Tomorrow, we enter the last week of Proleague Round 1, and indeed, what a round it has been. We've seen everything from nukes to Dark Archons and it's been an absolute blast covering Korea's best for you. As we look at the week ahead, and look back at the many weeks gone by, we are reminded once again of why we follow this league with such gusto - it is truly the bottom line. While the individual leagues are awesome and winning one is something every player wants to do, it's the five round long slow slog to the finish that really defines a player, and indeed, brings together a team. At the end of this week, one of those rounds finishes, and the teams at the top of the table are vastly different from the teams that finished at the top of R5 last season.
First off, MBC? Who? Yes, folks MBC HERO has a chance of finishing in the top four this round, and leading the way is Sea, with a monster 9 - 1 record so far. In fact, in the absence of Statisfaction we're going to divert for a moment to give you nerds some pure standings courtesy of our Korean investigator Konadora.

MBC in 2nd place, Sea in second place, and it's all happening just as predicted. Of course, MBC are a long way away from a playoff spot, and as sceptics might say, this is just the first round. In fact, the columnist we contacted seemed to think along these lines so let's see what he has to say. To talk more about the boys in black here's Plexa, one of TL's most rabid MBC fanboys, with Just Visiting, a Proleague guest column.
Just Visiting - MBC: Sink or swim?
By Plexa
After last seasons disappointing drop into the lower echelons of progaming, 2006 Proleague Champions MBCGame Hero have stormed back with a vengeance and ravaged their way back into the top four. Whats the secret? Was it fresh blood in the camp? Nope. Was it a slumping player returning to form? Almost. What was the secret? They brought back Coach Ha - one of the best in the business. Well, that in addition to their old players coming back into pseudo-form.
While this is all great for MBC as a short-term fix, bringing back your old greats to lead the way to the future in an inherently flawed strategy. MBC has consistently relied on it's older players to step up and lead the way for the rest of the team. Ever since they lost Bisu and Coach Park they've really stopped cultivating new talent. They've tried - but look how that turned out;
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/Plexa/Backseat_Broodwar/jaehoon.jpg)
Yes, once upon a time Jaehoon was a Protoss player with potential! He featured in the MSL Prematch tournament back in 2006 (right when Longinus was still a twilight map) and his impressive Macro play made him look like the next big Protoss star. But clearly that just simply hasn't eventuated. Furthermore, han has been "almost great" for a while now - indeed he took out Jaedong back in the OSL Prelims in the season before Jaedong won his 2nd OSL. Han has started to show some promise, but really, he doesn't look like anything overly special. Hyun falls into the same category as Han - almost great - but constantly falls short.
Sadly, it's up to the veterans Sea, Light, Saint and Pusan to lead the way. But bleh, Pusan isn't playing anything resembling good Starcraft at the moment (despite the hype). Saint is getting some lucky wins, but his ZvT is so abysmal it's depressing. Now we come to the two pillars of MBC - Light and Sea. Unfortunately, despite Sea's results - he's only playing TvT. Sea's recent turn of good results is a reflection of his good TvT - and nothing else (and he's specialized on Moon Glaive as well, that will get rotated out soon probably as well). Sea failed in both prelims because of his TvZ/TvP - and I don't know how much you can really trust him.
Light... Light is an enigma. Light is the "ace" of MBC in the sense that he's the best player, but he's just not phenomenal. A teams strength can be gauged by the strength of it's Ace - never in the history of Progaming has a team been successful without a star player to back them. Light just doesn't stack up as a star player. Yea, he pulls results. Yea, he plays okay. But he much better plays the role of support player to say Sea than the star of the show. If Light is able to pull some real league results then maybe he'll be able to take that next jump and take MBC with him - but in all honesty I don't see that happening.
So while the skies are clear at the moment for MBC, and a top four placing is in sight, there are dark clouds looming on the horizon. Without any deserving talent coming through it is only a matter of time before the Veterans fail and the team descends into a eSTRO like state where they are incapable of winning stuff since they have a roster full of mediocre players. *sigh* as a MBC fan I wish there was something more heartening to talk about.. but unfortunately, MBC is a team living in the past - quite literally - and that has to end very very soon.
So MBC stay or MBC go? We dunno, but it's just good to see them around the top of the charts again. Let's hope that Sea keeps kicking it well in to Round 2, because let's face it, he is by far TL's favourite progamer. ;-)
In fact, Light's lacklustre performance in R1 has been more than made up for by Sea, who has shown some fantastic play in PL even though he failed to qualify for either individual league this season. Slowly but surely, Sea has been accumulating wins every week, basically winning every game he plays to accrue a formidable record of 9-1. How we've overlooked this fact for so many weeks is something that still eludes us, but it is perhaps because Sea has often been overshadowed by Flash, who, by the way, is also at 9-1, only outdone by Zero at a record of 10-4. Although it's true that he has faced mostly Terrans this month, 9 - 1 is a cracker score sheet regardless, and for that he adorns our cover today. Go Sea!
Sea[Shield] is #1 on the Power Rank this month, and #1 in our hearts, this day and forevermore.

