I encourage all of you, if you have symptoms that last more than a week, to get over the embarrassment and go and see a doctor. Colonoscopy is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be, in the US (at least at my specialist) they knock you out for it entirely so you don't feel a thing. Doctors are professionals, they have heard everything 1000 times before, they are impossible to embarrass. Do not suffer in silence, get screened.

Can't forget the 2014 Sandisk Invitational either, which imo is easily one of the best tournaments we've ever had, online or not. Not just for the players and the games but also for the professionalism in its production. TB even bothered to put in anti-spoiler buffer time for the VODs, something I almost never see. RIP

![]() I guess given the announcement a couple of weeks ago it was clear that his condition was deteriorating, but it still shocking to read that he has actually passed away. What a genuine legend TB was... A unique voice in SC2 and really gaming as a whole. He was influential, entertaining and truly passionment about games. Overall I'm at a bit of a loss for words, but I couldn't just pass by this thread without at least posting in commemoration. I very much hope that Genna has plenty of loved ones/friends around her at this time to support her. Sending my love to her as well. It's cool to see TL paying tribute with the logo, I hope it would have made him smile to see that. Rest in Peace TB....

I'd imagine we'd see a ton of testimonials from indie devs that wouldn't maintained the amount of early success without him. lets not forget that he even heavily promoted league of legends in the early days and reached numbers Riot didn't think was possible (He got to the "design a champion" perk with the Referral program)

He mentioned this sort of competitive gaming thing he was involved with. I didn't know what he was on about. I never understood a lot of the stuff he and the other hosts talked about, though I had gathered that it had to do with WoW a lot of the time. But one time, I actually decided to look at this weird game of his. I didn't get it, but the intensity of the players and the casters and the fans blew me away. Turned out he had dragged me into one of the most infamous GSL finals in history - Hyun vs Sniper. And I loved it. I loved slowly understanding what this thing called Starcraft was, and what it meant. It led me to TL, and to LRing. And it led me to esports, and what's now one of the major passions of my life. This memorial post comes from Austin, which had been travelled to for the sake of attending Dreamhack. And competing in it. For the second time. In another game that, in large part, I had been introduced to thanks to a series of videos highlighting it from TB. My condolences go out to Genna and Orion, neither of whom deserved to have ever gone through any amount of the horrid things that have happened to them in life. While what we know about Orion is limited, a highly sensible decision on the part of his highly sensible parents, we know plenty about the strong, intelligent, generous, and unbreakable person that is Genna Bain. Privacy now. Then support. She deserves all of both that the world could offer her. John Bain, rest in peace. You touched lives around the world, and changed quite a few along the way. You were a tireless advocate for what you thought was right in the industries you were a part of - videos like Garry's Incident are a gold standard. You practiced what you preached, refusing to give review scores and spearheading the practice of labeling sponsored content. You handled controversy well, constantly doing all you could to shake off the toxic groups that had latched onto you from a controversy that changed after it was too late to untangle yourself from it. I'll always regret not shaking your hand at Dreamhack Austin 2016. You led me to become this mess. And I thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart. A world of gamers salute.

I went ahead and checked back what that was. It was Wolfenstein: The New Order. From his review back then this instantly stood out: These NPCs that I worked together with as a team to achieve my goals and felt a genuine sense of camaraderie, thanks again to great writing and characterization. Tell me, when was the last videogame that had a badass main NPC character that was in a wheel chair and used a colostomy bag? Can you? Of course you can't. That's just a really interesting character and well-written. I have no idea if this was on purpose or not, if that was what he was even referring to but fuck, this feels too damn much like his humor and I would not be surprised at all if that's how he saw himself at the point of him tweeting this.;;

Not really as into the SCBW / SC2 scene as I used to be years ago, but I still remember the name TotalBiscuit. I'm not the right community member to organize it, but I think that the VERY LEAST that we should do is hold a Starcraft tournament in his honor and give the profits to his family for their future. I would more than gladly donate to that. That's a really nice idea.

I never met the guy but from what I saw of him on his Youtube channel to the various conventions he attended to shoutcraft I can't help but feel that this guy was something special. He made many communities including the Starcraft community a better place, constantly striving for innovation and improvement wherever he thought possible. Truly today we have lost a shining example of a human being and a man who's work ethic and attitude to his passions we should all follow. I am not religious but I can't help but feel that if anyone deserves something better at the end of it all then it's him. Rest In Peace John Bain. When we remember his legacy, we shouldn't forget that his 500k petition probably brang Dark Souls to the PC. Apart from what he did for the games I love, he taught me a lot about what integrity, honesty and transparency mean. My world got a little darker today, and I don't even want to know what his wife and her child are going through right now. Edit: just saw the top hat on the TL logo, queue the water works.

