World Electronic Sports Games 2018: Grand Finals

The first day of WESG saw eight top players survive the group stage to reach the RO16 playoffs. Some of the tournament favorites had their noses bloodied along the way, with (Wiki)Serral falling to second place in Group A after losing 0-2 to (Wiki)Neeb, while (Wiki)Maru suffered an astounding 0-2 loss to Vietnam's (Wiki)MeomaikA midway through his group (Maru would still finish 1st place in Group C).

An unusually stacked Group A—which perplexed fans and participants as soon as it was drawn—saw WCS Circuit veterans (Wiki)Harstem, (Wiki)ShoWTimE, and (Wiki)MaSa eliminated on the first day of the tournament. Fan favorite (Wiki)Has was also one of the group stage victims, losing to (Wiki)Elazer in a winner-take-all, final match for a playoff spot.

WESG continues on Tuesday, Mar 12 5:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) with Groups E through H in the round of 48, which will determine the remaining eight players to reach the playoffs.

The matchlists for group A-D are empty.
Also, it's surprising how easy these groups are compared to day 1, these groups contain 0-1 championship contenders
Some people int he ro16 will have almost walkover wins
First place finisher is pretty clear cut for the groups, then for 2nd place it s gonna be
E - Ptitdrogo / Probe
F - DNS/Bly
G - Stefano/ Toodming
H - that s actually tough to call, cuz everyone from group H is mediocre at best.

Showtime, Harstem, Masa or Has would have a very reasonable chance of making out of either of these groups

0-1 championship contenders?

Innovation is one already

Scarlett?

Reynor can give anyone a run for his money if he's turning up the heat, and stephano is a pretty high caliber player

I meant 0-1 per group. Like group H has 0, Group G has one etc.

Not sure if this is the case -- it happened in SC1 WCG group stage so worth mentioning -- but Maru may have lost on purpose if he saw Serral lost already to try to ensure avoiding him early in knockout stage.
if you guys could use google and post direct links to the maphacks here it would be greatly appreciated. - Nazgul

That makes no sense, he saw Serral being down, and probably qualifying as 2nd, so he would throw a game to some random who couldnt qualify? If he indeed wanted to do that, and i think it s out of the question, he should have thrown in the Special series or in the last series.
And ensuring you're not getting Serral also means you're ensuring you get another groupwinner, that's hardly that good of a bargain

Doesn't make sense, according to the rules he would have had to throw twice after his win over mjr. Special

Edit>
Wait, I just realized, did Maru fly Seoul - Poland - Seoul - China in 2 weeks? Sounds rough, but at least Seoul - China should be OKish.
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

Lol no way in hell come on now.
Just for a start it's not SC1 where korean could literally shit on everyone else you can always drop some maps/series if your not careful and he would have been better losing to special + if he get second he gets all the other killer + Neeb already knock him out of IEM just 2 weeks ago and it's freaking Maru he dosen't exactly seems to be the master manipulator type.

Neeb looked really sharp, excited to see how he does moving forward, also feels like Serral might suddenly be a bit mortal? He still demolished the rest of his group. Showtime seems to be in a bit of a slump, his recent results have definitely been a bit lackluster.

Basically in IEM Katowize europeans didn't have to deal with the jetlag... now the koreans and Scarlett/Special/Sortof have that advantage. Bad luck for Neeb though.

I mean, yes, but Dark did this as well and cleared his group in first place each time

I think it's more indicative of Maru's overall form than fatigue (which I'm sure plays a part too)

Dark didn't play in GSL...

I'm not making an excuse for Maru, he's not playing very well lately, but still it's quite intense travelling and playing. Katowice, Code S, WESG...

Huh, thought SEA getting 4 spots was generous, but both Meomaika and Lobo almost made it out of their group, so it's well deserved.

Serral washed up. I dont think he is part of the top5 foreigners anymore. Train has already passed, now its time for Mixu.

I think everyone is interested in the Serral vs. Neeb match in the group stage. If there is a video anywhere, can the original poster link to it?
I am also interested in the Maru vs. MeomaikA match.

You can watch Serral vs Neeb in
German: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/393771368?t=00h26m01s
Chinese: https://www.bilibili.com/video/av45980247
Because it's WESG and that's how they roll ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yea that's what I mean, if he 2-1'ed Puck instead of the 1-2 he gets in first in the group at 9 wins and a head to head with Maru if that was a tiebreaker

Furthermore, I consider that some kind of Code A must be reestablished.

wait stephano still plays? I thought he retired to go to school back in WoL.

He didn't go back to school but went on to study medicine.
But he realized it's not for him so he came back, like... 2 or 3 years ago?

What?
Pretty sure he studied mathematics in Belgium or something like that

Serral washed up. I dont think he is part of the top5 foreigners anymore. Train has already passed, now its time for Mixu.

Your prophecies worked in the past, is Mixu becoming Bonjwa in 2022?

Only if elfi will train Mixu. That is the secret behind Serral.

I think everyone is interested in the Serral vs. Neeb match in the group stage. If there is a video anywhere, can the original poster link to it?
I am also interested in the Maru vs. MeomaikA match.

Anyone else think Serral has been giving up too early recently? he usually stands his ground and makes decent comebacks but now he just ggs at slight mistakes

Well he gged after devastating mistakes, to be honest; if he lost his attitude he would have never gifted us that g3 against soO. In the series against Neeb, I agree, he may have gged too early in the second game; he found himself at a disadvantage but the fight almost didn't happen.

That Neeb vs Serral series was very awkward..

Hope Maru can recover his form in the playoffs, I wanna see a consecutive WESG win from him

If anyone feels like watching the Serral vs Neeb games in English, one was put together here in response to the lack of English availability:

Group A is probably the most stacked group of all for Day 1. Could've seen second place easily go to ShowTime.

I am happy that Maru only suffered a single loss even though it was a surprising 0-2. I'm going to blame it on him being tired from the travelling.
