World Electronic Sports Games 2017: Main Event

The $400,000 WESG main event continued in Haikou, China, as sixteen players competed in the final group stage with playoff spots on the line.

Fifteen-year-old Italian Zerg player (Wiki)Reynor was the star of the final group stage, adding top foreign Terran (Wiki)SpeCial to his list of victims in what is turning into his breakout tournament. Meanwhile, (Wiki)Dark, (Wiki)Classic, and (Wiki)Maru upheld Korea's reputation as StarCraft's dominant nation, remaining undefeated in series (18-0 overall) in the tournament. (Wiki)uThermal came closest to giving the Koreans pause, dragging Classic into a tight, five game series.

The eight-player playoff bracket has been drawn, and the age-old Korea vs foreigners storyline is set to unfold. In bygone years, a Korean sweep of the top three spots would have been a foregone conclusion in an international tournament. The next few days will tell us how much StarCraft has changed—or if it has changed at all.

Although it is unlikely, It would be great that one of the non koreans beat one of the koreans. A little upset to spice things up.
Usually I would give Scarlett the highest chances here. But currently she seems not to be 100% on top of her game.

But still this will be an interesting tournament.

I think Serral is the most likely as he has done it recently

I don't know what you're watching, the number of koreans looks pretty constant from Ro32 to Ro8 and probably will stay constant until the Ro4 bracket

I hope Reynor can take a game off Maru. That would already be quite an accomplishment in itself.

Just imagine if Wunderkind Reynor would actually beat Maru... that'd be a break out tourney alright. Anyhow, the upper bracket looks really interesting to follow (even if Reynor should fail to pull off a miracle)!

Reynor may defeat Maru, given Reynor has been doing well. Maybe Elazer can defeat Classic.

There were barely any top Protoss and Terran players in this tournament, while pretty much every top Zerg from outside Korea was in it. With how WESG awards its seeds a lot of the early rounds are players getting completely outclassed, unless you really think that Has is better than Serral and that Strike and Hut are better than Scarlett.

To be fair, every top terran and protoss outside of korea was in that tourney as well. the list isnt very long, though...
