does my spirit come alive. There must be several reasons why, but I haven’t figured out the problem yet. Maybe because in individual leagues, your fate gets decided so quickly, while proleagues last forever, but whatever the case I’ve become resigned to the fact that I’m just not very good at [proleague] (laughs).

Q: It seems like you want to improve your proleague skills
Shine: A while ago, coach Kim Yang-joong told me, “it seems like you play proleague pretty relaxed, but you get really nervous about individual leagues.” I guess I’ll have to worry a lot more about proleague.

Q: In the first match against Last you chose an aggressive build
Shine: I didn’t necessarily pick it for him. In the case an aggressive build is blocked, there’s still the losers’ and final matches, so I played aggressive with a mind to warm up my hands. That’s how it happened (laughs).

Q: You played aggressive against Neo_G.Soulkey, too
Shine: I have confidence in ZvZ no matter who I play. However, overall I had a lot of disappointments. I could’ve won easily but made a bunch of mistakes and didn’t show good play. I got mad at myself a lot in the games.

Q: Instead of mutalisk +1 defense, you chose +1 attack.
Shine: So my opponent made a bunch of spores. I saw that, figured he wouldn’t have a lot of drones, and got the attack upgrade. In that situation, even though he can’t come attack, the emphasis becomes scourge play. Attack upgrades are really useful for taking out scourge, that’s why I chose to get it.

Q: Are you confident about this Starleague
Shine: It’s sucks that I always lose in the ro16. I’ve let slip matches where I was winning, and even though I’ve had second chances, I’ve never been to the ro8. I don’t think I have a choice [this time] except to give it my all.

Q: Any last things you want to say
Shine: For a while, my family, managers, and coaches have all worried about me. Because it looked like I’d lost some skill, even I worried, too, but with these matches I’ve recovered my confidence. In the next proleague, I’m confident I can take the momentum from this Starleague and do well. There will be no reason to worry from now on.

Woongjin’s Neo.G_Soulkey: “A golden opportunity to be crowned top zerg”

lol wtf is up with that pose, Soulkey

The one with the reputation as the top zerg – Team 8’s Jaedong – was recently disqualified from the Starleague; the eyes of zerg fans everywhere honed in on Neo.G_Soulkey. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Jaedong as the wins leader in proleague, and in particular showed an exceptional ZvT skill, cementing him as the strongest candidate to win it all. Moreover, by resolving to work his hardest to earn the “top zerg” title, Neo.G_Soulkey signaled his intentions to win.

Q: You advanced in the Starleague by beating just terrans
Neo.G_Soulkey: It was the kind of performance I always dream about, and I’m really happy I advanced, because I truly wanted it. I came having only practiced ZvTs, so I think that worked out well.

Q: Did you expect to move up in the Starleague
Neo.G_Soulkey: Because I was in a group with two zergs and two terrans, I wasn’t expecting any surprises. I thought even if I lost in the winner’s match, I’d win in the final match, so I was confident.

Q: The individual leagues haven’t been friendly to you
Neo.G_Soulkey: It’s true I’d felt a lot of regret. But I think the time wasn’t right. Even though I’ve made it into the Starleague late, I’m going to do my absolute best to show everything I’ve got.

Q: Your recent results have been really good
Neo.G_Soulkey: This season my confidence has been overflowing. I feel like I’m poised to do something. I really want to hurry up and play the Starleague. To be honest, I was disappointed because I’d built up momentum in the proleague and then there were no matches, so it’s fortunate the Starleague started up.

Q: I thought you’d be worried at all the zergs advancing
Neo.G_Soulkey: Right now I’m not worried at all. Today, I failed to be perfect and lost once, but in the Starleague I’m not going to be intimidated even if I meet a zerg. Even if I meet ZerO, I’m confident. I’ve lost in the MSL before, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to lose this time. I definitely think I have what it takes to win.

Q: You said you were just worried about Flash
Neo.G_Soulkey: Because I’ve lost to Flash a bunch, I think of him as a revenge target first and foremost. But I’m not at all afraid of anyone else.

Q: Your goal this Starleague
Neo.G_Soulkey: It’s definitely to win it all (laughs). I used to say my goal was to last longer than ZerO, but I wonder if that wasn’t too modest. Now my goal for real is to win.

Q: It’s your chance to claim the title of “top zerg”
Neo.G_Soulkey: I think because Jaedong lost, this is a good opportunity for me. I think it’s crucial to do well in the individual leagues to clinch the title of top zerg.

Q: I know that you’ve been practicing Starcraft 2
Neo.G_Soulkey: My feel [for Starcraft 1] came back quickly. To be honest, after practicing Starcraft 2 and going back to Starcraft 1, my hands didn’t move well for some reason. For about a day, I felt really uncomfortable and frustrated. I consider it a relief that my feel came back in like two days. I’m practicing Starcraft 2 really hard, but I wish zerg would get a patch soon. The balance [of Starcraft 2] really isn’t that great (laughs).

Q: Anything else you’d like to say
Neo.G_Soulkey: I’d like to thank hOn_sin, Light, and Rudy, who helped me practice even though it was the offseason. It must have been hard, so I’m truly thankful. After I get back to the dorms, I want to buy them something yummy. I’m going to do what it takes to do well in this Starleague.

SK got that champion pose down to the dot!

I am hoping for SK vs Flash semifinal and Stork vs Fantasy
With SK vs Stork in the grand stage.
And then my dream of witnessing a PvZ final would come true! And hopefully Stork clings on to that trophy at the very end.

with all the talk of sc2 practice, I'm really curious how well they will do (omg I can't believe I just said that )
glad Sk advanced. His play has looked really nice compared to a lot of zergs lately, and God knows we need some more fucking amazing games of BW!!!

? Shine was a semifinalist in EVER 2009. Something lost in translation, or just poor memory on his part?

Hmm idk maybe someone with better Korean could verify. The original korean says "8강에 간 적은 없다," which by itself means "I've never been to the ro8." There might be contextual clues that I'm missing.

Naw, I'll just blame Shine on this one haha. I mean, you can tell he's modest, but even to the point of forced amnesia? Talk about humble

Yes. I looked at the interview and will also confirm that Shine have amnesia.

Except he made it all the way to the semi-finals(Ro8 win over Stork, Ro4 loss to Movie).

Maybe even he understands that his cheesiness wins in the OSL doesn't really count in his mind?

Oh so even soulkey has problem transitioning between the two games . So coach juu what about your players playing better after playing sc2 ... because I don't see any team 8 players in the osl right now .
