Poll: Was Kespa right to kill GOMtv tourny?

I have a question for the Team Liquid community regarding the Kespa / Blizzard debacle

My understanding is that Kespa blocked all its players from continuing to compete in the GOMtv tournaments that were sponsored by Blizzard.

I got that from several posts including the following from 'Go0g3n' which seems to be one of the clearest. Here's the original thread.
+ Show Spoiler +
KeSPA is a ruling agency (body) it doesn't pay anything to anybody. It's run by representative of Pro Teams and one each from OGN and MBC channels. They are the ones who will have to pay royalties for every single commercial broadcast involving StarCraft II, let alone all the sub-media that goes with it.

In US Blizzard would be entitled to a huge amount of royalties payments, in Korea it's enough to own a legal copy of the game to broadcast. Blizzard already tried to deal with relevant Korean authorities, but they were sent to "deal with KeSPA". They also tried to deal with MBC/OGN separately, failed there as well. But, and it's a big but, they can't broadcast games played over the web, i.e. on Battle.net, as it requires a completely different international license, which they won't get. Since there's no Lan - no broadcasts for now.

KeSPA answered by killing GOM. Blizzard was heavily sponsoring it, as it was getting more and more popular, probably aiming to build a platform for future SC2 broadcasts, leagues etc, they were shut down by decision of the majority KeSPA teams to not participate in GOM.

As said by artosis in a recent interview - it's a dead end with a lot of money at stake.

I covered all this in three KeSPA/Blizzard articles on GG.net

Another thing that's important is that Blizzard did absolutely nothing for StarCraft in terms of it's promotion and huge Korean and e-Sports success. They've even stopped supporting it after WC3 came out. It was KeSPA (at the time KPGA) who built the billion dollar industry of Korean StarCraft gaming and broadcasting.

On the other hand you have to realize that StarCraft broadcast is immensely profitable in Korea, be it on OGN, MBC, GOM, whatever. It costs next to nothing to create a 2+ hour broadcast that beats everything in 18-34 ratings - the most valued by advertisers. The costs are so low they can be only compared with a cheap-ass 30min/week game show, rather than 15hr/week of StarCraft broadcasts.

This is what GOM tried to do.

speaking of GOM why did it stop? i loved watching that and progamers played it and it was great quality and website
why cant u do like this?

KESPA killed it because it was being sponsored by Blizzard. They banned all the teams from participating in it. It was very sad because it did so much for e-sports. This was one of the battles in this ongoing war.
If Kespa is supposed to be all about Korean e-sports don't you think they should SUPPORT more e-sports and more tournaments?

Poll Question:

Do you agree with Kespa's decision to kill the GOMtv tournament sponsored by Blizzard by preventing Koreans progamers from participating in non Kespa events?
Poll: See above

No - Progamers should be allowed to play in any tournament they wish (134)

88%

Yes - Kespa should be allowed to block progamers from Blizzard tournys (18)

12%

Your vote: See above

(Vote): Yes - Kespa should be allowed to block progamers from Blizzard tournys
(Vote): No - Progamers should be allowed to play in any tournament they wish

Depends on the standpoint.

If you look at it in a sheer business stand point, KeSPA had all the rights in the world to restrict people. In fact, the US has a ton of those too -- it's called work contracts. Get any high paying job and see how much your boss at Goldman will like you if you start hanging around in JP Morgan's offices offering them your services. It is a work contract, KeSPA can do whatever the hell they want.

KeSPA didn't "kill" GomTV, GomTV just could not offer what KeSPA had to offer. It's not as if GomTV and Blizzard could have done nothing to stop KeSPA -- Blizzard could have stepped in and offered much more lucrative contracts to progamers, ones that could just in pay alone outdo KeSPA.

It's competition that gives freedom -- Blizzard made it clear that they had no desire to make progaming better by entering the competition. Blizzard had their chance of competing with KeSPA and having some market share, but it obviously was not priority for them. So, Blizzard backs off. They don't want to compete -- so why give them the benefits? KeSPA was just practicing standard business practices through using contracts.

If Kespa is supposed to be all about Korean e-sports don't you think they should SUPPORT more e-sports and more tournaments?

KeSPA was supporting esports by knocking Blizzard out of picture. Should they have supported more major tournaments? Well, is it efficient? Having more tournaments doesn't mean it's more competitive -- note that players spend ridiculous amount of time preparing for OSL MSL and individual leagues -- what makes you think that having more tournaments will boost competition, when it means less preparation time? Sure, it may "boost" competition, but it doesnt mean we'll have a better outcome in terms of gameplay.

Blizzard/Gom should have cooperated with Kespa. Even if players played without practice, etc, the games were fun, and it was great to have the eng commentary, it was picked up by the internet, the threads were here and there on non-gaming websites all over the web.

KeSPA didn't block players from GOMtv. Teams just chose not to participate because it wasn't in their interests to do so.

My understand of the situation was that KeSPA didn't forbade anyone from participating in GOM rather they didn't sanction it, meaning players would not improve in the KeSPA ratings because of it. The reason the GOM tournament died was because MBC/OGN/eSTRO/SKT all didn't participate and with such little incentive to participate, the league was pulled. Now those teams didn't participate because they all had vested interest in GOM not succeeding - MBC/OGN because it would be another rival corporation in the market, eSTRO since IEG owns the rights to Proleague, and SKT because at the time the head coach of SKT was also the chair of KeSPA - hence didn't want to see the league succeed.

A poll with such pointed wording, such as "kill", when it wasn't even the case.

Anyways, you surely didn't expect teams to support the competitors of their sponsors, as Plexa has noted, do you?

I think I should clear the misconception that the head coach of SKT is chair of KeSPA. I believe this is simply a mistranslation, as if I recall correctly it's the chairman/some head guy of SK Telecom.

i dont think any of us know anywhere near enough to comment on this situation. the dealings of korean gaming administrative juntas with multinational gaming conglomerates is far more complex than a TL.net poll.

kespa has the marketing and infrastructure but blizzard owns the intellectual property (whatever that means).

also this is correct

okay i just did some researching and the current head of kespa is 조기행 (jo kihaeng), who is the president of SK Telecom's GMS division.

regardless of who is right and who is wrong,

I'm just worried this will hurt the SC community as a whole. Its a shame someone has to "win" and someone has to "lose", I'm betting Blizzard will win (it's their game), but I'm sad they officially cut communications now with Kespa, someone's going to take a huge hit.
The probability of Kim Carrier getting all those predictions wrong is similar to the probability Flash loses a TvT. Kim Carrier MUST BE a genius. His only big mistake... STORK.

While KeSPA might be fully in control of SC markets now, I just don't see how they're going to continue to have leverage over a company like blizzard who obviously has rights to their intellectual property.

KeSPA's only point of contention is that because they developed a market for eSports then it should be only fair that it be allowed to regulate it in Korea. But KeSPA cannot continue to keep that mindset when it has to play nice with governing bodies from other nations who abide by blizzard's rules and regulations.

This is a silly question. The results of your poll should show you how skewed of a question it is. Its like "Do you think rape is acceptable?" You don't need a poll for that because 90% of people will say no. It's business, there isn't a good guy or bad guy - it's just business.
