FWIW while there is correlation to a genetic component to homosexuality, it's by no means definitive. Arguments have been made for environment within the uterus playing a part (among other things). The reason why the "born gay" movement started was in response to the Religious Right assertion that homosexuality is a "choice." The problem of course is that no one ever wakes up and consciously thinks: "I'm going to be straight/gay/bi/etc." So it was the best way of saying, "Being gay/bi/etc. is an inherent part of who I am that I had no active choice is; I can no more choose to be straight than I can choose to be a T-rex." The science on the nature vs nurture effect on sexuality is still inconclusive (last I knew). I think the problem with "growing into homosexuality" from an ideological argument is that, presuming homosexuality is morally wrong, there are factors which could be controlled to prevent this "moral wrongness" from happening. So when that's likely why most people would identify as being "born gay" (even if it's a subconscious choice). Overall, the argument is pretty stupid because the "born gay" counter-argument should be, "Fuck you and your fucking nut job belief that homosexuality is wrong; even if it is a choice it's a perfectly valid choice to make."

I'm of the opinion that homosexuality is not a choice but on the other hand saying you were "born gay" doesn't seem accurate either. The former because I don't recall the moment when I "chose" to be gay and I'm pretty sure no heterosexual person would be able to tell me when they chose be straight either. Also it would be a pretty bad decision considering it amounts to painting a giant bulls-eye on your back, leads to many awkward situations (repeatedly having to come out for one) and that you're effectively shrinking your dating pool by (approximately) between 80% and 90%.

The reason I say the phrase "born gay" isn't accurate either is that though I'm no expert in child development I highly doubt people start experiencing sexual attraction before the onset of puberty. However, I suspect people using this phrase might rather be trying to more compactly express that they are "naturally gay" as opposed to being gay due to learned behaviour or being influenced/shaped by past experiences.

I would also say sexuality is merely a preference or a taste - nothing more, nothing less. To me being attracted to guys rather than girls is the same as my preference for coffee over tea. There is no rhyme or reason why I prefer coffee over tea and in the same way there is no extrinsic reason for my homosexuality. If you'd rather compare it to some other human characteristic, as opposed to taste in beverages, then I'm certain you wouldn't find it strange that someone prefers brunettes over blondes (or vice versa) for no reason other than just liking one more than the other. Why would sexuality be any different?

Damn, well at first I saw the thread title and had the obvious reaction you cited at the beginning. After reading further I have to say that if you find people to connect with that share the same hobbies and are also gay, then more power to you. If that provides solace, comfort, camaraderie, then that's a beautiful thing. I know it's not my fault, but I'm sorry society is so fucked up that it's a big deal what you like to do with your penis. With the fuck heads that are running this country (and voting for them across the midwest retard-belt), it's more important now than it has even been to band together and show support, particularly since it may mean even more challenging times for many. Keep fighting the good fight...interesting perspective on the whole thing that I'd never thought of before. At some point, the old world thinking will die, but it seems like it has to fester and rise to the surface first, before it pops, like a nasty pimple (Ok, yeah, fucking gross analogy but you get it).
