ByuN to begin wrist treatment

(Wiki)ByuN has tweeted that he will seek treatment for his wrists, which have been plagued by chronic pain and numbness for several years. Though ByuN's wrist issue has rarely been an issue in online competition, it has flared up in his last four GSL matches in the AfreecaTV studio (ByuN lost each time).

That's a great news, hopefully he can heal up properly, his GSL matches were more and more worrying.

Glad to hear it! Very curious about what the issue is and why it seems to flare up during GSL events more than online at home. In some ways it's a blessing in disguise that there are so many online tournaments during the time he returned

well ByuN himself has suggested it could be stress or the discomfort of playing on a different chair/desk setup in the studio

Very excited to hear this! His last elimination was particularly sad and it was a scary pattern to see without knowing anything about treatment (though of course his medical stuff is his business, the mid-game pauses were hard to ignore).

Finally. I hope it wasn't too late.
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

Maybe some time but Byun will still compete while getting treatment. I've made it clear he can take breaks whenever but he hasn't had any problems playing WTL so far.

Saw this news earlier -- hope he has a successful treatment and recovery, and that it can be permanently fixed.

I hope height adjustable desks become standard for offline games. We're so overdue for that, SC2 is almost entirely a 1v1 game and we've known about this stuff for sooo long. Or higher standards for chairs, or just having a few extra chairs around that can be adjusted a little bit higher, something.

I'm not the only one that think it's still odd that players and teams don't stipulate certain desk and chair heights in order to play when it comes down to risking short and long term injury, right?

Wait, does the GSL setup not have an adjustable desk? C'mon, for being the "Global standard" for "the most competitive 1v1 game" you'd think they'd have the best set-up available to players.

Moving desks would break up the studio set up. This is the big problem when the television comes in place.

Uh, you realize that the gaming chairs are actually worse than the best ergonomic office chairs? But hey, I would love to see gamers playing on the best ergonomy as well, so maybe they will change that.

Honest opinion: If you cannot even play for an hour without debilitating pain in your wrist and you are the only player in the competition to which this happens, then the problem is your wrist and not the environment even if the latter is suboptimal.

Some accommodation is still in order, it’s a pretty minor issue to resolve. Given Byun doesn’t seem to have these issues as badly on his own setup, at least give the option to replicate that.

Ultimately it was only through discussions on Byun’s issues I even found out the GSL wasn’t really doing this, which was a genuine surprise not just in terms of injuries and comfort.

Players already have that psychological pressure of being in the booth, within reason they should be able to mirror their preferred setups in order to deliver the best gameplay they’re able to.

Aside from that if accommodations have been made and you can’t smoothly make it through a day’s play, then you’re like any other sports star who is carrying an injury and not fit to play.

- Almost all top pros have documented injuries with their wrists or shoulders.
- Byun wrist problems that show up at GSL do not appear at home.

Keep in mind that these players are operating at peak performance with insanely high APMs for long periods. It's not surprising that a hastily assembled chair/desk setup wouldn't be suitable for some of them.

In my opinion GSL should provide a playing environment that can sustain the level of effort the players put out. GSL would not be as prestigious if Byun were excluded because its physical setup is a health hazard for him.

Scarlett has mentioned some of the problems with the GSL environment in an earlier post:

I think ByuN may also need psychological treatment. His mental activities during offline games may also make him nervous and cause the injury to relapse.

Looks like it. What a revival of a thread! I'm glad ByuN is doing better now, though. His health is critical.

SC2 has to be re designed to avoid this idiot injury.

Banelings interactions with marines force terran to be constantly micro-ing their army to avoid an accident (in game...). While i think Blizzard have done a great design work with these units which are the core of SC but now i know how avoid this kind of limit :

Idea : Banelings won t burst anymore but do damage over time

1) counter against too many medivacs, medivacs now heal with aoe (maximum three units at the same time) and slow down the corrosive acid damage of banelings
2) banelings are bigger, their supply cost equal to 1 and they are a bit tanky
3) acid will mainly hurt biological unit

then if you bought too many banelings you won t benefit from an almighty burst.

BONUS : Banelings can be thrown by spore crawlers !
