This hurts. While it was clear it was on the horizon from recent news it doesn't make reading this any easier. TotalBiscuit was one of the true heroes of SC2 and the wider gaming community. He may be gone, but he won't be forgotten.

RIP.

One thing we should do in remembering TotalBiscuit is heed his advice from a few years ago:

I encourage all of you, if you have symptoms that last more than a week, to get over the embarrassment and go and see a doctor. Colonoscopy is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be, in the US (at least at my specialist) they knock you out for it entirely so you don't feel a thing. Doctors are professionals, they have heard everything 1000 times before, they are impossible to embarrass. Do not suffer in silence, get screened.

Oh wow...that was…fast.. He had undergone a surgery this/last week to relieve the pain didnt he? While he was a divisive figure there is no doubt he was a hardworking person that did a lot of starcraft. Rest in Peace.

The reason he was at that point, getting that surgery, was cause of deterioration. It wasn't really a good sign.

TB is, and always will be, one of my heroes. One the reasons I'm going into oncology nursing. His will to fight was absolutely incredible.

Great gaming critic, Youtuber, he always took pride in his craft, and even took a giant risk and leap for the Starcaft community because he loved it so much.

Almost every subreddit I participate in currently has a post mourning TB, there's not many people that have had so much of a positive presence in so many gaming communities.

RIP TotalBiscuit, and my condolences to Jenna and the rest of Totalbiscuit's family.

RIP John Bain

My thoughts go out to Genna Bain.
I hope the massive internet legacy left behind will be something good.

But if it comes a day when want to move on I hope "internet" respects that as it would be to respect TB more as well.

Such a sad day, not only for gaming but for humanity. TotalBiscuit, through the actions he undertook, was not only a great and brilliant man, but a genuine hero. Founding and nurturing Axiom taking care of players down on their luck out of his own money was such a noble act.

Rest in peace TB.

it always blows my mind that he just took his own money to fund these kids to play StarCraft. and he just wanted them to play. if they won that was a bonus. but he just wanted them to play the game.

i loved his passion for games. it's a very sad day to see him go. much too soon =(

Wow, didn't think it would come so soon. Very sad loss for the community, I always enjoyed the energy he would bring to a cast and appreciated his numerous Shoutcraft tournaments, especially during 2016, which was a real low-point for the scene.

Can't forget the 2014 Sandisk Invitational either, which imo is easily one of the best tournaments we've ever had, online or not. Not just for the players and the games but also for the professionalism in its production. TB even bothered to put in anti-spoiler buffer time for the VODs, something I almost never see.

Man TB.
We all knew this was upcoming, but that doesn't lessen the hurt I have when waking up and reading this.
Godspeed man. I hope you're more comfortable wherever you've gone to.
We'll all cherish and remember your passion and love for SC2.

That was really sudden. He was retweeting dog pictures just nine hours ago. My heart goes out to Genna and their kid.

Rest in Peace TB. He was a great guy and his contributions to esports, SC2, and gaming as a whole will be remembered.

terrible news

unless one does some hardcore digging and research the average person has no clue how much this guy contributed to the RTS genre...

Wow, this is tragic

I guess given the announcement a couple of weeks ago it was clear that his condition was deteriorating, but it still shocking to read that he has actually passed away. What a genuine legend TB was... A unique voice in SC2 and really gaming as a whole. He was influential, entertaining and truly passionment about games.

Overall I'm at a bit of a loss for words, but I couldn't just pass by this thread without at least posting in commemoration. I very much hope that Genna has plenty of loved ones/friends around her at this time to support her. Sending my love to her as well. It's cool to see TL paying tribute with the logo, I hope it would have made him smile to see that.

Rest in Peace TB....

Rest in Peace John. You were truly a hero of the esports scene. We lost an amazing person today. I cannot imagine just exactly what his family must be going through right now... This hurts a lot... You were definitely taken away too soon John. But at least, you will never be forgotten. Thank you for everything that you did for SC2 and esports. We love you John.

I think that was common. I'd imagine we'd see a ton of testimonials from indie devs that wouldn't maintained the amount of early success without him.

lets not forget that he even heavily promoted league of legends in the early days and reached numbers Riot didn't think was possible (He got to the "design a champion" perk with the Referral program)

Couldn't help but hope that he'd recover, but I've had enough family go through this to know it wasn't likely. Still hurts to hear.

