Don't post in this thread to say "gay gamers are like everyone else, why do they have a special thread?" It is something that has been posted numerous times, and this isn't the place for that discussion.
For regular posters, don't quote the trolls. |
I too have seen this theory. This effect possibly comes from hormonal environment within the uterus. It's not entirely clear how this works, but hormonal environment can have effects on brain development. For example, exposing a fetus to a certain hormone at a certain time or depriving it of a hormone at a certain time may have effects on many things, including brain structure. Neurologists see differences in areas of the brains of gay people vs. straight people. If the uterus has carried multiple male fetuses in the past, I guess there could be some mechanism that alters the environment in the uterus somehow.
I don't think anybody really knows how this is supposed to work, but I did find a couple articles. One is just a Scientific American article with limited info, but it gives kind of an overview. I can also link more specific scientific papers if anybody cares about the different hypothalamus sizes lol. Also, I'm the older of two brothers, so I don't really fit the data
Edit: Link!

I've heard of this theory/hypothesis:
So apparently there are 3 waves of hormones in the uterus that dictate gendered development. The first one determines the brain sex. This is simply whether the developing fetus has a male or female brain. The second wave of hormones detemrines sexuality. And the third takes care of sex characteristics of the rest of the body.
In msot cases they all line up and you get a straight, cisgendered male or female but you can mix and match. You can get transmen who are into women, transwomen who are into women, men who are into men and all sorts of variations.

This is the preferred belief with the most evidence supportin'. Unfortunately its a bit hard to pin down an exact answer.

Just to throw it out there, I'm gay and I am the eldest child in the family, and I have a heterosexual little brother.

It really doesn't work as well you'd think. My brother and I are very similar; he turned out gay, and despite a lot of people thinking I'm gay (I'm very shameless and talkative), I'm not at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraternal_birth_order_and_sexual_orientationIs it your younger brother?
Of course With a sister in between, and a single mother.

not being funny but why do homosexuals get a thread dedicated to them, can i make a straight players thread?, you dont see these things cause no one really cares. so what if your gay, straight , black or white, muslim , buddhist or a christian , this is just another gay promotion thread. if i opend a thread for straight players or muslim players i doubt it would be open very long before its locked.

I think the important thing about the various theories for the reasoning behind sexuality is that they're not inclusive, we're just learning about the factors that can affect orientation.

we're a community of starcraft players from various walks of life who happen to be gay and wish to network and play starcraft with fellow gay gamers. we're just a fun bunch of gals who are more interested in getting together for fun games rather than hitting up clubs or other gay past time activities
that said...

Be careful, i have been banned for that, apparently people does not like we have a different opinion there. Making muslim/christian/jewish/straights/mormons/black/asian/white threads is strictly the same thing.
Even a tard could understand that, that does not mean we are homophopic or something like that.

Ok, I'll take a crack at explaining the whole "why do gay players have their own thread" question. I realize these assholes are mostly trolling, but I actually get asked similar questions in real life ("why do gays have their own bars" etc...), and I think this is based in a fundamental misunderstanding of what the consequences of being gay actually are.
To put this in a straight perspective: Imagine you saw no women ever. You hear they exist and you can see them on the internet, but you haven't actually hung out with any. Everybody at work is a guy, everybody at restaurants and bars is a guy, every single person you see every day is a guy. To make things even tougher, all the guys date each other, and if they ever found out you like girls they would socially destroy you. You have to go through life watching everybody you know hook up, have relationships, dates, flirting and all around enjoying themselves while you can't participate in any of that because you don't like guys. You can't even escape it on TV or movies; every show is about two guys, all the products advertised on television are aimed at men trying to attract other men. The problem becomes, even after you get over the fear of social exile and tell people you know that you like girls, it doesn't fix your situation. You still have no way to meet them or find them in any way. They are an invisible part of the population. If you are lucky enough to meet one, what do you think the odds are that she is both attractive and attracted to you? Well, that's why there's a thread for you on TL to find other people with the same sexuality and at least one interest in common! Lucky you!
It may not seem like a life-ruining scenario, but when you have to deal with this reality every single day it gets real fucking old real fucking fast; trust me, I'm only 23 but I reached a point in my life where there was no more reason to get out of bed any day of the week because I was fundamentally different from everybody else and there was no way to change it. My basic point is that sexuality is unlike religion or race to the extent that you can't actually exist effectively in a world where your everyday socialization is so hindered.
Troll away if you must, but my answer is just in case anybody comes here actually looking for a serious answer to that question.
