Hahaha, that's an interesting idea. Or maybe all 5 colors ^__^
blue black red brown and clear key caps, that would be annoying as fuck to type on.

Especially if you didn't mix caps, so it looked like a normal board, you could totally use it as the ultimate prank for co-workers and the likes.

I mentioned the idea to my wife, who's moderately OCD at times, and she told me if I did it to her, the only thing the keyboard would outlive would be me.

No shit I do, she can build a PC. Granted, she's more good with networking and dicking around with an OS, but that just makes our skillsets complementary.

Some pretty sick keyboards in here! Has anyone here bought keycaps from WASD to Sweden? Kinda wondering what the price ends up being after taxes and customs.

Quickfire rapid with blue/black (original keycaps) and the blue keys also have o-ring dampeners on them.

This is what a Model M looks like when you've removed the keycaps for cleaning (with a toothbrush and toothpaste, works amazing):

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

If you don't put the keycaps on, you have an otaku M. :p It actually made me type faster but I gave up on it after a while.

Also had a project with inserting Model M springs in an IBM rubber board that had a tube underneath each keycap in which you could actually fit a spring before reinstalling the key. It was basically a rubber dome with a spring inside the key (between the tip of the rubber and whatever was supposed to poke it). It had a very low travelling distance, like poke the key and it's pressed. A very interesting blend of soft and springy, a bit like a linear switch mech board but more interesting. A bit of a poor man's Topre. Should go back to it one day.

Yeah, I have one of the newer Unicomp Model Ms and sometimes I like the feel of it with the caps pulled off as well. Overall though, I prefer it with the caps on.

Hey guys, I was wondering where do you get keycaps? I really wanna customize my blackwidow ultimate! With terran protoss zerg key caps, and pure while keys with nothing on them! anyone know where I can get them? I'm from Canada and can't find a place, so possibly online. please hit me with a PM. Thanks guys!

I don't really like my BW ultimate, so if anyone can tell me where I can get a filco Cherry MX blue that would be awesome! Hopefully in a store in Canada!

I personally want to buy White/Clear keycaps for my Ducky Shine, however I'm not sure if I should get white ones or clear ones. I want to go for a checkered look so I can get either transparent keycaps and let the white LED do the work or get white ABS keycaps. Any chance anyone can help me out and show me pictures of both?

Might always go to Geekhack.org (pretty much an entire community dedicated to keyobards) and look at either classifieds or bargains. Because yeah, there's an entire subforum there to share good bargains you've found but won't be pursuing yourself, so I guess it gives you some form of emotional conclusion if you share with others. Classifieds is buying from other members. Then there are group guys, which is basically collective bargaining with the manufacturer. Because yeah, nerds do just that.

For the record, Filco and Leopold were designed by the same dude. He himself says Leopolds are better. Leopolds might also actually be cheaper than Filcos. For the record, I have a blue tenkeyless Filco. While good and all, it's not really the emperor of keyboards. In other words, don't be too set on it, don't promise yourself exceedingly much. It's decent, it has a heavy plate, is reasonably sturdy and non-wobbly, tenkeyless is cool but:

- cable is not detachable (cheap);
- key-caps are pad printed (cheapest method; you can feel the protrusion under your fingers).

For the record, Cherry Blues (sounds like a cocktail name... ) aren't the objectively ideal pinnacle of technology switch. Try other ones if you can. Just go and paw Steelseries 7G or 6GV2 or a TT e-sports Meka (all black) or Razer BW (blue unless the silent version, which is brown). Recently there have been some boards with red switches, which used to be very hard to find. I intend to take a look at them. Reds are linear and lighter than blacks. You don't get tacticle feedback but you don't get stopped for even a second, you can retap faster and I guess typing is cool on that one, despite what they say.

Note: If you have any form of RSI (repeat stress injury), CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) or stuff with your palms or fingers, you may really want to go for the lighter switches: brown (tactile) or red (linear). Especially if you type a lot. While blues are preferred by typists in general, browns are believed to be the most ergonomic of them all.

If you're at all uncertain about your preferences or your options or your knowledge, just go to Geekhack and make a thread. You'd be surprised how much people care (for the lost nublets as well; it's one of the friendliest communities ever). And the knowledge some of them have is mind-boggling.

I've owned both Filcos and Leopolds. For me the big win for the Filco over the Leo is that the larger keys (e.g., Backspace and Shift) feel like all the other keys. On the Leo they feel different, with a softer, mushier landing. This is not to say that the Leo feels bad, just that I prefer the Filco.

The detachable cable and better keycaps are nice wins for the Leo, but for me the whole point is the feel. The CM QuickFire and Rosewill are cheaper options that use the same key stabilizers as Filcos.

Switch choice is entirely subjective. Really. You gotta catch 'em all to know what is best for you, ultimately. There are switch test numpads and such on geekhack and deskthority that can help.

That's some important information to me actually. Thanks. I also tend to be annoyed by exceedingly heavy spacebars (I want space to have the same switch and everything else as the alpha section). Guess you've given me a new reason to be happy with my Filco.