SGDQ is coming up next month, and while it's for MSF and not PCF, it'd still be remiss for there not to be some concerted effort to get his name into a (few) game(s).

Many years ago, I was subscribed to a YouTube channel I had found essentially by accident called The Game Station. When I discovered a YouTuber I enjoyed was on one of their earliest editions of the channel's podcast, I watched the episode. And then I watched another. And another. And as I became a regular viewer, I started watching the hosts' videos individually. I subscribed to TB through that experience. I watched his WTF videos regularly, the podcast regularly.

He mentioned this sort of competitive gaming thing he was involved with. I didn't know what he was on about. I never understood a lot of the stuff he and the other hosts talked about, though I had gathered that it had to do with WoW a lot of the time. But one time, I actually decided to look at this weird game of his. I didn't get it, but the intensity of the players and the casters and the fans blew me away. Turned out he had dragged me into one of the most infamous GSL finals in history - Hyun vs Sniper. And I loved it. I loved slowly understanding what this thing called Starcraft was, and what it meant. It led me to TL, and to LRing. And it led me to esports, and what's now one of the major passions of my life. This memorial post comes from Austin, which had been travelled to for the sake of attending Dreamhack. And competing in it. For the second time. In another game that, in large part, I had been introduced to thanks to a series of videos highlighting it from TB.

My condolences go out to Genna and Orion, neither of whom deserved to have ever gone through any amount of the horrid things that have happened to them in life. While what we know about Orion is limited, a highly sensible decision on the part of his highly sensible parents, we know plenty about the strong, intelligent, generous, and unbreakable person that is Genna Bain. Privacy now. Then support. She deserves all of both that the world could offer her.

John Bain, rest in peace. You touched lives around the world, and changed quite a few along the way. You were a tireless advocate for what you thought was right in the industries you were a part of - videos like Garry's Incident are a gold standard. You practiced what you preached, refusing to give review scores and spearheading the practice of labeling sponsored content. You handled controversy well, constantly doing all you could to shake off the toxic groups that had latched onto you from a controversy that changed after it was too late to untangle yourself from it. I'll always regret not shaking your hand at Dreamhack Austin 2016. You led me to become this mess. And I thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

A world of gamers salute.

I want to type so much out, telling how much respect I have for him, how much he helped the community, how much he helped not only this game but so many other games. He always spoke his mind and even though, sometimes his words may have been harsh, you still respected him because you knew he had so much passion for gaming in general. I can think of all the great things he's done, the hilarious podcasts, the amazing casting, the tournaments using community maps, everything, but I feel like no matter what I type just won't do him justice. The craziest part is, not only did he do so much for starcraft 2, but look at all the other games, videos, blogs, interviews, etc etc he's done. Just absolutely amazing.

We lost an extremely important person today. I believe that John knows that his memories, his passion and his love won't fade. Everything he's ever done, everyone he's made smile, laugh or even rage, that's who he was and that is who he will always be. God bless.

Rest in peace, John "TotalBiscuit" Bain.

I remember i got terrified when i got strange results on normal exams, i had the luck to them discover it's a small problem that i can live with or do surgery for minor differences.

He lived on the absolute worst case scenario like it was a flu, i always wondered... How? People like him are really an inpiration.

Rest in peace and i hope good people will rise up to keep his content alive, as it happened to other internet people like Kao Megura, ChrisRPG and Everhate.

A crying shame to lose someone like him. Unlike most he was through and through upright. More praise was in the previous post a couple of weeks ago so let the following suffice

You and myself had one thing in coming, we both sucked at starcraft. You have my deepest gratitude for the years of games critique.

Rest in peace TotalBiscuit! We knew you didn't have much time after last announcement, but I didn't expect this to be so soon. Wow, the guy was only 33 years old...

Is there something we could do to make some modest donation to his family? Is there direct donation? I want to buy something like his SC2 announcer pack, but Blizzard will probably make profit from that.

Few men change the way other think and act for the better, but John Bain was one of them. I'm sad at his passing but glad to see his spirit live on in the minds and hearts of thousands of gamers around the world.

Missed him even when he didn't cast much in Legacy compared to HOTS and especially Wings.

He tweeted just 3-4 days ago about getting better. Enjoy life friends, he lived his to the fullest.

I just realized that in one of his last tweets a week ago he told people to buy his game of the year 2014.

I went ahead and checked back what that was. It was Wolfenstein: The New Order.