The world feels like a darker place today than it was yesterday but I will to the best of my ability stay true to my principles and shine a light of positivity in the world. Its just a flickering candle compared to his roaring flame but it is all that we can do, let us be inspired and take one step forward at a time. Without Total Biscuit i would never have gotten anywhere near the world of Esports, he was the first person i "found" through WoW to open me up to "that world" of online gaming/content creating which eventually somehow bought me to StarCraft and TeamLiquid.net. Without his Ensidia raid videos i would not have gone down this path in my life...for that i am greatful as i can't think of a life without it.. Thank You Total Biscuit, R.I.P

He saved entire indie companies from going under by covering well made but unknown games. He brought new life in the stale SC2 scene with Shoutcraft. Never forget the live Shoutcraft at Blizzcon 2016

The first time I stumbled upon you was many years back, during the time you were making video content for World of Warcraft. I instantly became hooked and began following you, listening on the discussions you had about various things. Not everything you said I agreed on, but the way you presented and built your arguments I highly respected. You were not shy of bringing in people to have a discussion on different subjects. First time I came in close contact with you was during the first iteration of ShoutCraft Clan Wars, back in 2014. You came to the Skype group chat of Sc2 map makers, looking for help in creating this event with fun and wacky maps. And we did so again for Season 2, where I even helped capturing footage for showcase reels of the maps. It truly was an exciting time, to take part and experience the event as a whole. It helped me gain encouragement to try new boundaries, not only in gaming but also outside as well. Cactus Valley and many of my other Sc2 creations wouldn’t have existed without the aid of you. It’s cruel to be taken at a such young age, and I can’t imagine the pain your surrounding family and friends are experiencing right now. This day may be the day of mourning, but it’ll also be the day of remembrance of your remarkable accomplishments. Rest in peace, John. -Rasmus ‘Ferisii’ Walther

I have some many good memories from listening to TotalBiscuit back in the WoL days, staying late at night watching so many MLGs, IPLs, Ironsquids… Listening to him alongside Day9, Apollo, Husky & co really helped me through some dark times back then. His shoutcasting was so engaging and his presence in the scene gave away a feeling of reassurance. I remember reading about his ordeals getting a Green Card and also reading his blogs after various events giving much insight behind the scene. I also remember Axiom, how they picked up some ex-SlayerS boys and made interaction between western fans and Korean pros more common, and that time when Axiom won GSTL. On so many occasions did I watch his ‘WTF is …’ series during my indie games hoarding spree and ended up buying games I enjoyed. Even after my interest in Starcraft dwindled by the end of WoL and started watching more Dota, you made enjoyable content in Dota and kept me occupied. We might have never met in person but I have so many good memories to thank you for. You certainly will be missed and I sincerely thank you for all the good memories you have given me, rest in peace John.

Frequently spiky some might say, but to me he was generous to the generous and just didn't suffer fools gladly, which to me is a good way to be. Ran his teams, his events and his YT content with a real adherence to his own standards and for the net benefit of Starcraft and gaming as a whole. Rest in Peace John Bain.

Disagreeing with facts is a good way out outing oneself as a fool. 99% of people in this community who used to get into arguments with TB here or on twitter are absolute wastes of space who have literally never contributed anything, not a single thing to this community, let alone of fraction of what he has. Spastic basement dwellers who were buttblasted that he wasn't a Brood War god like everyone else reckons themselves to be (even though they were prob D- on iCCup at best, if even that), and that he made money from YouTube without fully devoting every waking hour to StarCraft. And yet he did so much regardless, in spite of these pathetic buffoons. It's unfortunate that TL never banned people for idiocy, only for breaking civility (and even then was far too selective to do so), because those people didn't deserve to be here in the first place if we're being real, but oh well, this isn't the place nor the time... ![]()

The guy really made me want to do stuff within gaming, and later esports. Looking back at it, he's sort of shaped my life in the past couple of years. He taught us all to be very wary towards certain business practices and gaming companies, and he was always honest. And when he had an opinion, it was usually well informed and logical, whether you agreed with it or not; he stood for it and wouldn't bend for reasons many others have: influence, money, etc. I'm really, really glad I got to meet him last November at BlizzCon. TB has just left such a mark on the gaming industry and esports scene as a whole, and since I read that he passed when I woke up this friday morning, I haven't really stopped thinking about it. Watching his old videos is also strange. You know he's not there, but he sort of always will be. It's just so strange. We all knew it was coming sometime soon. I, and others I've spoken to just never really thought about TB actually being mortal. Rest in Peace John, Totalbiscuit, The Cynical Brit. You were a living legend then, and you're still a legend now. And I really hope heaven's in 60FPS or you're going to have your work cut out for you up there. Genna and family: My condolences to you all. This is the worst pain anyone will ever have to go through and nobody, especially you, don't deserve this. Stay strong. I know there's a GoFundMe set up but TB also mentioned that if people wanted to help, besides donating, they could also support him and his family by buying something of his, that way there's an exchange of value. He specifically mentioned his merchandise: https://represent.com/store/totalbiscuit - this is just another way of showing your support and also getting something in return that reminds you of this amazing guy ![]()

I don't know of anyone who could get remotely close to the level of awareness, integrity, reach, analysis he had managed. He was like a safeguard for both consumers and producers alike, because it is useful to get put in your place, the right way, in the long run. A terrible loss for the healthiness of the industry. I know I will still check his youtube channels for some time... fuck. If you read this, condolecences to his family. I don't feel most people realize who/what we've lost.

