[PL] Tag Teamed

This Shinhan Bank building, found in the Teuk Byul Si area of Seoul, is just one of many Korean landmarks
TL's Proleague coverage will be taking you through this season.

The first week of Proleague 2009-10 has come and gone, and if we may just say so ourselves, wow! While STX and KT both went 2-0 this week, KT's Flash/Luxury tag team net the frontpage for performing consistently and doing their part to ensure both their team's victories. Of course, this week wasn't just about results either. From stellar games in the form of Luxury vs Upmagic on Outsider and Calm vs Movie on HBR, to our very own Chill completely monopolising the foreign fan representation at games, PL's opening run was awesome for Starcraft fans, and in particular for Team Liquid.

So what is Chill doing in Korea? There are many stories. Some say that he is there because the Koreans themselves were not elitist enough with regard to build orders and their relevancy / usefulness, and wanted some fine tuned foreign condescension to kick their younglings into shape. Others say that Chill's antics are all just a part of an elaborate advertising campaign to promote his new progaming swag label Learn2PlayStarcraft,Noobs™. At the end of the day though, the truth is out there, and we can all just expect to see more and more of our benevolent Strategy forum dictator on Korean TV.

The Chill 1000 deploys its patented get the camera to look at me every single time technology.

Now, on to the games. Looking at this week's results, we immediately see a couple of teams, namely STX Soul and KT Rolster, which have outperformed the rest, going 2-0 in both their matches. As we said earlier, KT breezed through the opposition effortlessly, with the team aces Flash and Luxury taking their games with what seemed like superlative ease, and starting off the season in a dominating fashion. Luxury's play brought to mind the player we saw prior to the Lost Saga MSL slump, and with KT's hopes of getting to the playoffs this season built upon Luxury's and Flash's continued ability to win games, things are looking up for them, although basing such assumptions off a couple of games is a poor basis. Sadly, Forgg was unable to complete the heroic trio, failing once again to step up to the plate, losing in a rather mediocre game to Sangho.

STX, helmed by reigning MSL champion Calm, similarly went 2-0, and is becoming a regular at the top of the proleague leaderboard. Unlike KT, however, STX's 2-0 was fraught with more obstacles, Calm barely edging out Movie in an intense game on Heartbreak Ridge that revealed, more than anything, Movie's inexperience and nerves. Facing Calm's relentless templar sniping, Movie clearly got frustrated and the resultant attack-moving of his army into Calm's rows of hydras, despite the absence of a 4th base or hive tech from Calm, was a very poor decision, allowing Calm to eventually win the game.

STX's 2nd win came after a nerve-wracking ace match against Oz. Upon hearing the phrase "ace match" and Oz, most of us usually assume Jaedong would feature as one of the players - unfortunately, Coach Cho had other plans this time, and he sent Killer up against an equally strange pick, Modesty. It must have been a conspiracy to deny the fans of a good game, and a good summary of the game found in the live report thread was

While ZvZ isn't the most engaging of matchups, after watching the game and thinking of the possible Calm-Jaedong rematch that we missed out on, we really wish that both teams had just sent out different Zergs.

As far as games go this week though, the awesome back and forth melee on Outsider fought by Luxury and Upmagic clearly stands out among the rest. In fact, we thought it was so good that we chose to feature it in this week's Game Of The Week battle report.

GOTW - Luxury vs Upmagic on Outsider
By Pangshai

The game began rather uneventfully, both players opting for safe economic builds, Upmagic opening with a 1rax CC into 2port build and Luxury going for 3 hatch muta, taking his double gas expo slightly before the completion of his spire. Upon completion of his starports, however, Upmagic deviated from the wraiths that everyone had expected, getting add ons on both his starports. Having priorly started an armory, this could only mean valkyries, and true enough, when Luxury's mutas arrived at his main, 3 valkyries turned them away easily.

Understanding the mobility constrains of a valk/mech build, Luxury proceeded to expand and add new hatcheries, at the same time, teching towards hive, looking to macro up a huge economy before producing units to engage Upmagic's mech army. Unfortunately for Luxury, Upmagic was not planning on passive play, and 2 dropships of goliaths and marines made their way across the map, heading for Luxury's double gas. With roughly 12 or so mutas, it would've been suicide for Luxury to engage the force that included 5 valks, and thus, he wisely decided to give the expansion up, exacting revenge on the returning, empty dropships.

Having bunkered up behind the mineral line of the other expansion, Upmagic had effectively put 2 expos out of commission, taking the wind out of Luxury's freshly completed hive tech sails, and an attempt by Luxury to take out this fortification left him further behind, ending somewhat poorly with the lost of a number of mutas, although the goliaths, which were just in range of the hatchery, were taken out.