From his review back then this instantly stood out:
These NPCs that I worked together with as a team to achieve my goals and felt a genuine sense of camaraderie, thanks again to great writing and characterization. Tell me, when was the last videogame that had a badass main NPC character that was in a wheel chair and used a colostomy bag? Can you? Of course you can't. That's just a really interesting character and well-written.
I have no idea if this was on purpose or not, if that was what he was even referring to but fuck, this feels too damn much like his humor and I would not be surprised at all if that's how he saw himself at the point of him tweeting this.

I'm not the right community member to organize it, but I think that the VERY LEAST that we should do is hold a Starcraft tournament in his honor and give the profits to his family for their future.

I would more than gladly donate to that.

Endless sadness. Such a tragedy.

TB was one of the people I felt you could always trust was honest and told it straight. Many could learn a lot from him.

A huge loss for SC2 and gaming, but first are foremost his family and friends.

I had considered writing to TB when the news of the cancer being terminal came out, I now regret not doing that.
I never met the guy but from what I saw of him on his Youtube channel to the various conventions he attended to shoutcraft I can't help but feel that this guy was something special. He made many communities including the Starcraft community a better place, constantly striving for innovation and improvement wherever he thought possible. Truly today we have lost a shining example of a human being and a man who's work ethic and attitude to his passions we should all follow.
I am not religious but I can't help but feel that if anyone deserves something better at the end of it all then it's him.
Rest In Peace John Bain. You will be missed by more than you could ever realise.

I always thought for sure he was going to survive this, but sadly not even someone as mentally strong as him can survive something like this.

I'm going to admit that I was never his fan, so I never followed his content. I do respect everything he did for eSports though and feel so sad that this has happened. It's awful, awful news for someone to die that young

RIP TB! From a fellow British Starcraft caster (I do BW though), I will continue to do everything I can to improve eSports. I may not be as well known as you were, but you inspire me to try even harder. No matter what was hitting you, no matter how bad you must've felt you still gave your absolute all to make things for the community. Thank you for everything.

rest easy brother.
One time that happened and I just stopped everything, selected the offending SCV, hit Cancel, moved it over to my Barracks, made a Marine, had the Marine shoot it to death, then left the game.

The man was linked to all the games I care about. SC2, WoW and Dark Souls.

When we remember his legacy, we shouldn't forget that his 500k petition probably brang Dark Souls to the PC.

Apart from what he did for the games I love, he taught me a lot about what integrity, honesty and transparency mean.

My world got a little darker today, and I don't even want to know what his wife and her child are going through right now.

Edit: just saw the top hat on the TL logo, queue the water works.
So you know this adventure of a lifetime, it was quite short, I have to say.

TB was my hero, there is none as genuine as him and he really impacted my life for the better, In a world full of plastic and smokescreens TB was one of few that I felt spoke his mind genuinely. I will never forget him and the way he has helped me will stay with me until I die.

The world feels like a darker place today than it was yesterday but I will to the best of my ability stay true to my principles and shine a light of positivity in the world. Its just a flickering candle compared to his roaring flame but it is all that we can do, let us be inspired and take one step forward at a time.

The voice of this great man will stay with me for a long time, telling me I "might as well gg now"

I still listen to the cooptional podcast going to- and fro work, I'm several weeks behind and I think my rides the coming month will be bumpy and emotional.

Devestating, absolutely devestating, so quick as well, only seems like yesterday he posted treatment was going to be a lot harder but he will continue to fight. Now, he is gone.

Without Total Biscuit i would never have gotten anywhere near the world of Esports, he was the first person i "found" through WoW to open me up to "that world" of online gaming/content creating which eventually somehow bought me to StarCraft and TeamLiquid.net. Without his Ensidia raid videos i would not have gone down this path in my life...for that i am greatful as i can't think of a life without it..

Thank You Total Biscuit, R.I.P

This hits me really hard, even though he was terminal. Much love to his family. What a sad day. Fuck cancer.

He saved entire indie companies from going under by covering well made but unknown games.

He brought new life in the stale SC2 scene with Shoutcraft.

I was never particularly a fan but this is very saddening.
When I saw the black hat on TL header this morning I knew something was up.

Rest in peace.

Wow, that's so sad. I mean I knew from his previous statements that it was going to be over sooner rather than later due to treatment failure and his deteriorating health, but it still came as a shock.

My condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

A man of passion, dignity, creativity, courage and humor. Fought till the end like a true warrior. This is truly the darkest day of StarCraft esports. It is not going to be the same without his voice.

Rest in peace, TotalBiscuit. You were and are an inspiration. I thoroughly enjoyed your videos and commentary. Your dialogue on gaming press integrity (such as accepting free stuff from companies whose products you were reviewing) was so great.

Terribly sad this happened, horrible way to go and a huge loss to the gaming community.

I was lucky enough to stumble across Shoutcraft right at the start, and from that day Totalbiscit was a huge part of my SC2 experience.

I though TotalBiscuit won this battle I remember when he said to everyone, to go sometimes to the doctor, just to check if everything is ok... I went, I checked, just in case. Was there any information that cancer is back?

Yes people knew that the cancer was back, and that he was fighting the whole time, TB was very open about the whole process.

When this post was made http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/closed-threads/533318-totalbiscuits-future, everyone knew what was going to happen, but it still came way too soon.

Rest in peace, John.
The amount of people you got into gaming is insane.
Thank you for all you have done and for being being our voice in the battle of mediocrity and greediness in game publishing.
You won't be forgotten, and I hope you get a gigantic statue for what you have been doing.

My sincere condolences, Genna.

this is so sad. my eyes are wet. we have and had great casters/personalities around sc2, but TB was special. Such a great spirit, such an inspiration even beyond gaming. A rolemodel for the idea, that you can make a living out of nearly everything, if you "just" work hard and believe in yourself. Wherever you are now, thank you for lots of hours of the best entertainment possible. thank you for that.

Condolences to his family.

One of my favourite human beings, even though we never met in person.
Stopped watching ESL content in 2022 when the company was acquired by Savvy Gaming Group. Also object to sponsorships by the U.S. Air Force. Thanks for the lively discussions about sportswashing. StarCraft II is not for me anymore.

John Bain, thank you for everything you've done. Not only have you helped pushed gaming forward and being a vanguard, but you have also done so much outside of the gaming sphere, more than anyone has asked of you. You have supported many good causes that have helped many people in dire need.

The first time I stumbled upon you was many years back, during the time you were making video content for World of Warcraft. I instantly became hooked and began following you, listening on the discussions you had about various things. Not everything you said I agreed on, but the way you presented and built your arguments I highly respected. You were not shy of bringing in people to have a discussion on different subjects.

First time I came in close contact with you was during the first iteration of ShoutCraft Clan Wars, back in 2014. You came to the Skype group chat of Sc2 map makers, looking for help in creating this event with fun and wacky maps. And we did so again for Season 2, where I even helped capturing footage for showcase reels of the maps. It truly was an exciting time, to take part and experience the event as a whole. It helped me gain encouragement to try new boundaries, not only in gaming but also outside as well. Cactus Valley and many of my other Sc2 creations wouldn’t have existed without the aid of you.

It’s cruel to be taken at a such young age, and I can’t imagine the pain your surrounding family and friends are experiencing right now. This day may be the day of mourning, but it’ll also be the day of remembrance of your remarkable accomplishments. Rest in peace, John.

Fair to say I'd never have gotten into Starcraft 2 and fallen in love with watching and playing this game if it wasn't for TB. He wasn't the best caster, but he was the most welcoming for a newbie like me. His "I suck at SC2" series gave me hope I could one day get better.

RIP TB. I never met him, I was able to have a small discussion with him here, those small interactions will stay with me forever.

Rest in peace young man.

Hope you are in a better place with minimum 60 fps

Many of the games I bought was because of TB and his "wtf series" and most were quite good. Fuck cancer!

This really came as a shock, last time I read about TotalBiscuit he was doing fine but from the links it looks it ended up resurfacing… I’m glad he ended spending time with his family and friends, my deepest condolences to Genna and his family.

I have some many good memories from listening to TotalBiscuit back in the WoL days, staying late at night watching so many MLGs, IPLs, Ironsquids… Listening to him alongside Day9, Apollo, Husky & co really helped me through some dark times back then. His shoutcasting was so engaging and his presence in the scene gave away a feeling of reassurance.

I remember reading about his ordeals getting a Green Card and also reading his blogs after various events giving much insight behind the scene.
I also remember Axiom, how they picked up some ex-SlayerS boys and made interaction between western fans and Korean pros more common, and that time when Axiom won GSTL.

