Hello all.
Using a LG l19WT-SF (Flatron)
My monitor has been bugging me for about 3 days now
It started started off with a very high frequency whine which would eventually stop about 10-15 minutes after turning the monitor on.
So i figured that a capacitator must have gone / is in the process of going. No biggie.
Then i started noticing that the monitor would fade to black before its 'inactivity period is up' this happened once or twice, so i put it down to randomness and ignored it.
Also note that there is a very faint electrical burning smell that permeates my room - my nose led me to the back of the monitor where it was strongest. Googled it and apparently it can be common with some LCDs - ok so ignored that too.
Fast forward to earlier today:
Screen starts flickering during final mission of HOTS campaign - FU.
Stop the game and look behind monitor to see a plume of white smoke, and a series of tiny fireworks shooting off inside the back panel. da fuq?
Aside from the flickering - still works fine, turns on / off on problem.
Now my room stinks of this electrical burning smell.
was just posting to ask you guys: Do i need a need a new monitor or should i just keep using my current one, and would it have damaged my gfx card / mobo in anyway? also is the power supply cable to monitor still good? or the cable that connects the monitor to the gfx card?
Any help would be much appreciated
TL:DR: Monitor started emitting white smoke. Electrial sparks / fireworks in back panel during the smoke. Stinks like burning.
DO i need a new monitor? are my cables compromised? can my gfx card / mobo be fucked?

Plug out the monitor now, risk of fire present.

Replace it.
If something is shorting inside the monitor, then the only option is to replace it. I doubt it will have done anything bad to the GFX card / cables and connectors (maybe the monitor cable).
How old is it (the monitor)? Normally, if it's a safety issue (which fire and smoke is) manufacturers and retailers won't quibble about replacements. Even if the warranty is up you could give it a shot!
Also what Cokefreak said, definately unplug it, setting your house on fire isn't worth it for finishing a game!

Yeah i unplugged it after i noticed the sparks etc.

7 years old - manufactured 2006 so prolly wont be getting anything out from LG lol. I guess it was time for an upgrade anyway.
Also would you advise me to not use any of the old cables associated with this monitor?

You can try the new cables, if they don't work they're damaged but they certainly shouldn't affect the new monitor at all.

Lol i know, kind of a dumb question, but it was functioning normally - if you ignore the ocassional flicker, the smoke, burning, and occasional spark haha. No but in all seriousness im more interested to know about my cables / mobo /card

There are some electronics in a monitor that can definitely fail in the way you're describing, and that's not a good thing obviously. You should stop using it.
For one, there's an AC -> DC power supply inside. You don't want mains ~110V power running through faulty electronics. Sure, there could be a fuse or other protections and you've got a circuit breaker, but it's not like they'd stop everything and you don't want to get to that point anyway.
Power supply cable to monitor is very most likely fine. Video card and video cable are most likely fine.

Yeah, 7 years may be pushing it!
If you get a new monitor, it's likely that you'll get new cables and stuff anyhow so it's probably safest to just swap the lot over.
That said, it's pretty hard for the cable to cause that sort of bad business - more like Myrmidon indicated, a transformer or something similar inside has given up the ghost.
Look on the bright side, shiney new monitor time!

But seriously, buy a new monitor, what the first men says, risk of fire, don't use it or don't leave it on when your gone.....