This presented an opportune moment for Upmagic - Luxury, having committed to teching, expanding and upgrades, now had few units, a weak economy, and a small tank/goliath army knocking at his front door. Thankfully, Luxury did not panic despite being threatened by the Terran player, and he sent his mutas to take out Upmagic's reinforcements, while building up a large number of hydras - this calm, collected, and strategic reasoning allowed Luxury to catch a couple of Terran units making their way down to join the push, and he dispatched them easily. When Upmagic finally pushed a tank into range of his nat hatchery, Luxury delivered the killing blow, hydras advancing from the front, and mutas coming in from behind to pick off the tanks, and although he lost all his mutas in the process, Luxury took out the push convincingly.

While the battle raged, Luxury had established a number of new expansions and with the conclusion of the battle in his favour, appeared to be in a decent position again. It seemed though, that he had forgotten about the bunker that he had left standing, and the marines within laid waste to a new expansion and some drones. Taking a brief look at expo counts now put Luxury at 4 running, and Upmagic at 2 with another coming up, and besides some minorly successful harass from Upmagic, both players were content with sitting on their expansions and macroing up huge armies.

Upmagic then made the first move after a relative stalemate, driving his huge mech army down to take residence at Luxury's choke. His army out of position to engage Upmagic's, Luxury's only option was to counter, and his hydras made their way to Upmagic's nat, while at the same time, a hydra drop took out Upmagic's expo before continuing into his main. Both players then proceeded to pillage the other's mains, finding little resistance in each, and at the end of it all, Upmagic had lost all his CCs, but had a huge army remaining, and Luxury had 3 running expansions, although 2 were taken out shortly after.

Knowing that Upmagic couldn't possibly have any detection, with no CCs or vessels, Luxury put the pressure on, attacking a freshly reconstructed CC at Upmagic's nat with hydralurk and swarm, forcing upmagic to lift off and return to his quickly depleting main. At Luxury's 9 oclock base, he had upped his hatchery count to 5, and with them, easily droned up his new top left base. Things seemed bleak for Upmagic, with his economy struggling at less than 10 SCVs, and Luxury compounding his advantage by taking the 9 nat. A few moments later, Luxury loaded up his army, dropped it on Upmagic's tanks, and despite major losses on both sides, Upmagic knew the game was over, and threw in the towel.

An innovative opening from Upmagic, reminiscent of Protoss' corsair reaver, with a strong push to follow up, but ultimately, Luxury's intelligent and measured responses were perfect counters to the unconventional strategy, stealing the game from Upmagic's grasp.

Continuing where we left off, while definitely the biggest, the choice of players for the STX-Oz ace match was definitely not the only surprise of the week. eSTRO trouncing former champions SKT 3-1 also came as a bombshell to many of us. Amongst the games played, the Classic-Best set came through as the gem amongst the rocks, featuring the build that can loosely be termed the deep six. As Classic's tank supported marine medic army made its way across the map, Best's 2 base arbiter was unable to halt its progress, and eventually Classic bunkered up at Best's nat, and following a failed recall at Classic's main, Best typed out, giving eSTRO the 2-1 lead. Thezerg then rounded it up by losing to Hyvaa on Outsider to give eSTRO a huge win.

DJ Classic, mixing stuff up like it's nobody's business.

Now, bringing the week's surprises to a close is ACE. Despite losing to MBC, they managed to force an ace match that eventually resulted in Ruby getting taken out by Sea. Although he subsequently lost, Ruby was actually playing pretty good, and was in a reasonable position before deciding to throw units away, and performing some poor yamatos. In the other games, short of the one involving Reach, the ACE players also fared decently, Gorush administering a complete rape of Jaehoon, and Darkelf playing a nice TvT against MBC's ace. Perhaps this is a sign that ACE may not be wallowing in the depths of the leaderboard again this season, although MBC themselves haven't been performing too well, and bringing MBC to a 5th game is not a significant accomplishment. That said, ACE does show some potential to create some upsets here and there, and we look forward to that.

To end off this update, we thought it'd be apt to single out some games from week 2's lineups that can potentially be pretty monumental. At first glance, Luxury-Light looks like a definite must watch - with both players in good form recently, this promises to be a blast. Light, having defeated Jaedong on Outsider before, will definitely not be a pushover on this map, although it is lamentable that Light will not be given the chance to innovate on the newer maps.

