Upcoming Lans:

Quilifiers for Geex (#2 online qualifier will be Saturday, September 24, 2011 sign ups) CHECK-IN WILL BEGIN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 AT 11:00 A.M. MDT AND WILL CLOSE FRIDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT
+ Show Spoiler +

After months of anticipation, GEEX (Gaming and Electronics Expo) is proud to now have officially announced their Starcraft 2 tournament to be held at their expo on October 14-15, 2011.

GEEX is available to anyone and everyone that can make it to the event. Qualifier Tournaments are available to anyone as long as they are available to make it to the finals October 14-15, 2011 should they win any of the 4 Qualifier Tournaments.

Registration is Live

There is a detailed explanation of tournament rules/formats/etc at GEEX's Tournament Page. Here is a summary:

Top 8 players from qualifier events will play LIVE at GEEX. Where will these qualifiers be and how can you join?

Qualifier #1:

Online, Bnet US Server, Saturday September 17, 2011. Check-in will occur at 16:00 GMT (+00:00) in the same place you registered
Start time: 17:00 GMT (+00:00)
Bnet channel: GEEX
Players will find their opponent and begin their matches according to the maps and rules laid out on GEEX's website
Players will report wins through the z33k tournament page and must upload their replays before beginning their next match
1st (and 2nd) place finisher secures a spot in the Final 8 to be played at GEEX
Because this is an online event, we will be contacting 1st (and 2nd) place finisher and ensuring that they will be at the event. In the case that 1st (or 2nd) place does not show up at GEEX, his/her spot will default to 3rd/4th (and continue down the line if necessary).

Qualifier #2:
Online Qualifier #2 is now open for sign ups. Online Qualifier #2 will be Saturday, September 24, 2011. Start time is 11:00 a.m.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CHECK-IN TIMES HAVE CHANGED. CHECK-IN WILL BEGIN FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 AT 11:00 A.M. MDT AND WILL CLOSE FRIDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT.
We have done this to allow us enough time to seed the players. If, for whatever reason, you can't check-in during this time, we will make an exception and allow you to check-in Saturday morning. But, PLEASE, do all that you can to check-in Friday so we can start the tournament on time. Check-in's will occur through the tournament page on z33k. All players are to meet in the battle net channel GEEX to find their opponents.

The top 2 players will qualify for spots #3 and #4 at GEEX.

John Sloan, one of the main guys at GEEX, told the chat channel at the Online Qualifier #1 that they are working on grand prizes with PC Laptops and wellplayed.org. It's going to be the biggest prize ever to be given at any Utah Starcraft 2 tournament. So, let's get more than 25 players showing up to this qualifier. Spread the word!!!

Qualifier #3:
To be held at Neumont University at a date yet to be announced. Stay tuned for further information.
Top 3 finishers secure a spot in the Final 8 to be played at GEEX

FINAL 8:
October 15 at South Towne Expo Center
Tournament rules can be found on GEEX's website

Well, you may all be wondering now, "What am I playing for?" GEEX will be announcing the prizes in the near future. I will be sure to let everyone know the second I find out for sure what the prizes are. But, believe me, this is going to be the BIGGEST gaming event in Utah.

Help support GEEX by purchasing tickets HERE. Spread the word to all your gaming and electronic friends!

Starcraft Utah's 1st BYOC Tournament Saturday, May 7th @ 12:00 @ Neumont
+ Show Spoiler +
It is my pleasure to announce Starcraft Utah's 1st Official BYOC Tournament! We here at Starcraft Utah want to provide you with the quality of tournaments you all deserve.[image loading]
I really wish I could express just how important this tournament is for sponsorship. The guys over at GeekBox Computers have been really good about working with us and helping us to get great prizes. They just need to know how many people are expected to attend this event. If we present a good showing (at least 50 people), I really think GeekBox Computers will help us out. They have good connections with companies such as NVIDIA and Razer. So please, go SIGN UP HERE so we can give our sponsors a list of people in attendance. Again, I can't express the importance of this tournament as it will set the bar for prizes and sponsorship for future tournaments.

What: 1v1 Double Elimination BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) Tournament

Where: Neumont University, 10701 South River Front Parkway, 2nd Floor South Jordan, UT

When: Saturday May 7, 2011. Registration starts at 12:00 p.m., Tournament starts at 1:00 p.m.

