Starcraft 2 World Cup 2010 New Players Edition

1st GROUP STAGE MATCHES DUE BY AUGUST 6th
2nd GROUP STAGE MATCHES DUE BY AUGUST 9th
3rd GROUP STAGE MATCHES DUE BY AUGUST 12th

Yes you read right the World Cup but Starcraft 2 style. This tournament will be run just like the World Cup does. With Groups, rounds of 16, 8, semifinals, and finally of course the finals. One person can represent their country and make it through the cup and win it. Not happy with the result on this year's World Cup, you can play it through as if you were the team!! If two or more different people want to represent a country they must fight for it and the winner will be in the tournament in a whatever group assigned.

This tournament will be run by me, Zero-D. If you want to help I could use some volunteer just pm me or email me at zerfu_7@hotmail.com. Any new commentators out there that would like to commentate games are welcome as well.

Sign up by posting here what country you want to represent, basically any real country goes.

Unfortunately or fortunately this will be for GOLD players and below, I want this tournament to be for the medium to beginner players, so they can have fun as well as to get experience and raise their skill level throughout the tournament. Same goes for those the would like to try their shot at commentating.

If a player has lost twice or any other circumstance where the player will not advance no matter what, he or she will be given a choice to play the last game or step out of it.

So show your country's colors and represent and win the WORLD CUP!!!

-Gold, Silver, and Bronze players only.
-Need to play 35 games minimum in 1v1 ladder
-US Server ONLY
-Any Race is fine, you can change throughout the tournament, just need to be contacted about change
-Pausing, Disconnect will be a loss
-The winner is responsible to send replay and saying who won.
-NO STREAMING ANY MATCHES
-Best of 1 until finals
-Best of 5 Finals
-Any suspicious activity will not be tolerated and will result in immediate disqualification. This up to the judges discretion.
-Max of 8 people on one team for prelims, USA is maxed
-Only judges will be able to spectate games upon request
-No bugs or exploits will be tolerated

**Final day to register is July 2nd, after this all registration will be final and you cannot change what country you will represent and if you lose on prelims you cannot choose another country.

**Prelims will start a week after Beta opens again, only prelims and group matches will be played if time is sufficient depending on the time available of the beta. Round games will be done when retail version is out.

**After this tournament is done. Starcraft 2 World Cup 2010 Professional Edition will be launched where platinum and diamond league players will be the requirements.

I don't know where I read it, ( probably on some other sc fansite ) one problem that people thought of is in the group stages. In the World Cup group stages, a group consists of 4 teams, in this case, 4 sc2 players. There are points awarded for a win (3 pts), draw (1 pt), and none rewarded for a loss. The reason why its 3/1/0 was to create situations where after the first or second game between the teams, scenarios would occur where each team plays out their fate while subsequently depending on the results of the other match within the group. If there was ever a scenario where everything was balanced, there are several statistics taken into account to determine the group ranking order to see who'd would advance. Sadly, there are no draws in sc2 melee, and the statistics such as goal scored, goal difference doesn't exist in sc2.

tl dr : the exact format of the world cup cant be imitated, must improvise at least for group stages (bigger groups, more/less pts for win/loss, round robin..etc etc.)

edit : the 17173.com world cup went around this with tie breakers if there are similar records within the group. although it's a solution, it's far from perfect.

Sounds good, I'll join! Before the beta ended I was a beast mode copper level player, but after the beta ended I started religiously watching Starcraft 2 strategy and commentary videos, so I might of gotten a bit better... Anyhow, I'll represent America if possible. If not I'll just take the Philippines or Germany.

However, I am a diamond player, just not the top tier of players that make it to the top of all other tournaments hosted lol. If you ask me, gold is a little to low, I think saying anyone who doesn't consider themselves "a pro" should be welcome. Most pros have quite recognizable names anyway. The tournament could be somewhat of a "take a bunch of unknowns and the winner will gain some name recognition" type of thing.

Just a suggestion though, carry on if you aren't interested in that type of thing

Note: You should clarify if one can only choose from the current WC teams or if you can pick any country. If we have to pick from the current 32 WC teams then I pick Denmark.

Edit: You should have a pool for who get to represent the U.S. I'm assuming that most people will want to represent the US, so having a playoff type of idea is kind of silly. Make sure that everyone writes down a secondary country if they are choosing the US. Then, out of the surely 10-20+ people, pick a name randomly out of the hat. On the otherhand, you could just do FCFS.

Well, technically American is a nationality and not an ethnicity (except for Native Americans), so if most people go with their ethnicity instead then it should be fine~ Hopefully this tournament stays gold and below. Every tournament is pretty much only diamond players. It's really nice knowing that there's a tournament just for lower level players. Oh and I'd like to clarify and say I'll represent Germany.

The biggest problems with gold level and below is the fact that 99% of them play the same.

0 Harass
0 Successful creativity that isn't dependent on the opponent sucking
1 Big Push and gg
~0 Microbility

I am not much different than gold players, in fact once in a while I loose to a few top 10 golds.

However, the point is, when gold players go into tournaments like these, they will most likely be reluctant to do entertaining stuff. They don't even have the basic timings all figured out. Heck never mind gold, even platinums in my league INCLUDING myself can't perform a regular macro only game well. Players like TLO are fun to watch because they already have the basics down and steady. They can then do creative strategies on top of that to bring them ahead of their opponent.

None the less I wish this tournament success, and may I suggest, winner plays WhiteRa just to see what happends? lol :D

But I have to agree with Nick.TNA here, high gold is pretty much the same as low diamond. The real "pro's" are maybe the top 2% of the diamond league.
