GOMTV just published a interview with the map creator LSPrime that created the maps TalDarim Altar and Terminus RE that will be used in GSL March. It's always nice to hear what a mapmaker thinks about when trying to make a great and balanced map.
Q. Can you give us a short introduction about yourself?
Hello, my name is Joo Jong Hyun and I use the ID LSPrime.
Q. When did you start creating maps and why did you start making them?
I tried making maps during closed beta but the interface was very different from the previous BW editor so I had to stop at just trying it out.
I tried making maps again during open beta. There was a contest during that time and I continued making maps since then.
Q. Where did you get ideas about designs when creating new maps?
I just try to create the map I have been thinking about in my head or modify the maps to fit SC2 conditions by looking at the maps I have created in BW or parts of the structures of maps created by others.
Q. We heard that Terminus RE is a remake of Blizzard’s map. What lead you to remake the map?
Gisado who runs Gisado’s Star Challenge has asked me to revise the original Terminus map. Before I revised it, Gisado used a map called Terminus G with extra natural expos for his broadcast. It seemed like the revised map made matches more fun and not much changes needed to be made so I decided to remake the map. It’s still the same now but back then the editor had bugs so I went through a lot of trouble.
Q. What led you to make Tal’Darim Altar? What kind of map is Tal’Darim Altar?
The reason I made the map is because all the existing maps have the hill structure for base-natural expo formation.
It seems like the reason for that is because the sight on the hill has lots of advantages compared to SC1.
Tal’Darim was made to have a flatland unlike the pre-existing maps.
It’s hard to defend the entrance for the base but it was adjusted so defending natural expo is easier. To prevent the possibility of being contained due to the narrow entrance, a route was created that connects the 2nd expo and natural expo line.
I like the concept but when I was making the map I was more into SC1 so I think the map is a little too big to my disappointment.
Despite the size of the map I am satisfied that a lot of great matches came out of the map.

Q. What do you think about the maps made by Blizzard? What is your favorite Blizzard map?
I like Metalopolis the best. There is the problem with the time it takes to reach the other side of the map diagonally but I think it is well made.
That one answer is very controversial.. His only problem with Metropolis is the best spawning point ensuring macro games. I wonder what TL users will think about it.
|
I think he's approaching like its supposed to be a small map with less macro games due to 2 out of 3 spawning positions being very close, whereas most other people approach it the other way.
|
I think you'll find anyone who thinks about the game for more than 30 seconds realises that making maps 50 miles long to ensure 3+ base games isn't actually good design at all and is just response to mass whining.

I think you're interpreting his answer wrong. I believe he's actually referring to close positions as those are "diagonal" (9 vs 12, 3 vs 6). Cross positions are technically horizontal or vertical, but not diagonal
Yeah, close air positions are technically diagonal too, but I'm inclined to argue his answer probably wasn't perfectly translated, and I'm almost 100% sure he means close by ground.

Quick contact Xeph and tell him we need the new maps used in Gisado's star challenge.
Coral Coast and Area 428.I've harrased him enough but, nothing yet.

Great to hear that he knows that Tal'Darim Altar is too big

I have had this countless times before. Random guy makes random stuff wich is 'mediocre' to 'ok', gets a shitload of exposure and people will think hes any good.

well the exposure is mostly because his maps are acutally balanced, compared to well Blizzard maps.Later on,down the line I doubrt people will look at him they way they see him now, unless he makes some crazy good/balanced map.

The balance is part of it surely, but it sounds like he knows there are problems with his maps. (Notice how he keeps bringing up Tal'Darim Altar, without being asked). The exposure is because he won a contest, and the bit of exposure blossomed into more exposure when GSTL picked them up.

TalDarim Altar is one, if not the best custom map concept I've seen. His only problem was size-- which he already knows.

I find this really interesting, thanks for posting it.
I'm curious if top Korean players have been interviewed about this dude's maps, too? Like when MorroW drops in on the custom maps at TL, it's really interesting to hear what players think.

Well, that's like saying Steppes is a good concept but has problems with size. I still think Tal'Darim Altar is not good in its current state.
But if he is already aware, we might see even better maps from him in the future
|
Just for the record, Steppes is good except for the size. Add 5-8 seconds to the rush distance and its an awesome map.
|
I know that, already tried to do that as well