Cost: $5 per person. Entry fee will cover cost for prizes & pizza! Other food will be provided by Neumont University at your own expense.

Questions: starcraftutah@gmail.com

Tournament hosts: Sonde, Tear, Ignite - Feel free to ask us questions or offer suggestions!

A special THANKS to GeekBox Computers for helping us out so much. Also, we are hoping to get some giveaway items from GEEXas well.

So please, sign up as soon as you can. This is somewhat short notice (2 weeks), but with good attendance and the quality of games previously provided in other tournaments, I have hopes that this will spark the interest of sponsors.

UPDATE: GeekBox has confirmed that it will help sponsor this tournament

I'm either going to donate a bit of money to the prize pool for this tourney, or possibly just put up some for another tourney. $2 fee to go and $3 for the tourney... that confuses me a little bit, $2 to be a spectator? That's kind of odd if you don't get anything but the games for that money. If I did a tourney I would do something like $5 BYOC includes pizza/drinks and the rest of the money goes to a prize pool or something like that. Maybe more than $5 if you don't think it'll be enough to cover (little caesars and 12 packs of shasta are cheap )

GeekBox guys are the shit. Seriously. I will do everything I can to make this.
Just to give you guys an idea how sick they are as sponsors my friends and I EACH won PCs worth almost $2k for winning the MW2 tournament last year.
They are serious about helping and building the local gaming community. Most, if not all, are gamers and have gamer mentalities when it comes to most topics. They are very fair, open, and respectful. I advise you to be the same to them and it will always be a great experience for everyone.

Hey everyone! I had no idea that Utah had it's own SC2 community that is actively engaged in tournaments etc. I'm just here to announce that I'll be participating in this future tournaments as much as possible. I'm a part of VP, and plan on representing them in Utah (since I am the highest ranked player from Utah in VP) and plan on bringing a few other masters level players along with me.

We're ready to make a splash in Utah!

If I can find a way to come I will. The BYOC is gonna be a pain though. I worry that will keep people from coming. Personally I think it would have been better to have your first Geekbox sponsored tourney not be BYOC just cuz I would think you would get more people.

If you can find a venue that doesn't charge $20 for a tournament with prizes and giveaways then please let me know. Oh, yeah, and it must be able to hold over 50 people and accomodate casters and an audience. Sure, an online tournament is an option, but there's nothing like spending a Saturday playing SC2 with like-minded people and eating pizza. Seriously if you can find a venue that has computers and will let you play for a small fee that includes pizza and drinks let me know. I will gladly host my next tournament there. I've spent the last 6 months trying to find such a place.

The only labs I've been in at the U have been in the engineering buildings. Although they may have enough computers, there is no room for spectators nor an area for casting w/o having all the players hear. In addition, the majority of Utah's players live either near the U or BYU. Being that the U favors Salt Lake more than Provo, tournaments up there don't produce as many people. Same goes with Versus down south - most players that attend are from around there. Versus is a nice venue because they have 50 computers and a spectating area - unfortunately though, they charge $20/person.

I'm definitely not opposed to a non-BYOC tournament and I will look into the U computer labs more in depth. Any more places a little more centrally located to balance the commute for both Salt Lake and Utah Counties?

Well Neumont would be fine, but I find it hard to believe that they don't have a computer lab that we could use...? I would just figure a school that does "Game design" would have computers that could play games on them

Sorry I wasn't trying to complain, I was just expressing my concern that there are sponsors and I was worried about the BYOC thing scaring people off. I know I am hesitant to come because my tower is HUGE and I have a 32" monitor so between the two its a giant headache to move.

Oh and I thought I would ask here since I didn't get a response on the blog, but if I'm not able to make it what is the URL for the stream that the casters will be using? It would be nice to watch some games if I can't come.

I agree that BYOC's aren't the greatest, but for now it's the best/cheapest thing we can do. There are quite a few people though that play on laptops, I was surprised at the last Neumont tournament. As far as the stream goes, Tear and Sonde will be broadcasting on justin.tv/tear388

Their computer labs consist of about 5 to 10 computers and that's it and they're in fairly small rooms (definitely not big enough to handle 50+ players and spectators). Their "Game Design" classes are offered like once every two or four years I think. I believe it's mainly a computer programming/technical school and so most of the students have their own laptops.

