Don't post in this thread to say "gay gamers are like everyone else, why do they have a special thread?" It is something that has been posted numerous times, and this isn't the place for that discussion.
For regular posters, don't quote the trolls. |
On July 12 2011 16:20 Chopin- wrote: Just curious, this question goes to everyone regardless of sexual orientation:
Have you experienced any (or a lot of) homophobic slurs used as smack talking in SC2 games? I've definitely come across quite a bit with my teammate saying the usual "gl hf" in the beginning to be responded to by "f--k you f----ts" or things of a similar nature. Was just curious if this is more a current generation thing or if it was also prevalent in SC1 days (I only played against AI or custom games in SC1) and if you experience this in a bunch of other games. I know it's quite prevalent in FPS.
I played a 2v2 last night with a friend, where I was just so angered by the crazy smack talking that when our opponents asked us what league we were in, I said "rainbow league" and one opponent was like "great we're playing with f----ts" and I continued not to back down from then on as they asked if I was gay, and I said "very." Needless to say, I really wanted to kick their butts from that moment on and luckily we were victorious. I saved the replay as "pwning homophobes".
Hahah, awesome. Pwning homophobes is something we should all do, every day, in every walk of life. It's not hard, since they have very little substance, but each walkover is a victory for the gays and a victory for freedom, for everyone.
Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway, I'm not sure if you're just referring to how anything to do with gay has been tacked onto the current English slang for "bad". "That's gay" or "faggot" or "queer" in most cases has got very little to do with being gay these days. It's just become synonymous with something bad.
I mean, when someone calls you faggot over the internet, unless you have actually said something that indicates that you're gay, they don't really think you are gay, they are just saying it because it sounds bad.
If this IS in fact what you are referring to, no, it's not new, it's been around for a couple of years. I don't know where it rooted from (the internet or high schools) but either way, it's definitely been around for a while. I would imagine that it originated from insecurity regarding sexuality in teenage boys resulting in it becoming an insult and now it's slunk its way into everyday language.
Most important thing to remember about it is that 90% of the time, it's got nothing to do with actual homosexuality. Everything becomes "gay".
Personally, I think I and most people are less worried about it than we should be, but to be honest, it crept in and now people just say it. My friends say it and it's even slipped out of my mouth a couple of times. Using our sexuality for words that synonymous with bad or undesirable is not exactly ideal when in a world when plenty of gays are still fighting for rights but what can you do?
Edit!
Actually, there is something you can do. I was just rethinking my post. If every gay has a couple of friends that he/she stops from using "gay" as their word of choice for bad, it would mean at least a good number of people. You could even do community drives - maybe starting with Team Liquid. But it would require initiative.

Ima risk a ban here. The op proves hes just an attention whore faggot with his first post. The internet is a beautifull place cuz no one knows anyone who they really is. Theres no kind of discrimination unless you draw attention to yourself being a faggot as you are. Theres exp no place for "do i get aroused by dicks" in a fucking video game. I dont care if you are a chink, a wigga, a girl or a faggot in sc2. All i care about is ur goddam race ingame and the map we gona play on + the "favored" sign above ur head. This is also relevent as i just found out that my practice partner is a girl and she whooped my ass too many times. This kinda demolishes my male ego, but havent changed the way i talk to her or whatever. Genders and sexual orientations are pointless in a video game. Go fucking host a dating site but fuck off off tl please or ill start a thread "straight men looking for straight hawt bitches playing sc2" .

You RISKING a ban?
No no no sir.
You are DEMANDING a ban.
To be honest, I would agree with you if it wasn't for the insanely flawed way you posted. I do agree that there's no need for threads like this, gamers are gamers, it doesn't matter what orientation you are. However, you're evidently homophobic, immature, and generally stupid, so have fun being banned.

You are correct to a certain extent. This is posted under the proper category "TL Community". This obviously pertains to the community, not just the game itself. Instead of letting all that hate build up inside you while you come up with your racist slurs and ugly jargon, you should actually try to think before you post.
Have fun with your ban, you're lucky you're behind the Internet wall.

Mora, you should write a book about your thoughts and experiences, through an autobiography or an allegory of some sort. There are many many many gay people in this world that need psychological support.