The detachable cable and better keycaps are nice wins for the Leo, but for me the whole point is the feel. The CM QuickFire and Rosewill are cheaper options that use the same key stabilizers as Filcos.

Well, there are even reasons to prefer permanently fixed cables over modular solutions. To me it doesn't matter much, it's more like a token sign of cheap vs non-cheap constructions.

Switch choice is entirely subjective. Really. You gotta catch 'em all to know what is best for you, ultimately. There are switch test numpads and such on geekhack and deskthority that can help.

Yup. Except sometimes same switch feels different on different boards. (For the record, before buying a board, one'd better find out a bit about the casing etc., as well as typical reasons for user complaints, in order to avoid crap like a key colliding with the casing or some such. Or, as you said, mushy keys here or there involving not so great stabilisers.)

This is true -- but please search and read up before making a "what keyboard should I buy" post. ;P

Hehe. Well, there's a whole wiki anyway, so at least the theory and the specs can be read before! I hadn't, lol. I have yet to see a GH member not being happy to chime in and explain that blues are tactile and blacks are linear or what a rubber dome is.

If the same switch feels different on different board, it's not the switch, it's the key cap and the stabilizers. That's why you research what they are. If the key collides with the casing, then you just have a shitty keyboard. That's not a valid switch compliant. If a key is mushy, then it's a defective switch, not a valid switch complaint since it can occur anywhere. If the stabilizer is shitty, then the stabilizer is shitty, not a valid switch complaint because it's the manufacturer customized stabilizer, completely separate from the construction of the switch.

Mechanical switches are bought because they offer by far the most consistent typing experience until they break. They also guarantee that if you move across to different keyboards of the same construction, that experience will be exactly the same. Some people can prefer the feel of membranes versus mechanicals, but they cannot reasonably argue that all membrane keyboards all feel the same all the time. That right is exclusive to mechanical keyboards, of the same build.

Not 2-shot ... probably pad printed.

You can't deny that those are extremely good looking for pad print though.

Yes these are pad printed. Sadly, the D has slightly worn off now. Damn drones... gotta build more of them.

Of course that's not a valid switch complaint but I never said it was. All I'm saying is that the same switch inside the keys will not always result in the same overall feeling. In other words, there is more to a keyboard than the switches.

If a key is mushy, then it's a defective switch, not a valid switch complaint since it can occur anywhere. If the stabilizer is shitty, then the stabilizer is shitty, not a valid switch complaint because it's the manufacturer customized stabilizer, completely separate from the construction of the switch.

As above.

Mechanical switches are bought because they offer by far the most consistent typing experience until they break. They also guarantee that if you move across to different keyboards of the same construction, that experience will be exactly the same.

Except you don't have two keyboards of the same construction because as both you and I have said, there is more to a keyboard than the switches. So your bolded point is a fail. This not only because of bad solutions or failed designs but also legitimate design differences.

And there are plenty of reasons mechanical keyboards are bought, not only typing experience. Gaming keyboards based on black Cherries, while you can type on those and some people actually like typing with blacks, are not about typing. They are about tapping.

Some people can prefer the feel of membranes versus mechanicals, but they cannot reasonably argue that all membrane keyboards all feel the same all the time. That right is exclusive to mechanical keyboards, of the same build.

Which basically means the same manufacturer or a copied construction. Just like with rubber domes (membrane and rubber dome isn't exactly the same BTW), although not to that same extent. But if you took rubber domes of the same build they would feel similar every one to the others. So this is an illogical claim on your part.

<3 my ducky shine as well. As far as I know i don't think they make those at the moment. The key caps on the keyboard now are supposed to be some kind of double ABS key caps, lol whether the were made extra strong or not i don't know. I've looked at the construction of the current caps and it looks like it's just some white caps with a black paint on top of it. They probably laser etched the caps to show the letters. I also what to get some transparent-white caps. All of the solid keys that i have seen look to thick to let the light through. But what you could do, is since these are ABS keys you could remove the finish off the top of them and if you want letters either just paint the letters on yourself or you can find stickers of the letters. But I'm not sure how to do it safely. Per Wikipedia=

"ABS is derived from acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Acrylonitrile is a synthetic monomer produced from propylene and ammonia; butadiene is a petroleum hydrocarbon obtained from the C4 fraction of steam cracking; styrene monomer is made by dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene — a hydrocarbon obtained in the reaction of ethylene and benzene."

"ABS polymers are resistant to aqueous acids, alkalis, concentrated hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, alcohols and animal, vegetable and mineral oils, but they are swollen by glacial acetic acid, carbon tetrachloride and aromatic hydrocarbons and are attacked by concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids. They are soluble in esters, ketones, ethylene dichloride and acetone"

Lol my finger is already removing the finish off of my "a" key. Not sure if I'm a bum or just don't want to f-!@ up my keyboard but I'm just gonna wait for something i know that works.