I still find it hard to believe that a computer school does not have a full lab :\ There is something hugely wrong with that to me.

Oh, thought i'd add this, since I haven't seen it posted here yet, Geex is adding $150 for prize money, plus giving out some of their sweet tshirts

Any complaints about it being a BYOC should be null with that kinda money involved ;D

Yeah, having a huge rig is a pain for BYOC stuff, but there is nothing quite like playing on your own system. I just feel "at home" wherever I am if I'm on my own rig. I feel like I play better, but I could just be crazy.

Well it sounds like they already have 2 casters for this event so I'm guessing they don't need a 3rd. If I understand correctly it looks like you have 3 guys that manage these tourneys for both SLC and Provo? If so do all 3 of you monitor this thread? I just want to offer to help out with casting if you guys ever need it. I know I had read for the Provo tourney that some people weren't happy with the casting so I'd be glad to help the current caster if he needs a co-caster. I won't go over my resume here, but I have a lot of experience and access to a featured teamliquid.net stream.

Ok I'm having a super crappy night. I've been working on my computer all night trying to figure out the cause of a problem I'm having and think it may be my video card. I need to know how soon I can show up to this event and at what point I would have internet. The reason is the video card I need is at Best Buy in West Jordan and I don't want to drive all the way down there then all the way back to Farmington to install and trouble shoot then drive back down again. I'd like to come down and buy it then come over to the event and work on my computer if thats ok. If not I probably won't be coming.

Well registration there starts at 12, so i'm sure people will be there before that. If it IS the video card that's causing problems I don't see it taking over an hour to do anyways, so if you are there by noon you should be ok. And if it's not working in time I'm sure something can be worked out as far as using somebody else's PC.

LAN was fantastic! A little long, but fantastic! Congrats to NadaViking for 1st, Pit for 2nd, and Amandil for 3rd.
prizes were like $145 for first + $120 video card, $57 for 2nd + $75 video card, and $22 for 3rd + $75 video card.
Lots of prizes and free stuff provided by the sponsors (Geex, Geekbox computers)

So this event was huge! Like 60+ people and it ran pretty smoothly

I am one of the people in Panda's group. If you would like to go but aren't sure if you have transportation we might be able to work something out. A lot of us work together at the same warehouse, but we live all around the valley. It may turn out one of us is your neighbor and we weren't aware
I am out of town at the moment but will be back at the start of next week. I would love to get a bigger community feeling in our games and events. If you know other people in our area who play have em join our group on facebook as well. Crazed Pandas (named after our fearless leader). WE ARE NOT A CLAN OR official TEAM. Merely a group of friends who love Starcraft and for the most part live in Utah!
Also add me to the rankings, I need to get Masters in 1v1 here soon. Jukijuice.590

Hey everyone! We have finalized all the details for the tournament on July 18th at GamerzFunk in Taylorsville.
Swiss Golden Panda Open!
Please sign up there. The more people we have the better this event will be. This is a really low key and low skill level tournament so everyone is invited. We originally had it set to not invite Grand masters but figured it would be alright and that we probably wouldn't win if they came. We just want to create a great event for the Starcraft 2 community in Utah to meet new people and have a great time so please sign up!

I'll be there for sure StuBob! I'm excited and it should be sweet. I'm not sure how the prizes will be distributed with as many games as they are anticipating. But, they have said that there will be an SC2 tournament (as well as other games like LoL, Brawl, Magic: The Gathering, Poker, Fifa, and who knows what else). Hope you all can attend, it's free with free food! Doesn't get much better than this!

Also, I just wanted to say sorry to those that attended the GamerzFunk tournament because I failed to announce it on the blog. I intended to announce it but just got caught up with real life stuff (stupid real life). Anyway, my apologies to the host of that tourney.

Hey Toyomaha no worries about the GamerzFunk tournament. It went well! We had around 13 people there and did a double elimination tournament. The results are on the thread posted about it above.

We want to do more but realize that high entry fees aren't good and the venue was the reason for our higher entry fee.

