IEM Katowice 2020: Qualifiers

The North American server qualifier for IEM Katowice 2020 has concluded, with (Wiki)Reynor, (Wiki)Maru, and (Wiki)Zest winning seeds into the round-of-24 of the main event, as well as flights and accommodation. Three more qualifiers will be held—one EU server qualifier and two Korean server qualifiers—awarding eight more seeds into the Ro24. (Wiki)Dark, the 2019 WCS Global Champion, has received an automatic seed.

The next qualifier for IEM Katowice is Korean server qualifier #1, held between January 8th-9th with community streamers broadcasting the matches.

The main IEM Katowice tournament will be held between February 24th and March 1st. It is set to be the first event in the newly announced ESL Pro Tour—the official successor to the previous World Championship Series system.

GGs to Reynor!! Good for him, that TY didn t make it to the qualifying match. He would be been the only one in his breaket to stop him

Shame Cure lost to impact, I am really excited about what he can do this year. But the nerves, oh those nerves he has can block him to deliver when it matters.

Was TY losing to MaSa about the ping or did he send John Sun in his stead?

Considering everyone else he beat after losing to Masa he probably sent John Sun to start the bracket.

Good to see the old cowboy is still dusted off from time to time.

Btw should we make a LP page for John Sun with a list of notable series?

He was on the last patch. Now it's Cure until he plays a TvT that actually matters and he chokes. Definitely doesn't take rocket science to figure out that TY's TvT has been shaky on this patch, his WESG run almost ended with TaeJa.

Having seen the games he was definitely somewhat affected by ping but that shouldn't be enough of an issue to go 0-2 since he also had that ping when he 2-0'd Scarlett with bio.

Yeah, TvT went full baboon in this patch and map pool, and TY has the least baboonery of any korean terran.

Zest filling me with false promises again? Please be as good as you're handsome, Zest!
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

It s the year of Clem :D
His chances to qualify in the EU qualifier are quite good as well.
He is in the Serral-less breaket, as long as he keeps his nerves against potential Koreans, he should be favoured.

Well Inno seems very off recently he even lost to Korean amateur protoss Zoun 0-3 yesterday...

And considering MaSa also beated TY 2-0. The online matches are meaningless as always been unless offline accomplishment from Serral.

It's all about flexibility when it comes to baboonery in a mirror match-up. Whatever your opponent can you, you can do it too,

I'm a little confused about how these qualifiers work with the new ESL Pro Tour. It seems like there is no region lock, ie, anyone can play on any server qualifier. So how does that fit in with the whole "11 pro tour + 16 + 9 Korea" thing on the ESL Pro Tour page? My apologies in advance for being dumb.

Note that even under the new ESL Pro Tour, 2 of the 6 Masters events are supposed to be the equivalent of the global events under the WCS system (which is also why it's 11 spots from the Master events and 9 from Korea, since 2 of the Master spots go to the winners of the global events).

I'm a little sad none of our NA players (Scarlett, Masa, Neeb, Astrea) were able to qualify for the NA qualifier hopefully they make it on another qualifier. Reynor Maru and Zest doing work in the first qualifier though

It's interesting that the order of the server scheduling can matter so much

if you play out KR first, then that's probably 5 less top players who will play in the NA qualifier. Instead, you begin everything with the the NA qualifier, which means you get frickin' Maru trying for a spot. That's not so say NA players would necessarily succeed in a 'softer' NA qualifier (it might be the Euro players who benefit), but it's crazy how the order of the server qualifiers has the potential to affect who gets seeded to IEM.
AdministratorHey HP can you redo everything youve ever done because i have a small complaint?

Wouldn't the KR qualifiers be accordingly easier by three to five players then? Of course there's some asymmetry there since everyone wants their lowest ping server's qualifier to be last, and there's probably some difference in participants (e.g Serral would have participated in the NA qualifier if the order of qualifiers were swapped and he lost in the EU qualifier), but overall is does balance out a bit. I feel like NA players are more doomed by geography (which allows both EU and KR to have doable ping) rather than scheduling.
