Note: this topic is about the Nijmegen Student StarCraft League. For next year's Dutch StarCraft League see this topic.

Hi TL,

This April the first Nijmegen Student StarCraft League has started! It's an SC2 tournament open to all students in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, and we got a player pool of 72 people. We've arranged for a lecture hall in which to stream the semi-finals and finals live to an audience. We're hoping to get the e-sports vibe going in Nijmegen!

There will be one or two group stages and a single elimination bracket. It'll mostly be an online thing, but we will try to cast as many of the games from the group stages and post them on our website. In fact: all of the games from the tournament have been casted, that's over 60 hours of content! And obviously we're going to stream the offline finals as well. So we're not only focusing on entertaining the players, but also on getting an audience.

We've also got several sponsors: Cooler Master, Computerland, MSI, Gator, Flyert.nl & SNUF (great acronym, I know ). They sponsor goodies for the winners and hardware for use during the finals - thanks!

In this topic we'll announce updates as they come along, and we hope that you'll follow the tournament and tune in to the livestream of the finals. Or better yet: come to the actual event! It's on the evening of Thursday June 7th in Nijmegen.

The NSSL is really warming up! We're now actively looking for participants and have already found several sponsors. Cooler Master & Computerland both sponsor two computers for use during the finals (for playing and casting), and Flyert.nl has sponsored our posters, which we are spreading all over the campus. Even the University helps out in covering our expenses.

Unfortunately I have not received any response from Blizzard. I have filled out the tournament permission form on January 18th, and have since sent two reminders and have tried to call them (which is impossible). We're now working under the assumption that we will have their permission.

Also: several people have come forward and have offered to help cast some of the games. Most of these aren't even from the Radboud University or HAN University of Applied Sciences! This really motivates me to go national next year! If there's anyone here who'd like to help organize the Netherlands Student StarCraft League in 2013 let me know - we need people from all Universities and 'Hogescholen'.

Pretty cool. Maybe next time you can try including universities from other cities, especially tech ones (tu/e, tu/d), because those will most likely have a lot more gamers ^^ gl

Signed up a week ago but the website refused me, I think. Do you know if there are any masters+ level players in Nijmegen, don't really feel like practicing to improve. ;_;
Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o' goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don't bite; them's my views--amen, so be it.

There have been some problems with the form - I'm sorry about that! It should work now, so please try again.

I don't know about what level the players will be, it'll be a big surprise

Haha - next year I'll have the same problem. If you're thinking about doing a PhD you might be able to join the PhD-league

Some thoughts about the map-pool: I'm strongly in favour of using the Blizzard ladder-maps simply because everyone has those. No haggling with people having to download the right versions of some custom map. Also: Blizzard maps have been more streamlined for use in tournaments anyway (no more gold / close spawn / etc.). Seems like a good idea, no?

The plan is to let every first game of a series take place on a fixed map, and then let the loser pick the next map. We're thinking about taking Tal'darim Altar LE as the first map - it's generally well known by now and does not have any major race-dependent quirks. Do you think so too?

The loser may then pick any of the other ladder maps for the next game, provided it hasn't already been played on.

Is it a two-year master? You could still take part in next year's national edition

Sorry about the confusion: there is no PhD-league as of yet. When we go national next year I do plan to create a separate league for PhD's though. Please let me know if you'd be interested in brainstorming about that.

Ah, I get it now. I currently don't have a lot of time to spare (or: want to make avaible) to actually help/support the organisation of this, but I am interested anyway. I was interested, because I was looking around a bit to maybe enter some tournaments for fun purposes, and as I am a PhD this seemed very fun .

This sounds really nice, very nice initiative. If it was any closer to Haarlem where I live I might even have considered opting myself as a caster since I wouldn't be allowed to play anyway (it's for Nijmegen people only eh ) but this is simply too far away. I would've gladly done it for the sake of the e-sports community in The Netherlands but too bad, hopefully next year you guys can provide a national tournament and in such a case you can bet on a tournament of international level quality for sure. Good luck with your first try this year though, make it count!

edit: blizzard maps still have gold mining bases as of now.. don't know if it's smart to only use Blizz maps.

You're quite right: Shattered Temple, Antiga Shipyard and Metalopolis still have gold bases in the Blizzard pool.

Hmm, do you think that would be grounds to expell them from the mappool? And should we replace them with other maps, or are five maps enough? I think it might be, and I still think that playing on non-blizzard maps creates lots of extra hassle...

Your thoughts?