On so many occasions did I watch his ‘WTF is …’ series during my indie games hoarding spree and ended up buying games I enjoyed.
Even after my interest in Starcraft dwindled by the end of WoL and started watching more Dota, you made enjoyable content in Dota and kept me occupied.

We might have never met in person but I have so many good memories to thank you for. You certainly will be missed and I sincerely thank you for all the good memories you have given me, rest in peace John.

Just so sad, a man of such integrity and passion taken too soon.

Frequently spiky some might say, but to me he was generous to the generous and just didn't suffer fools gladly, which to me is a good way to be. Ran his teams, his events and his YT content with a real adherence to his own standards and for the net benefit of Starcraft and gaming as a whole.

Rest in Peace John Bain.

I only ever watched videos, could you link or pm me a stand-out piece please? Was trying to suggest a video of his in return, but I feel like I can't choose a single representative one (his arbitrary game awards come close to showing what his cynical demeanour, in the good sense, is though).

Condolences once more.

TB was the first youtuber I watched regularly. I had just gotten back into World of Warcraft at the end of Wrath of Lich King and was very interested in the Cataclysm expansion, but with no beta access, I had to go to youtube to find out more. There, I found my first ever Total biscuit video. It was The Worgen starting zone part 1. He made me laugh with his jokes, he made me more informed with his analysis, and made me more invested as a gamer with his passion. John "Total Biscuit" Bain has been, strangely enough, a big part of my life. He got me through some dark times in high school and my early years in college and in part fueled my passion for Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and many other games that I still play to this day. Seeing as how Total Biscuit was a big fan of Sabaton, I thought it fitting to link their song Long Live the King:

My condolences to his friends and family, he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, John Bain. You have earned it

My deepest condolences to Genna. We've all of us lost a wonderful and passionate man who will be forever remembered as a titan of gaming.

Rest in peace.

I wasn't overly familiar with his work but back in the day i saw some scII tournaments he organized / casted and he seemed like quite a passionate guy.

May you rest in peace John, the best thing we can do for you now is packing a peace of your soul with us now.

This makes me so sad. Listening to blue plz and epic as a kid really helped me to relax and got me to a stable emotional state that let me survive the bullying I experienced in elementary school. He also did so much for the sc2 community and helped to keep the scene alive through rough times. He had a sharp and critical way of looking at games that I always respected.TB was a fantastic and gifted human being my thoughts go out to his loved ones.

He was only hostile toward his loser haters who contributed nothing to the community. On one side there are nerd trolls who do nothing except whine and complain and attack TB for no good reason other than because their own lives suck, on the other side is a legendary caster, content creator, tournament organizer, team owner, and great person. Pretty easy decision for me. RIP

You have been a consistently terrible person throughout all the years i've seen you on this site, how are you still around?

Do you ever take a look in the mirror and realise that your life is not on the right path?

Disagreeing with facts is a good way out outing oneself as a fool.

99% of people in this community who used to get into arguments with TB here or on twitter are absolute wastes of space who have literally never contributed anything, not a single thing to this community, let alone of fraction of what he has. Spastic basement dwellers who were buttblasted that he wasn't a Brood War god like everyone else reckons themselves to be (even though they were prob D- on iCCup at best, if even that), and that he made money from YouTube without fully devoting every waking hour to StarCraft.

And yet he did so much regardless, in spite of these pathetic buffoons.

It's unfortunate that TL never banned people for idiocy, only for breaking civility (and even then was far too selective to do so), because those people didn't deserve to be here in the first place if we're being real, but oh well, this isn't the place nor the time...

While I was not a fan of TB's style, it cannot be denied that he was a giant and a pioneer in the gaming industry.
His contributions to SC2, including the Shoutcast invitationals and team Axiom, will be remembered by every starcraft fan.

Started watching John's content around 2010 when WoW: Cataclysm was in closed Beta and he and Jesse Cox were pumping out hundreds of videos. I stuck for the mailbox, him giving his personal opinion on loads of things, and when Starcraft II had just come out he hosted his first ShoutCraft event. Ever since I've been hooked on the game and it's community.

The guy really made me want to do stuff within gaming, and later esports. Looking back at it, he's sort of shaped my life in the past couple of years. He taught us all to be very wary towards certain business practices and gaming companies, and he was always honest. And when he had an opinion, it was usually well informed and logical, whether you agreed with it or not; he stood for it and wouldn't bend for reasons many others have: influence, money, etc.

I'm really, really glad I got to meet him last November at BlizzCon.