Alright, let's get back to this week's games. From Anytime's old school 1 gate tech against Hyuk, to Hwasin's discovery of his burning CC just seconds too late, this week's games, despite being laden with mirrors, have still managed to be hugely entertaining to us fans.
Of course, how could we forget to mention Boxer-Yellow - the continuation of a rivalry almost as old as progaming itself. This time, Yellow emerged victorious, bringing Boxer to his knees with some great play: muta harass first picking off lots of marines, then lurker ling taking out Boxer's push without even the need for swarm.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/keit/yellow_tl.png)
Yellow, rubbing it in.
His teammate, Anytime, then brought the game to ace. There, Best beat out Darkelf in a rather intense match and SKT took the win, going 2-0 with a previous win over WeMade FOX earlier in the week. With that, SKT rises 2 places to third place with a score of 6-3.
WeMade, previously in 2nd place, falls to 4th with consecutive losses against both KT and SKT. Shine's outstanding performance of 5-1 in R1 did not buy him an ace match appearance, and Mind chose an inopportune moment to founder, leading to a loss against KT. In fact, Mind's game against Bisu in the SKT set was similarly disappointing, as he found himself facing a Protoss with almost the whole map and a thousand gateways, eventually falling after repeated recalls.
Putting themselves firmly in first place is KT, continuing their strong play into week 6. At the rate they're going, it doesn't look like anyone will be defeating them anytime soon. While Forgg still has yet to step up his game, Flash is consistently winning games, and is supported by Violet and Luxury, the former winning all his games this week, including an ace match, to go 3-0. With a tally of 8-1, KT is looking, at the least, at a tied first place finish to R1.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/keit/violet_tl.png)
Violet might be just the support Flash needs as he takes KT into Round 2.
Moving on, while STX Soul started off R1 with plenty of wins, they now find themselves picking up more losses then they should be. Everything went wrong for them this week, despite a match against KHAN, which should've easily been a free win. After Frozean fought to bring the set into ace, Hwasin stumbled against Stork's fast DTs, even allowing his command center to burn down after having been brought into the red by Stork's dragoons. Stork easily cleaned up with a recall into Hwasin's main, and with only 1 scanner and barely any units, Hwasin had no hope of defending.
Speaking of KHAN, despite picking up a win this week, they still show no signs of improvement. Only Stork is putting up any results, and this week, he certainly carried the team to victory, winning all of his games. In fact, if you took a look at his record, Stork comes in at 5-1 in R1, a pretty respectable score - you'd never think his team was losing as much as they are. Joining KHAN at the bottom of the bracket are hite and OZ, whose key players, Jaedong and Leta have been, surprisingly, losing more games than they've been expected to this round.
Now, for a break! Here's pangshai with this week's GOTW, a match that you should definitely catch if you didn't get a chance to see it live.
GOTW - Effort vs Free on Match Point
By Pangshai
This week's Game of the Week features two big names - Free, a Protoss who has been performing pretty well in proleague recently, and Effort, the successor to CJ's zerg throne. Clashing on Match Point, a map introduced this season that to us laymen would seem like a vertical Blue Storm with some hints of Peaks of Baekdu, we expect a great game to be played out.
The game opened as expected, Effort overpooling and double expanding to his nat and the top left gas base, and Free FEing while trying, with some success, to block Effort's hatchery. Entering the midgame, Free teched up to stargate and started corsair production and their weapons upgrade, and Effort, predictably, dropped a couple more hatcheries after getting his spire. Strangely, however, Effort opted for mutalisks, instead of making the transition into hydras - in hindsight, a poor choice against Free's gradually rising corsair count.
As Effort's mutas arrived at Free's nat accompanied by some scourges, Free greeted him with more than enough corsairs to turn him away, but not before Effort sniped off a fair number of probes. With Effort's mutas now on the run, Free took the opportunity to expand to his mineral only, while a small force of zealots were sent out to put some pressure on the Zerg. Unfortunately, the zealots met a well simcitied base, but Free found success elsewhere, catching most of Effort's mutas with his corsairs.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/pangshai/br16a.jpg)
With his third up, Free started adding new gateways, while harassing with his corsairs and a couple of DTs, nabbing a group of overlords in the process. Effort, sick of being on the receiving end of things, then brought his hydra army to Free's third looking to destroy it and even the game a little. Roughly 2 groups of hydras stormed into the mineral only, but storm rained down on them, and the defense of 4 cannons held. A second attempt with some new reinforcements was similarly turned away, putting Effort further behind.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/pangshai/br16b.jpg)
Undeterred, Effort took his mineral only, and with a small number of lurkers, set up a nice formation on the high ground above Free's mineral only, in the meantime, heading towards hive. Instead of engaging the lurkers from low ground, Free simply marched his army out via the small ramp at his nat and headed towards Effort's third. Upon scouting this, Effort quickly retreated his lurkers, but tragically, they were caught in transit and decimated. It seemed the game would be over quickly; Free had an insanely large army - enough to roll Effort easily.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/pangshai/br16c.jpg)
What happened next was some amazing defense by Effort. Time and again, he sniped Free's observers, enabling him to just barely defend with his lurkers and lings. Each time when it seemed like Free was just about to break through his defense, he'd successfully kill Free's observers, and force Free to retreat, buying more time for him to rebuild his units and for his hive tech to kick in. Many battles raged at the Effort's high ground, and Free was denied a countless amount of times, despite reinforcing with both units and observers.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/pangshai/br16d.jpg)
Effort too, was on top of Free's expanding, keeping him from taking a third gas with some ninja lings. Eventually, hive tech kicked in, and with Free's gases depleted, and minerals running dry, he was unable to reinforce his army. Swarm and adrenalings took their toll, and Free was forced back with lings on his tail.
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/pangshai/br16e.jpg)
In control now, Effort simply expanded and continued denying Free his third gas, attacking everywhere with lings. He broke through at Free's nat after a while, drawing the GG from Free in an excellent game.
Effort's constant scourging of Free's observers put a huge dent in Free's attacks, and with Free being so close to breaking through every time, he probably didn't see the need to take another base, instead committing all his resources into the attack that failed. Tragic defeat for the Protoss player, but a great game overall.
Following that brief interlude, as our final feature we now give you pachi's world famous FPL update, featuring an interview with none other than IntoTheWow.

