“Porn” Among Top Search Terms for Kids

In a somewhat worrying piece of news, security firm Symantec has released the top search terms by kids in 2009. Topping the lists: “YouTube”, “Google”, “Facebook”, “sex” and “porn”.

While that result set might not be surprising in the teen search rankings, it’s interesting to note that “porn” ranks 4th in the “7 and under” category, receiving more searches than “Club Penguin” and “Webkinz (Webkinz)“. Meanwhile, “sex” is fourth for teens and tweens alike. Facebook (Facebook), YouTube (YouTube) and Google (Google) take the other top spots.

The data was compiled from 14.6 million searches made using Symantec’s OnlineFamily.Norton, which lets parents track their kids’ online activity. And while Symantec is almost certainly hoping to sell more software as a result, it’s also a timely reminder that kids are growing up fast these days.

LOL!

I think the funniest thing about this is that kids are searching Google.

edit: Goddamnit slowness.

Obviously it was the parents testing if the censorship software works.

Well they might be searching for specific google products, like google wave, google chrome etc. I know i search for google wave whenever I need to get there because I haven't bothered to remember the url or bookmark it.

I search for google like 20 times a day, by writing google in the URL bar and hitting enter, firefox automatically opens the top search on google I think, which just so happens to be google.

I think this as well. Notice how porn didn't even show up in the 8-12 section but was all the way at #5 in the under 7 section. Has to be parents.

Poor kids minds, they are getting poisoned so early and so broadly these days. Generic porn isn't the worst thing they can find.

This probably has a lot to do with. That along with parents who need to buy this to monitor their kids online usage tend to have little knowledge about computers make it likely the results are skewed from the parents searching as well. I'm assuming the software needs to be activated and deactivated in order to record what the child is searching, so if the parent forgets to deactivate the software or simply doesn't realize it needs to be done, the results will be contaminated. Considering how huge this sample size is and how likely it is that the parents are retarded, I'm pretty sure this tells us basically nothing about what children are searching for on the internet. Also, considering how small the average child's vocabulary is I doubt they know the word porn.

I saw my first porn when I was like 6. And I turned out completely normal.

Completely.

Normal.

LOL

Also why are there kids 7 and under on the internet? Aren't they too busy learning how to pee in the toilet and rotting their brains with Teletubbies?

That's what I thought too. When I was a kid I would search "boobs" "big boobs" "GIGANTIC BOOBS", not porn.

I remember how hard it was to find porn when i was a kid.
These little bastards have it easy.
These sites might be of more use than a StarCraft site, where the majority of posters look on WCIII as the dense misformed fetus produced during Blizzards latest miscarrige.

if you did find porn, its usually full of viruses and popups... they really cleaned up the porn industry nowadays.

but seriously, my sister plays games on the internet... shes 7 and i don't think anyone her age knows porn or sex...
