I actually used something resembling a system to rank them. Zest, ByuN and Solar just barely missed the top 10 because of their early GSL failures.

Basically, a point system where I first judged all the players I took into consideration for top 10 of their race (mostly Code S players). I judged their vT, vZ and vP skills (by results and how the games looked) comparatively to the other players of their race. Then I added in additional points for how well the players' skills and the current meta align (at least in my eyes), e.g. a player with high skill and confidence against Terran in a meta that will cause him to play many Terrans would get more points than someone who struggles against Terran. Then I fucked over some people by deducting points for early exits in GSL because I felt like it.
I took the top 15 by scores, broke ties in ways that may or may not make sense and narrowed it down to top 10. And as I said, Zest, ByuN and Solar missed out on top 10 exactly because I punished them for dropping out of GSL.
Despite all the tomfoolery it came out a lot closer to reality than what I thought it would be.
I see, i think having some kind of fixed point system is pretty good actually. While the weighing may be off, at least it affects every player about the same. And yeah your list looks decent i think, have to think about mine soonish :D

How far back are you judging? I don't see how TY comes out ahead of Maru and ByuL at all. Those two have him beat in terms of sample size, level of competition, and imo they both look better overall.

I ignored everything that happened before January. It's no longer indicative of their actual form. That's also why Stats is so far down.
As for that particular set of players, well, it ended up as a 3-way tie on my Sheet of Judgement™. I didn't think I'd be allowed to put 3 players at rank 4 so I broke the tie. But honestly the exact order of those 3 doesn't really matter to me.

I didn't understand why Maru had such a high ranking as well... But somehow I ended up on the liquipedia pages of GSL Loser Strikes Back and well... he deserves the hype xD. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/GSLTV_The_Loser_Strikes_Back/Week_3#Bracket Too bad we don't see 8+ maps matches often, it's amazing how bad someone who is mentally broken from a 3-0 or 4-0 loss will play when they have to keep playing after being destroyed... Some manage to fight back however (Patience vs INnovation, from 1-4 to 5-6) and it's amazing as well.
ByuN had a nice run in IEM qualifier, I don't regret leaving him in the top 10 even tho he lost a lot recently.

For all of LotV, sure. But these rankings are always based more of recent results. For me, I think patch 3.8 is the most reasonable point to begin at. It was a major patch, the holiday season gave us less to go on to determine the form of the players, and a little over 2 months isn't too large of a period to judge current form imo.
Even just examining WESG, I think Maru looked better. Sure he lost the final (and barely at that) but he had better run throughout. He dropped no maps and faced tougher foreigners leading up to the final.
edit: Dark is way higher than soO in my ranking, though I think soO and Inno will be advancing from group Ohana in the GSL. soO is too good with tactics in series to be counted out. edit2: ByuL is malperforming and Solar is stepping up his game.

Even just examining WESG, I think Maru looked better. Sure he lost the final (and barely at that) but he had better run throughout. He dropped no maps and faced tougher foreigners leading up to the final.
Did he really though? I mean TY only lost one map to Showtime (excluding a couple irrelevent games vs Kela), but won an extra game vs Maru in the finals. Although Maru did go through Nerch/scarlett/Showtime which were harder opponents, I believe TY would likely 3-0 most of those as well anyway.
edit: maru did look more dominant against the foriegners but thats his style of play showing. TY is always the more careful player