TB has just left such a mark on the gaming industry and esports scene as a whole, and since I read that he passed when I woke up this friday morning, I haven't really stopped thinking about it. Watching his old videos is also strange. You know he's not there, but he sort of always will be. It's just so strange. We all knew it was coming sometime soon. I, and others I've spoken to just never really thought about TB actually being mortal.

Rest in Peace John, Totalbiscuit, The Cynical Brit. You were a living legend then, and you're still a legend now. And I really hope heaven's in 60FPS or you're going to have your work cut out for you up there.

Genna and family: My condolences to you all. This is the worst pain anyone will ever have to go through and nobody, especially you, don't deserve this. Stay strong.

I know there's a GoFundMe set up but TB also mentioned that if people wanted to help, besides donating, they could also support him and his family by buying something of his, that way there's an exchange of value. He specifically mentioned his merchandise: https://represent.com/store/totalbiscuit - this is just another way of showing your support and also getting something in return that reminds you of this amazing guy

He will be setting up the StarCraft LAN and tourney stuff up for us, so we can all play when we catch up with him at the destination. See you round TB, Rest in peace.

RIP. Remember him casting from the early days and seeing him at MLG Anaheim. Did so much for the SC2 scene. Shocking how sudden it was. Incredible how dignified he handled it all.

Massive loss for PC gaming. Big shoes to fill.

I know it may sound a little morbid to some but I find it really touching, watching the Co-Optional Podcast today and Genna said that his ashes will be placed in the Axiom/Acer GSTL championship trophy they won (With the teams full support).

Just noticed. At work, I *still* have the "Join the glorious 60 fps revolution" desktop background. Set it up years ago and became so used to it that I didn't notice "oh, I have this TB background image".

This is such a terrible loss.

I don't know of anyone who could get remotely close to the level of awareness, integrity, reach, analysis he had managed. He was like a safeguard for both consumers and producers alike, because it is useful to get put in your place, the right way, in the long run.

A terrible loss for the healthiness of the industry. I know I will still check his youtube channels for some time... fuck.

If you read this, condolecences to his family. I don't feel most people realize who/what we've lost.
Resistance ain't futile

I only know TB from the day he helped with my youtube competition thingy, but that's more than enough to show the character of this amazing individual.

Gonna do a live stream tribute drawing of totalBiscuit today at around noon EST @ https://www.youtube.com/c/TheportraitartOfficial/live or https://www.twitch.tv/theportraitart (I use multi-stream)

hope to see some TLers there. There are usually not many people watching live drawing streams as they can be quite long and boring sometimes, but feel free to join and chat and hang out. I also have a discord server if people want to join and actually talk on the mic and voice chat and so on. (discord address https://discord.gg/QPU82m) I'll post this in blog too.

I'm not sure where his fan base are and how to reach them otherwise I'll invite them to join. (maybe someone can help) But i know many are here on TL and I'm definitely one of them.

I guess he was a controversial person because of his argumentative nature and forceful personality, but I'm very sad he is gone. His passion for SC2 and for gaming was really amazing. RIP

I should add here that once TB insulted me for saying something stupid, and then I sent him a PM saying that in fact I was right because of reasons X,Y,Z and then he apologized to me and agreed with my point. That's why I liked TB, he was very passionate, with a big ego, but he was never above engaging with ordinary people and fans and such.
Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o' goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don't bite; them's my views--amen, so be it.

I have difficulty imagining a world where TB does not exist. This actually hurts. The first time I saw him was at a dream-hack where he took over the mic because the official caster was struggling.

He was made for casting. He was fun, he was vocal .. he was verbal .. he was all that and more.

E sport hall of fame for sure.

Fitting with the top-hat on the TL logo.

The saddest part about any death, is when people stop talking about a person.

That is when they really die to me. So with TL taking the hat off the logo and this thread slowing down... it's just really sad because it is time to move on... without him.

I think it's fine. His friends, family, and loved ones will move on, life must move on. His legacy is a long one, affecting so many people he helped and inspired, he will not be forgotten. It's now up to us to make sure that way.