If you're a sucker for young, upcoming players on their meteoric rise to glory, Kal vs Baby will surely be an interesting match. In GOM season 3, Baby's run included a series win against then PvT pro, Jangbi, and it'd be nice to see that level of play again from the 15 year old. Unfortunately, he has also recently come off losses to less accomplished Protosses, YoonJoong and Movie, in disappointing games. Hopefully, he'll show more consistency and provide a good game for us fans against Kal.

Lastly, we pay homage to some of the oldschool players who have not been seen playing in proleague for a long long time. Both Pusan and Midas will be playing next week, in mirror matches, against very strong opponents. Pusan has been on fire recently, owning up both MSL and OSL preliminaries, and Midas, fresh off a transfer to WeMade Fox, is probably burning to show his teammates how well he can do. Optimistically, they will bring their A game to the table and we can look forward to Midas' awkward ceremonies once more.

Now, news for nerds. We know you've been agonising all week over your fantasy picks. Some of the Proleague staff too have suffered greatly at the hands of this week's upsets, and if you're anything like them, you're eagerly awaiting retribution in Week 2. In that vein, we bring you pachi with the first Fantasy Proleague update of the 2009-10 season.

Fantasy PL 09-10 Round 1 - Week 1
By Pachi

The lines have been drawn and the battle has begun for Fantasy Proleague Season 4. Fantasy Proleague has grown again with almost 2000 entries and after the first week it is Dark_Storm that leads the pack.

In the news this week,
  • KT Rolster and Hiya were the must have picks of the week with their owners dominating the standings along with the 8 point stars of Flash, Calm and Luxury.

  • Stork (who is on more main teams than Flash) as expected earned nothing, while Leta unexpectedly crashed and burned along with Hite.

  • Sea flipped off the team bench into the ace match to ninja nearly 200 anti-teams.

  • Jaedong denied his first chance to play, demolished his next opponent only to be left blue-balled when Killer was sent instead for the ace match, leaving him with a rather unimpressive five points.

To wrap up this week, here are some short interviews with some performers of the week.

pripple - Currently in Ninth place.
pripple is a man who stands out in Fantasy Proleague. In his first time playing fantasy proleague last season, he beat out a field of over 1500 entries to be the champion. This season, pripple is armed with a zerg heavy team and a currently pristine anti-team.

+ Show Spoiler [Week One with pripple] +
1) Which player on your team are you happiest with?

HiyA has been such a nice surprise, wasn't so sure about him as he had to face Leta and has been doing bad overall, he ended up being the 2nd best player of my team so far.

2) How do you feel about STX vs Oz Ace match?

I haven't seen the actual game yet due to my computer being broken, but i've seen some messages that Oz's coaches have been boasting that they can make the playoffs without using JD for aces at Round1, i sure hope this ain't true. Hopefully the loss makes Oz use JD again so he can be worth the 10 points!

3) Are you worried about falling behind with Jaedong rather than if you had Bisu or Flash?

Not too worried yet, as there's still a long way to go. It took me hours to decide whether i should take JD or Flash but i ended up with JD, being such a fanboy.
Bisu wasn't even an option as i don't like the guy ;p

4) Whats your goal this season?

If i'll make top10 this time aswell i'll be more than glad, with so many teams involved even top50 is an achievement.

5) Any trade secrets you are thinking of?

Hard to plan any trades yet as the week2 lineups ain't out yet, maybe get rid of Kwanro if he ain't facing 2 scrubs next week!

Dyno. - Currently in Third place.
Dyno., as the 7th place finisher in the first Fantasy Proleague, currently leads the exclusive Former Top 10 club in Third place overall. A noticeable feature of his team is the exclusion of top zerg players, with Savior being his mandatory Zerg.

+ Show Spoiler [Week One with Dyno.] +
1) Which player on your team are you happiest with?

Definitely Hiya. So far, he is performing well above his initial point cost (fourth highest trade value increase among players this week). Not to mention he's playing great.

2) With the large zerg presence expected for this season, why do you have so few zergs?

Given the playtesting results, I was actually trying to steer away from protoss more than I was trying to pick up zergs. Yes, teams are leaning towards zerg, but Iris is the only non-zerg on my team that isn't considered #1 of his particular race on his team. Seeing as he's the most picked player this FPL, I doubt I need to explain my rationale for picking him.