The final week approaches and the race is tight with the points difference at the top almost negligible due to trades. IntoTheWow has pushed himself into top position with a heavy trading game, but his position is shaky with many others nipping at his heels.

SUMMARY
- Violet Streak
KT Rolster has returned to the money making table, earning 11 points for its owners (just under the week high of 12 points by MBC). However, the top earners of the weeks were the players with Violet bringing in 14 points after an ace win and Stork redeeming himself with 11. Flash also in the big earners but still trails Zero in total points. - Rolstered
KT Rolster cemented their place as the team of the competition with a clear points lead over rivals SKT1 and the new in 3rd place MBCGame HERO. KT now has 3 players in the top ten points earners while Woongjin Stars has two and SKT1 has none. However streaky runs by players like Sea, ZerO and Really have allowed smart traders to cash in an keep the fight fair. - You khan be saved
Stork has brought redemption to Samsung KHAN, returning it from the depths and pushing it not only into a positive total points but ahead in its unexpected rivalry with ACE for bottom position. Making team choices tricky for next round, Hwaseung and Hite also both occupy unexpectedly low ranks. - Wrapping Up
While there are only Four playdays left, the big stars have two matches each keeping the race interesting. KT, SKT1, STX and Hite finally butt heads again with each other which could ultimately push the KT Rolster pack into fantasy proleague domination.
INTERVIEW
IntoTheWow - Currently in First place.
Forum vigilante, Argentinian secret agent - ITW is many things. This round, he is also using his ninja prowess to kick it in FPL. + Show Spoiler [Interview] +
This Season
1. Trades have been working out for you. What's your secret? Luck?
I think the only variable that people look at when trading is the number of games each player has. There's more things to consider when making trades, what set the player plays in, the map, against who, is he going to streak?, who can i trade him for later on, etc.
2. Do you think you made smart trades or is your huge trade gain because you had such mediocre players like BaBy and Hogil to start with?
Actually the most "bold" trade I did (which i was scared it would go wrong) was getting type-b, which turned out to be "decent". I choose my initial team with heavy trading in mind, trying to avoid really high cost players and really low cost players (which are both hard to trade).
Having a bad start kept me from getting high performers like KT, Violet, Luxury, HyuK, etc.
3. Your original team was built with trades in mind, do you think this is the way to go or this season just worked out for you?
It can work as much as it can't. I was really scared at the start cause nothing turned out as I predicted. KT + Lux got a ridiculous amount of points, HyuK raped, woongjin went negative and Sea gave me a lot of negative points on my anti.
I had to trade my higher cost players (like Calm) in order to get the most clear trades. But I also had to play risky with shaky trades like hyvaa, Midas, type-b.
4. Sea migrated from your antiteam to your main team. Bad initial choice or some kind of sick game plan?
I spend like 2 or 3 days discussing my main team with other people, and when the time came to submit my final team (like an hour before the deadline) I realized I had no anti-team, so I picked what I could figure out at the time. Sea was clearly a bad choice, after the initial -14 he gave I saw him come out more and I knew I had to get him before he got more expensive.
5. Whats with that SangHo Lomo shuffle? Are you just letting everyone else have a chance?
hhahaha I just traded one for another each week depending on who was playing and who wasn't. The problem is I forgot both of them suck so much so all I got from those trades was some - points from the trade tax.