Gamers are gamers, but this is a community. Why shouldn't we be able to discuss sexual orientation as a community? There is more to this community than just Starcraft.
Look at all of the hobby threads/area threads on this site. You don't go onto the cooking/weightlifting thread and hate on them because they aren't talking about Starcraft. They are talking about themselves to the rest of the community. Yet you get people coming onto this thread and being obscenely homophobic, in what is supposed to be a tolerant community. It's shocking.
I'm beginning to think this thread might get closed, just because every now and then it just gets revived by some disgusting comment. I don't want it to though. Gay starcrafters representin'.

I agree with his point wholeheartedly but the way he went about saying it.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't expect people to read the whole thread before posting in it, but at least read the OP. Mora explains explicitly why you might think such a thread is not warranted when in fact, it actually is. If you UNDERSTAND that and don't agree with it then go away. This thread has been validated a number of times in past posts. The very fact that this thread has reached this age is testament to it's contribution. So please...
Edit: Haha, actually just thinking, the mods must be like "uh-oh, there it goes again" whenever this thread pops into the quick links under TL community, because it will undoubtedly draw the attention of some 3 brain-celled bigot like the one above.

what are the general attitudes towards those who politely disagree with homosexuality but still treat you without discriminating?

How do you disagree with homosexuality? It is not a opinion. If you think one might disagree with heterosexuality also, then I guess I politly think that it is kind of retarded but wouldn't discriminate.

Haha what awesome timing. There was that PSA with Hilary Duff to stop people from using gay as a bad connotation. I don't know if that really helped us that much lol. But I agree, I think it's more about doing your part to change people's minds by just being who you are or being a positive image of homosexuality that a lot of people don't have in their lives. I've been a lot of people's first (openly) gay person they've met. One of my friend's parents (conservative from China) thought that homosexuality didn't exist in Chinese people and was just a foreign thing and when my friend told them that I was gay, it surprised them. But now I've heard they've asked consistently how I've been doing and if I have a boyfriend yet. Very meaningful victory for me.
And RE: Uzsibox.. wow. I mean I also envision a society where this will be a non-issue as in it would be seen as normal or common to be gay in high school or have two gay parents etc. We're not there yet but with every generation comes more understanding. I really do believe that once more and more states have gay marriage accepted, people will just see homosexuality as common and a non-issue, hatred will be less taught to kids or kids will be more receptive to form opinions on their own if it's more viewable.
But in the realm of sports, jobs, etc. of course there shouldn't be an issue. When Willie Mays was asked if the MLB was ready for an openly gay player, he asked "Can he hit?" It's good to know in the professional realm that there are consequences for using the f-word (Kobe and Joakim in the NBA).

Love how people get mad at a gay thread for gays just wanting to find gays
but when a girl thread (Facebook group) is made looking for girls then its the opposite.
You guys crack me up - And to comment on using the term faggot on the internet? Let me tell you that of all of those I knew and know those who expresses their feelings using those sort of words are in nearly every instance an idiot/inescure/asshole or just is in someway not a nice guy.
While those who doesn't use such remarks are all good people who I truly respect as a person, not because they don't say faggot and gay cocksucker, but more because there is in my observation a correlation with idiocy and people saying cocksucker/fag - and - vice versa.
If you use racist remarks or speak condescendingly then the internet is no place for you. It has never been nor will it ever be.

Well, to be fair, I think I've had more gay friends call me a faggot than straight people. Something to do with drinking appletinis and tequila sunrises. My wife also calls me gay occasionally, but that's usually when she catches me listening to Rhianna, Britney, or Katy Perry...
Why exactly can't I drink an appletini and listen to Rhianna?
Edit: Note, I just realized how much like a troll this sounds, I'm actually being serious though.

That does sound a bit different from the internet I'm using...

This thread makes me sad because of all the unfair discrimination that gay people get, some of the most interesting people I enjoy talking to are gay, but other than that, they're just perfectly normal people. People are missing out!
I unno if anyone in this thread would like to add me since I'm just a girl, but yeah I'm looking forward to meeting more new people, message me if you guys are interested in playing
