The first day of IEM: Shanghai saw Groups A and B being played simultaneously. The four players who managed to advance would have a day to compose themselves, scout their potential opponents and prepare for the Round of 8 to be played on Saturday.

http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/IEM_Season_XII_-_Shanghai

The first match of the day saw (Z)Dark take on (T)Bunny in Group A. Dark's roach timing felt flat in the first game, but he clawed back and took the match after rushing to ultralisks on Proxima Station.

(T)TY took a quick 2-0 against (Z)PenguiN, the highlight being when his hellions killed 31 drones to ice up the second game.

TY fell 30 workers behind to a ling/roach attack in game one against Dark, but sterling defense and constant attacks allowed him to come back and eventually take the match 2-0.

Bunny kept his tournament alive as his superior mechanics and crisp play overwhelmed the less experienced PenguiN.

Bunny capitalized on a poor opening from Dark in the first game, but Dark managed to build a head of steam in game two before decimating Bunny's mech play in game three.

Meanwhile, in Group B, (Z)iAsonu took a game with inventive swarm host play, but (P)Stats stood firm to move onto the winner's match.

(Z)Rogue's expert play against mech allowed him to defeat (T)GuMiho in a grueling three game series.

Stats' tempests got him off to a good start, but a pair of all-ins put Rogue over the top, sending him to the Round of 8.

GuMiho dropped a surprising game one against iAsonu. The Chinese Zerg repeated the feat with a ravager rush that sent GuMiho packing.

iAsonu threw away a heavy advantage in game one against Stats, but salvaged his tournament with a pair or roach all-ins that pushed Stats to the brink and eventually broke him.

i hope iAsonu take this thing. Coming back from that ego crushing game 1 loss to Stats showed a lot of resilience.

iAsonu showing really great play, even in his loss to Stats where he did have an advantage he still slugged it out in an almost 30-minute game vs a GSL champion. Also attacking into cannons/PO/storm/archons with lings/SH is not very easy, especially on low eco like he was.

Hopefully he can continue this momentum, he just cleared a really tough group so I could see him getting far with enough luck.
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

Extremely impressive performance by IA, albeit with a heavy reliance on allins. Whether he can continue that performance now that his opponents are forewarned of his style, time alone will tell.

Still, there's no denying that knocking out the GSL Season 1 Champion and GSL Season 2 Champion is a feat worthy of recognition.

Those were some really sick games by iA! That was a lot like Snute's performance knocking out 2 top protosses a few years back, although doing it in 2 different matchups is a whole other level!

Anyone know where I can find VODs of the iAsonu vs Gumiho games?

Does anyone know whether the ro8 will be Rogue vs Dark and iA vs TY? Or will it be redrawn?

There's no denying that IA played amazingly, but allins and so forth are a lot weaker if you know they are coming. I can't imagine the other Koreans aren't a bit freaked out about Gumiho+Stats both getting knocked out by IA.

Or they watched the games and wonder how Gumiho and Stats managed to lose to him. I can't imagine that he takes anyone else unaware again unless that player plays arrogantly.

Arrogance against foreigners is pretty normal and kind of justified for top Koreans, but this time Stats/Gumiho paid a steep price for it.

i chalk it up to..."styles make fights" combined with them not knowing iAsonu
say A beats B and.. B defeats C.
when A and C fight... its not a sure thing that A beats C.

An all-inner is being praised for his "impressive" resut? No wonder this game is going to hell.

I'm sorry, but under what circumstance could eliminating the two most recent GSL Code S champions be deemed anything but impressive?
