With the GSL Round of 16 complete and the WCS Circuit on hiatus, some of the best players in the world, foreigners and Koreans alike, flocked to Katowice, Poland for the IEM World Championships Open Bracket. Played over two days, the first one featured Brackets 1 and 2, with the top three finishers of each earning a spot in the main event this weekend.
Bracket 1 kicked off without any major surprises, as TY, Maru, Ryung and Stats sent their foreign opponents to the losers bracket as they made their way to the qualifying matches. TY and Maru became the first players to move on to the Round Robin groups after picking up wins over Ryung and Stats respectively. While Ryung navigated past DnS in the losers’ bracket, Stats was upset by souL, ending the Splyce Protoss’ bid for a second consecutive final. The Polish Terran was unable to carry that momentum in the final qualifying match, however, as he was 2-0’d by Ryung, bringing the first bracket to a close.
Next up was Bracket 2. The opening round featured a surprise as Guru knocked Scarlett down to the losers' bracket. Solar qualified without picking up a loss, while Serral only dropped a game to Trust on his way to the World Championships proper. Down in the losers' bracket, Scarlett charged to the final qualifying match, where she was met by TRUE, who had just knocked out Creator. The ZvZ against Scarlett went to a full three games, but it was TRUE who emerged on top, making him the final player to make it through on Day 1.
Maru, Ryung, TY, Solar, Serral and TRUE advance.
The IEM Katowice Open Brackets will return with Bracket 3 and 4 at Tuesday, Feb 27 10:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)

A good start compared to last year (level of play, no BYE, a big upset etc).

Some great games today, and that's even coming in halfway through. Got some vods to watch (I hear Maru vs Stats was really good?)
Katowice living up to the hype so far, and hopefully it stays that way

If you enjoy no rush 20 you'll enjoy Stats vs Maru

I still cannot believe that Stats got knocked out on the first day of IEM Katowice... He's probably going to get super wasted tonight... :/

This is in OP "The IEM Katowice Open Brackets will return with Bracket 3 and 4 at Saturday, Feb 27 12:00am EST (GMT-05:00)" :-/
Liquipedia states: Brackets 3 & 4 on 27th February (Tues) Groups (Ro24) on 1st & 2nd March (Thu & Fri) Ro12 & Ro6 on 3rd March (Sat) Top 4 on 4th March (Sun)
/e I swear OP changed ;-X

It makes me a bit sad that groups A and B will play before the crowd gets there on the 2nd. Considering group C could be a ZvZfest and groups A and B look the most stacked.
(I'm really just salty that Dark vs Inno is in group B)

I've got an ML exam that day and am salty as fuck about it

TRUE just really didn't want another "S" name to get out.

How are they placing open bracket qualifiers into the groups? I want to know what groups these players are in!

The groups will be drawn after the open bracket is done.

Scarlett really deserved being ahead of Maru in the PR

People who put Stats on their power rank shouldn't talk.
|
Scarlett's ZvZ was really looking onpoint, however it is just that TRUE was being TRUE and did his things which gave him the victory.
|
will the next bracket see only protos pass? first bracket only T second Bracket only Z
|
Sad to see scarlett fall but she gave a good fight and knocked out 2 Koreans before falling
|
Maru advances! !!!1 JOY lots of JOY!! Jin air O's for Y'all (yes it's an acronym...)
|
Maru vs Stats thought game three on Neon Violet. Probably the best game i watched in such a long time. literally every tech was so fucking sick. When Maru was on the retreat and the BC's warped in to save his army i got such a raging nerd boner.
|
With Scarlett out the event loses quite some fan appeal. Now, the Koreans will rule above all. So go Jin Air.

27 Feb is today. The OP just had a typo originally: they put Saturday, 27 Feb when they meant Tuesday. It's already fixed.

At least Stats lost to unscounted proxies. Didn't Scarlett just get out ZvZ'd ?

Wow Scarlett out... all foreigners hopes now on SpeCial/Major i guess.

Man, I was really rooting for Scarlett to go far in this series.

*ahem* Serral :D

Woah surprising results indeed.

It's rare that a non-Korean stays dominant for a while. But usually the top Korean players stay dominant for longer periods of time.