My original team was Jaedong/Flash/Iris/Movie/July/han/KT. Despite loving Jaedong and disliking Bisu, I had to swap them because I could not justify taking Jaedong over Bisu when Bisu was a point cheaper and had two guaranteed games against weak opponents compared to Jaedong's two games against strong opponents (only one guaranteed to take place). Since swapping Jaedong for Bisu gave me an extra point to spend, I was able to upgrade han to a two-point zerg (had to be a zerg since I got rid of July and Jaedong) and savior was the best 2-point zerg available given the lineups.

3) Is fantasy proleague luck or skill?

Since trading was implemented, skill has definitely become much more of a factor than it used to be. If there were zero or very little skill involved, then there would be no explanation for why the former champions and former top 10 groups always do well.

That said, there's still a very large amount of luck involved and anyone who thinks there isn't is kidding themselves.

4) Whats your goal this season?

To win, of course. Actually, last season, my friend pandabearguy and I had a sidebet on FPL, but we didn't do one this season.

Other than winning, I'd have to say my goal would be to the player who gained the most points off trade at the end of the season. I came pretty close last season (leading for some of it), but didn't finish in the lead. I think that this particular stat is the one most indicative of skill over the course of a season. More decisions means more opportunities to personally take control of your results instead of leaving them to chance.

5) Any trade secrets you are thinking of?

Yes, don't tell anyone your trade secrets.

But really, I will say that you _cannot_ let the -1 point penalty bother you when making trades. If you're confident, and you should always be confident in your trades or you shouldn't be making them, that the player you're trading for will earn more points next week than the player you're trading away, then you have nothing to lose. If you're right, then the worst that can possibly happen is you gain only 0 points off the trade.

If the trade goes poorly, well, that sucks, but it happens. Just like in poker when you have to train yourself not to feel bad about losing a pot where you feel you truly made all the right plays, you can't let yourself feel bad about a trade that you felt 100% confident was a good one. And you definitely can't let it discourage you from making more trades in the future.

I have a great time playing Fantasy Proleague and I want to thank all the staff members responsible for making it happen; especially Hot_Bid, Abydos, and semioldguy for their instrumental roles in its success.

Good luck everyone.

Abydos1 - Currently in 26th place
Abydos1 is Fantasy Proleague. With his finishes at 216th and 460th, he is not a man to mess with. Traumatizing past aside, Abydos1 is responsible for creating the coding for fantasy proleague and is currently doing quite well for himself despite not having an eight pointer in his main team.

+ Show Spoiler [Week One with Abydos1] +
First, I actually spent the least time thinking about my team this round; I picked my team last minute and didn't go through my usual 20 something changes, lol.

1) Which player on your team are you happiest with?

Hiya, going 2-0 including a win against Leta for a 2 pt pick is a great start; his trade value jumped to 3.17 so he's already worth the value in pts or trade potential.

2) How do you feel about STX vs Oz Ace match?

WTF was the Oz coach thinking, killer? Seriously?! That just cost me 6 points and I'd be in second place (pripple is the only person ahead of me to have Jaedong)

3) Did you get tired of losing and decided to rig this season to your own benefit?

4) Whats your goal this season?

Well with almost 2000 teams(!!) this time I would be happy with a top 100 finish although I really want top 10 :D

5) Any trade secrets you are thinking of?

Make sure to check the lineups before you trade, no sense trading for someone who won't even play that week. Trading really builds off itself since if you're making good trades you're going to be able to get players with higher trade values each week so making some good choices in your initial picks is key; someone like Hiya who only cost 2 points but went 2-0 this week is a very good start (his trade value is up to 3.17). Remember that its easier for the cheaper players to jump up since they don't require the constant point generation to maintain their current rank.

It's on that note that we close today. The league opened with a bang this week, and as we head into another bout of games tomorrow, we can only hope that things are just going to get better and better. We had some surprises this week, and as the individual leagues get going and players face competition from all sides, we know that weirder things are just bound to happen. Thus, whether you're following game by game or just drop by once in a while to see what's what, be sure to catch us next week with another PL update. Till next time then, good luck and good games!

This Proleague update was brought to you by Team Liquid's PL 2009-10 coverage team - riptide, heyoka, pangshai and zulu_nation8. Thanks to keit as usual for the stellar graphics, and pachi for the FPL update!

God I hate Oz, even when I bet on them. You have a choice for an Ace match, which the opposite teams best player is a Zerg. You are now faced with a choice play Jaedong with a nearly 80% winning percentage in ZvZ in over 100 games and he kicks ass in every other match up OR! Killer, who sucks.

Choice B seemed like the logical decision.

Having priorly started an armory, this could only mean valkyries, and true enough, when Luxury's mutas arrived at his main, 3 valkyries turned them away easily.

hey wasnt it wraiths?!?!?!