6. Why are you in the winning by doing stupid things group. What was your stupid thing?
I actually joined the team this week, cause I saw a post by somebody angry cause I got -4 only from having Calm on my anti team for 3 weeks.
Made me chuckle.
7. What kind of effort do you put into your fpl team/trades? Group meetings? Sidebets?
I have a sidebet with zulu_nation8. His most expensive player AND captain is Leta. He scored 21 points. lol.
I usually pick the trades I'm going to do by myself as soon as the line-ups are out, then I check them with other players to see if I missed something important.
8. Why are you the only argentine in the Argentina group. Are you happy that you are actually finally winning that group?
I'm actually more happy that I'm winning my sidebet this time. : )
Next Week
1. Woongjin/Zero plays once this week, how big a disadvantage will this be?
I think it will come down to how much T1 and KT ace. Woongjin is playing only once, but they are playing ACE. If Woongjin goes 3-0 or if they go 3-2 with ZerO acing I should be 'ok'. *crosses fingers*
2. What do you think your chances for winning this are? How bad do you want this?
I REALLY want to win this. I was so close on the first round, got to top 10 fairly easy, but I could never catch up with Intrigue and his ridiculous luck. I hope luck stays on my side this time.
3. Actually closer inspection, the only player on your team that appears to have two games this week is Calm. Are you panicking?
I trade a lot! :3
Next Season
1. Any predictions on overrated / underrated picks for next season?
90% of the teams will have JangBi. Jaedong should be pretty cheap and hopefully he will start acing again, which will make him a good choice.
No one will pick RuBy. ZerO will be closer to his real price, he has been underrated for like 2 seasons in a row.
Everyone will pick Luxury (myself included) and he will slump again![](/mirror/smilies/frown.gif)

Ever since his move to STX, FrOzean has become a whole new person. He is no longer the former fail Terran, infamous for his 0% winrate in 08-09 Proleague under Samsung Khan. STX has been fielding him often, with very good results. 3-1 in fact, dropping only a game to RorO. However, his opponent is BeSt, who is currently on a 5 game PvT winning streak, even defeating the "Little Monster"

This game is a coin-flip, it may turn out to be an epic fight between one of the most aggressive Zergs and one of the most solid Terrans, or it may just be yet another TvZ. I'll bet on the former though. If you had been following Ruby, his gameplay standard has skyrocketed. Putting aside his... misfortune of meeting 5 Terrans in a row (including the OSL) and losing 6 straight TvTs, we can't say that RuBy has lost his spark. He is still currently ACE's undisputed ace player, but he has to show that he can lead his team into victories by taking down Kwanro, another team-changer who recently went 2-0 in his MSL group, defeating the TvZ specialist, the 'Red Sniper'

These two have some history. Sea has been known for playing very consistently, but there was always a player he had trouble overcoming - Stork. When Sea finally defeated Stork on Blue Storm during the 2008 Proleague All-Stars, Sea couldn't help but cry, "Mom, I finally defeated Stork-hyung!". Sea may get another chance to perform a victory ceremony, but it will be tough, given both the map and Stork's current status. Stork's on fire, going 5-1 in Proleague and getting silver (lol) in WCG 2009 Chengdu Grand Finals. Will Sea suffer yet another defeat to his nemesis, or will he shout and jump again in joy?

I hate to admit it, but chances are, The Maestro probably won't win against the current Jaedong. If it was before his WCG win, it may have been possible. But now, it doesn't look so good.
Still, when two big names clash, we can't help but hope for an epic outcome. Just because there is almost no chance doesn't mean there isn't no chance.