Yeah we looked at doing tournaments there but due to their hourly rates and limited amount of computers we figured we wouldn't get the turnout we wanted. Glad to hear it went well though! Hope to see everyone at Nerdapalooza.

I felt that the LAN wasn't very well conceived. They needed their events to begin sooner to keep people's interest and the whole "cash-in, cash-out" thing was a huge bummer.

The tournament was complete shit. sorry.

I loved meeting all the guys that play being my first time playing with the Utah scene.

It started to damn late.
My computer lost power twice and the internet shit on me once. I didnt lose the games but I lost the time to even make some damn points to play.

I dont think the host took into consideration that some games took over 45 mins. just my last game with looke took at least that long and with all the power outs, it messed everything up for everyone.

in the 6 hours of being there, i literally only played 6 games. And 4 of those werent more than 12 minute games.

I'm fairly limited to downtown/Sugar House area, or outside that something really light-rail accessible, but I'd love to come to a Barcraft and have a few.

I honestly think Barcraft at somewhere not a bar (like The Pie or something similar) would be the best choice, because they still have beers and what not, but it would also allow people under 21 to enjoy the event. Pizza, beer, friends, SC2 on TVs.... what's not to love?

I will look into the Pie as well. I think that would be the best seeing how we can then get people under 21 in there. So I will be working on this over the next month, on my days off.

Are we talking like a buy in or something? Paying just to be there to watch? Or paying for drinks/food?

Zero dollars, to be honest. I'm happy to drop like $20 on food and drinks, but sports bars aren't supposed to have covers.

Yea I agree. I will definitely drop $20 on food and drinks, but never on a cover fee to watch SC2 lol. I mean I have a gold membership for MLG which we can use to watch the HD streams, so why would I also want to pay just to be there? That would be money to get in, plus money on food and drinks, so any cover charge would be silly.

I'd definitely go down to brewvies if it was going on there... Not sure how much I'd pay though since just 3 or 4 beers and sandwich would end up being a wad of cash on its own.

If there's a "Barcraft" anywhere in SL, I'll be there with at least 2 friends.

Just FYI, GEEX will be having their annual expo the weekend of MLG Orlando (October 14-15). Check out www.geexshow.com for more details (once they update their site).
Starcraft Utah (the same guys that did the Neumont tournament back in May) will be running their SC2 qualifiers before and during the event. Announcements will be made very soon. There will be 2 qualifiers before GEEX and 1 on Friday at GEEX. Then the top 8 from these qualifiers will play on Saturday for the main prize (to be announced, but it is sponsored by PC Laptops). Also, these top 8 will be playing on the main stage at GEEX.
So, if you're wanting to do a barcraft, I'd suggest doing it another weekend besides MLG Orlando only because there is going to be a huge SC2 tournament at GEEX.

I contacted the GEEX folks earlier to see if they would be streaming the MLG games. They responded that they had a partnership with WorthPlaying.com and would be streaming MLG while GEEX is going on. So there's that.

Be glad to attend a barcraft if a sympathetic location could be found. Any updates to that?

I was checking the rules and it asks to post your replay win to Z33k.com. How the hell do you do that? I was checking and theres nothing to upload to your account or anything like that

ContactKilla,

To upload your replay, find your self on the bracket, click on your name to get to the match page, and if you're logged in you should see an option to report your match.

There are also other ways to get to the match page, but this is one popular method. PM me here or go to #z33k on irc.gamesurge.net if you need more technical help.

Best,
Fletch

Oblong & Pride take top 2 spots for GEEX!

Congratulations to both of them for fighting their way through the brackets and coming out on top. They have secured their spots in the final 8 to be played live at GEEX.

Next online qualifier will be Saturday, September 24, 2011. We apologize for the late start today, seeding the brackets is not the easiest on z33k.com. Thank you all for your patience and to those that participated in this tournament.

Calm down kid, everything is going to be just fine. Tournaments will try to start at around 6... maybe 6:15 at the latest, doors open at 5 so people have time to get there and setup.

Ok, so I have been away for 2+ years, but now I am back and can update this thread. There is a new starcraft tournament at UofU! I looked for another sc2 utah thread, and couldn't find one, so instead of making another one, Ill just use this one.

Pre regester only;