Gonna do a live stream tribute drawing of totalBiscuit today at around noon EST @ https://www.youtube.com/c/TheportraitartOfficial/live or https://www.twitch.tv/theportraitart (I use multi-stream) hope to see some TLers there. There are usually not many people watching live drawing streams as they can be quite long and boring sometimes, but feel free to join and chat and hang out. I also have a discord server if people want to join and actually talk on the mic and voice chat and so on. (discord address https://discord.gg/QPU82m) I'll post this in blog too. I'm not sure where his fan base are and how to reach them otherwise I'll invite them to join. (maybe someone can help) But i know many are here on TL and I'm definitely one of them. ![]() I should add here that once TB insulted me for saying something stupid, and then I sent him a PM saying that in fact I was right because of reasons X,Y,Z and then he apologized to me and agreed with my point. That's why I liked TB, he was very passionate, with a big ego, but he was never above engaging with ordinary people and fans and such.

i changed the link so it goes to an archive rather than the article itself on the forbes website. also, it preserves all the factual errors in case the writer chooses to correct them and tries to pretend a correction never occurred.

SC2 didn't come out until July 2010. he couldn't be an SC2 commentator in 2009. there were no MLG SC2 events in 2009. I think those are minor quibbles, the author just confused the dates by one year. Otherwise the article seems factually correct, it is just that it takes a hateful, uncharitable tone and editorializes to cast all of TB's actions in a bad light. Some people have never forgiven TB for supporting Gamergate, because they can't grasp that people have complex motivations and because they overestimate the role of individuals within movements. Yes, Gamergate turned out to have been a reactionary movement whose main accomplishments were inciting harassment, and yes, if you had followed the online right and 4chan and if you had read forum threads discussing e.g. sexualization of female video game characters, then you could have predicted that Gamergate was a fraudulent movement from the outset. A lot of people did and were more prescient than TB. I'm not certain of TB's motivations, but presumably he thought that as one of the preeminent consumer advocates and independent voices in video game criticism, he should lend his voice to any sort of populist gamer uprising against corruption. He was politically naïve and later sought to distance himself from Gamergate only when it was already far too obvious that it was primarily a hate movement. I think it's a matter of perspective. If you were part of these online feminist call-out cultures, like SRS, Jezebel, Gamerghazi, Pandagon etc. and all you know about TB is that 1. he was a consumer advocate for gaaaamers (eeeew! yuck!); and 2. he supported Gamergate (omg! Nazi!) 3. he is a privileged white male (#KillAllMen) then yes, you are going to cheer on his death. I also wasn't happy about TB's actions with regards to Gamergate, but I respect his work, his passion, his dedication and I think that in the grand scheme of things his original Gamergate advocacy is just one stupid decision in an otherwise great career. TB's support for StarCraft 2 alone is sufficient proof of his positive side. Without turning this into a political statement, let's just say that there is a reason people hate online feminists. Yes, sometimes people are sexist and misogynist and unfairly view all of feminism through the lens of a few handpicked examples. But sometimes feminists can be insufferable, will excommunicate you for one slip-up, will call everyone who slightly disagrees with them a reactionary, will consider themselves morally superior to everyone, will dishonestly interpret everything you say, and will carry grudges for years. There is a reason people dismissively talk about call-out culture. They don't deserve most of the hate they get, and certainly Anita Sarkeesian was treated incredibly unfairly and did nothing wrong, but as a political movement it's also a sort of dead end and I think their attitude towards TB is emblematic of this. I should also say that I checked Gamerghazi after TB died and although there were some hateful comments, there were also a lot of people who viewed him positively overall and who did not support the hardline stance. I expected worse, to be honest.

I want this to be a place where people who liked TB can say how much they miss him. If you start talking about his wider impact, you either get a situation where their is an echo chamber of "I can't believe people hated TB, he was literally an angel" OR Critics don't hold their tongues, and we get wall to wall arguments about how someone who is dead is a jerk or not, and I'm not sure that's the original intent of the thread.

I expected worse, to be honest. Don't know what the whole debate was about in essence, but thanks for the write-up and summary. I feel TB's message always was "be a better consumer" and rarely dabbled into other affairs, being clear on the fact that a one-off commentary will rarely influence others to be a better person as a whole. As far as militant feminism goes... well, a lot is being misconstrued and the forbes article actually debunks a bit on that. Unrelated: Check out further reactions to the moderate stance of for example Annemunition (spoilers: more hate. And yes, this should be another thread, as people hating people still shouldn't be the norm). Yeah, absolutist positions will drive people away and are unreasonable and unfair, but (to keep it short) what's the (preferable) alternative? Edit: Added very short reply top. Thanks for locking the thread. Again, the essential: best wishes to TB's family&friends--let's focus on what counts