Yes man. People can't just think all time about those who left us too soon. But i can assure you that in decades to comes his family and close people will think of him. Even in youtube people often go to see old video and i know that even in 10 years and more people will still watch his and have a thought for him.

pretty rough hit piece on TotalBiscuit in Forbes a couple of days ago.

http://archive.is/FKmsm

lots of incorrect statements.
like .. SC2 didn't come out until July 2010. he couldn't be an SC2 commentator in 2009.
there were no MLG SC2 events in 2009.

click bait i guess. this article had 10 times more views than her past 5 articles combined.
i changed the link so it goes to an archive rather than the article itself on the forbes website.

also, it preserves all the factual errors in case the writer chooses to correct them and tries to pretend a correction never occurred.

Because the world's full of terrible human beings, and for some of them this is a way of life.

Imagine being so pitiful and pathetic that you live in festering hatred for years over some perceived slight and then air out your delusional and spiteful grievances like this...

Shame on Forbes for not properly curating their contributor section. Nutcases like this will only damage their reputation in the long run.

I think those are minor quibbles, the author just confused the dates by one year. Otherwise the article seems factually correct, it is just that it takes a hateful, uncharitable tone and editorializes to cast all of TB's actions in a bad light.

Some people have never forgiven TB for supporting Gamergate, because they can't grasp that people have complex motivations and because they overestimate the role of individuals within movements.

Yes, Gamergate turned out to have been a reactionary movement whose main accomplishments were inciting harassment, and yes, if you had followed the online right and 4chan and if you had read forum threads discussing e.g. sexualization of female video game characters, then you could have predicted that Gamergate was a fraudulent movement from the outset. A lot of people did and were more prescient than TB.

I'm not certain of TB's motivations, but presumably he thought that as one of the preeminent consumer advocates and independent voices in video game criticism, he should lend his voice to any sort of populist gamer uprising against corruption. He was politically naïve and later sought to distance himself from Gamergate only when it was already far too obvious that it was primarily a hate movement.

I think it's a matter of perspective. If you were part of these online feminist call-out cultures, like SRS, Jezebel, Gamerghazi, Pandagon etc. and all you know about TB is that 1. he was a consumer advocate for gaaaamers (eeeew! yuck!); and 2. he supported Gamergate (omg! Nazi!) 3. he is a privileged white male (#KillAllMen) then yes, you are going to cheer on his death.

I also wasn't happy about TB's actions with regards to Gamergate, but I respect his work, his passion, his dedication and I think that in the grand scheme of things his original Gamergate advocacy is just one stupid decision in an otherwise great career. TB's support for StarCraft 2 alone is sufficient proof of his positive side.

Without turning this into a political statement, let's just say that there is a reason people hate online feminists. Yes, sometimes people are sexist and misogynist and unfairly view all of feminism through the lens of a few handpicked examples. But sometimes feminists can be insufferable, will excommunicate you for one slip-up, will call everyone who slightly disagrees with them a reactionary, will consider themselves morally superior to everyone, will dishonestly interpret everything you say, and will carry grudges for years. There is a reason people dismissively talk about call-out culture. They don't deserve most of the hate they get, and certainly Anita Sarkeesian was treated incredibly unfairly and did nothing wrong, but as a political movement it's also a sort of dead end and I think their attitude towards TB is emblematic of this.

I should also say that I checked Gamerghazi after TB died and although there were some hateful comments, there were also a lot of people who viewed him positively overall and who did not support the hardline stance. I expected worse, to be honest.
Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o' goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don't bite; them's my views--amen, so be it.

I'm not going to say much, but this shouldn't be the place to discuss the forbes article.
I want this to be a place where people who liked TB can say how much they miss him.

If you start talking about his wider impact, you either get a situation where their is an echo chamber of "I can't believe people hated TB, he was literally an angel"

OR

Critics don't hold their tongues, and we get wall to wall arguments about how someone who is dead is a jerk or not,

and I'm not sure that's the original intent of the thread.

Don't know what the whole debate was about in essence, but thanks for the write-up and summary. I feel TB's message always was "be a better consumer" and rarely dabbled into other affairs, being clear on the fact that a one-off commentary will rarely influence others to be a better person as a whole.

As far as militant feminism goes... well, a lot is being misconstrued and the forbes article actually debunks a bit on that. Unrelated: Check out further reactions to the moderate stance of for example Annemunition (spoilers: more hate. And yes, this should be another thread, as people hating people still shouldn't be the norm). Yeah, absolutist positions will drive people away and are unreasonable and unfair, but (to keep it short) what's the (preferable) alternative?

Edit: Added very short reply top.

Thanks for locking the thread. Again, the essential: best wishes to TB's family&friends--let's focus on what counts
