I heard once George Bush say that we were all Americans, in regards to the tragedy that occurred that day. I can understand Kennedy's "Ich bin ein Berliner", but this message left me speechless.
I'm French and Chilean. I've never been an American citizen.
3000 people died. It IS a tragedy. But it was very far away from home, and I was very young. I woud even add that as a member of the growing internet generation, I've been exposed to such horrors that my sensibility has greatly decreased. So, no, I do not care that much to be honest, and I believe I'm not alone. 9/11 is comparable, to me, to Katrina, Fukushima, Pakistan's earthquake... a tragedy but nothing of international and absolute concern. It makes me sad but it won't prevent me from having a nice, sunny day. And if you ever want to call me an insensitive idiot, I'll answer: where were you when thousands of Tutsis were murdered in horrible ways? Probably enjoying a nice ice cream. But if f you really care every second of your life, feel free to throw the first stone!
So why is 9/11 so important to the rest of the world? Because it was a harsh blow not only to the USA, but to the West in general. What is the West? It's a bubble of wealth. We, as the western - european - culture, profit from the rest of the world. Our favored position depends directly of the suffering and hard labour of dominated countries in Asia, South America and Africa. Currents events in the Middle-East are proof: interventionnism is only a way to secure our interests while using the shiny shield of morality and justice.
9/11 is a symbol, it's a shiver down the American spine. It reminds everyone that we are not walking on ground, but on people. We are those who fuel the hate. Everyone is responsible for what they support, and for what they decide to let happen.
And even though it has been declared as a day of mourning by the international authorities (well excuse me French government but I don't think you care that much neither anyway), I feel like it is necessary to remind everyone that the famous press agency Reuters refuses to use the word terrorist...
... because some people's terrorists are other people's resistance fighters.

If you're talking about South America and Africa I'm not so sure, but for many Asian nations, all I can say is if there were no America and Europe to buy their goods, they wouldn't have developed so fast economically.
|
If you don't care, keep it to yourself.
No one wants to hear why someone doesn't care because it shouldn't be something you care enough to talk about.
|
Oh man the bans are going to be rolling out today. Bad day for the pathetic trolls to come out.
|
Yeah but they also wouldn't have to develop so fast because there's no Western interests threatening to sap your resources. China wants to develop into a force rivaling Western nations so it won't be subservient to stronger forces. Without that incentive, who knows what it will be like now.

He felt the need to tell us he doesn't care? Carecup sure is full in here ...

Exactly, i dont start threads about things i dont care about, because well, i dont care about them.
Seems like you just want to get attention.
|
Yes! Just what we need! More 9/11 threads.
Also OP since you're european why didnt you make a snarky remark about why Americans care so much about November 9th?
|
If you want my honest opinion, I'm guessing most people in the world don't care about 9/11, at least not really. I live in America and was an adult when it occurred, and it still barely affected me at all. However, most people who don't care have the courtesy to keep that opinion away from public forums, where there are people who were probably affected deeply by the events of that day. And certainly this is the least appropriate day of the year to be having this conversation.

This is better off as a blogpost, honestly.

It's a necessary controversy, IMO. There are nearly 7 billion people in the world and it's important to look at the big picture.
My point though is not that I don't care, it's that as a person who doesn't care that much for the tragedy, the interest resides in the symbolic side of the event. I don't really see how to change to title to fit better though.
If you have any suggestions and/or feel the title is too provocative, feel free to express yourself, I don't mind changing it.
Edit: wait, I can't change the title, can I? And if this is better fitted to be in blogs, I don't mind the mods moving it neither. I just wanted to discuss 9/11 as a symbol and not as a tragedy. "RIP" doesn't make things go very far IMO.
|
it doesn't matter for me too, but i don't just go around trying to create more internet wars
|
So if something gets attacked in France, we'll feel sorry for you. But we won't make threads that say we don't care.
Leave 9/11 to the mourners here in America and around the world and keep your negative opinion to yourself.
The nerve of some people...

10 threads about why people *do* care about 9/11 inc...
Everyone's got an opinion on everything. They're not all going to be the same.
Can we at least post them all in the same, already-created thread?
|
I may agree with you that 9/11 is just one of many tragedies that happen every year all around the world, however there are two things that make it more important: the fact that it was an attack directed to what was always considered the core of Western economy (just think at what WTC stands for) and the consequences of the attack: basically all the "war-to-terrorism" thing that originated from that. Also I have not understand the last phrase, you don't consider someone who took ~3000 innocent lifes a "terrorist"? You consider them "resistance fighters"?

All the mods must be sleeping or something.

Can this thread go into the closed forum?

How can he compare the biggest terrorist attack this century to a natural disaster? lol wtf?
Resistance fighters? every muslim i have met hates the extremist taliban / other divisions because it brings them hatred, prejudice and has an effect on their lives.
You sir are an IDIOT. and a completely insensitive one at that, why the fuck post something like this on 9/11, any other day fine, voice your opinion, you'll be banned but meh who cares.
I am english and 9/11 does not really "affect" me in anyway, however my hearts go out to the people who were effected and i do not pull shit like this, your ridiculous. The simple fact you would post / think / say something like this on 9/11 itself to people who have potentially been directly effected makes you a terrible person IMO.

Pretty much this. Seem like this is a thinly veiled troll.
IF you dont care, keep it to yourself, and go enjoy your day as you planned.
