Interview conducted by Lee So Ra of Daily eSports
◆Flash had already decided to retire six months ago For a while now, Flash had already made a decision to retire. He contemplated retiring ever since May, right after 2015 SPL concluded. 9 years of pent-up fatigue from pro gaming suddenly swept over him.
Flash: There's no particular reason. I just all of a sudden discovered myself being exhausted. In the past, regardless of how hard the work was, it was fun to play the game and I enjoyed playing on stage. However, I later on discovered myself not smiling at all. It wasn't just because of my lack of results.
If you were the top performing player in a certain field for 9 years, I bet you can understand his feelings. Not even that, if you are someone who pursued something for 9 years without looking left, right, or even behind you and just kept looking ahead then I'm sure you would understand Flash's statement of being, "exhausted".
Many fans are assuming that KT Rolster reduced Flash's pay in the next contract negotiation because of his results but this is not true. It was already 2 months ago when he stated that he would be retiring. Flash didn't even take part in this year's contract negotiation.
Flash: Seems like there are some misunderstandings. KT always did their best for me. When I told them that I wanted to retire, they didn't want to let me go at first (laughs). I had to persuade them with sincerity. I told them I wanted to rest a while. Eventually they decided to accept my decision without any further statements. That was the moment when I teared up. These were the people who truly understood how hard I had worked and didn't need me to explain myself further.
Because Flash wanted to retire after leading his team to victory for Proleague, he worked hard even after talking about retirement with the team.

◆What will Flash do next? Perhaps even pursue LoL?
Flash: This is not a joke. I really plan on just resting for now. But there probably will be many options for me later on. I could stream just like Bisu, or I can be a coach like Stork. There's also a possibility that I may decide to pursue something that has nothing to do with eSports. Another option is that I could pursue being a LoL player. The point is, nothing is certain for now. However, whatever I decide to do, I can promise my fans that I won`t be putting on an embarrassing form. Whatever it is that I decide to do, I will be letting the eSports fans know first so I hope people will not forget me till then. I would also like to say thank you and sorry to my fans for all the help that enabled me to reach where I am now. Whenever I faced difficult times, it was the fans' support that allowed me to survive and endure. I will never forget this. I sincerely thank you all!

Thanks for the interview.

From his matches in SC2 Proleague, you can just tell he rarely got excited over the games. Victories were not expressed with much emotion. Defeats seemed like "meh, oh well".
Waiting on him to happily stream some BW. I do not think LoL suits Flash, but he will work hard on anything.

Towards the end he looked devastated after every loss.

Really? Sure, a defeat sucks, but it looked more like resignation more than anything. Regardless, Flash tried his hand at SC2, and it did not quite work out results-wise. He deserves to do something that is more fun for him. He stayed around long enough to help Blizzard advertise SC2 one last time by playing a few LotV games.

whoa, we have a mind-reader here.
Sorry, but he said nothing ill about SC2. Not even once.

I would think the smartest thing would be to stream on Afreeca until his military service, then go into coaching or anything else he wants post-military.

Considering he's stated his intentions to lead KT to greatness as head coach at some point, I'd assume SC2 is still fun to him.

glhf Flash He wants to start his military service in like 3 years. I feel like he could do more in that time than just stream.

I never said that Flash said anything bad about SC2... o_o
Not necessarily saying that he does have bad thoughts about SC2, but he has/had a responsibility as a SC2 iconic pro-gamer to not say anything bad. Just like many other progamers out there (Korean or not), he has voiced concerns/complaints about SC2 (balance and design-level). That does not mean he did not enjoy playing SC2 for some period.
All I said was that he deserves to do something that is more fun for him, as playing SC2 does not seem to be fun for him now (not always).

Unfortunately, I'm going to go ahead and temporarily lock this thread. Thank you Thouhastmail for finding this interview and for translating it, but I see errors in the translations already and if what Flash says becomes misconstrued, we may be looking at damage that is difficult to reverse.

Translation errors have been fixed and the thread has now been reopened. I just want everyone to know that Thouhastmail did not do anything wrong by translating this interview and by posting it. I merely just wanted to make sure Flash's views were represented accurately so that he didn't receive any negative backlash for something he didn't actually say.

in my opinion reading between the lines sc2 is just not fun for him i watched his bw video and u can see he enjoyed sc1 when he plays sc2 no enjoyment
|
Ahh..........I thought things will change when LOTV is released..
Yes , change! but not the way I expected . .
|
Classy exit and great guy. Must have banked quite a lot after his successful career also. Go and enjoy yourself young man. The world is your oyster.
|
Good thing Flash willl not embarrash himself playing LOTV, sad thing he had to retire, wonder what life path hell choose from now on.

Not trying to be rude and I am not affiliated with the original poster at all but I compared what it says now to what I read earlier and it is pretty much identical.. the same statements were made and came across the exact same, just with slightly different / less words. Feels like the lock earlier was a little dramatic.

why not just take a break like soulkey did instead of a full retirement

I can't wait for Flash to come back as a Hearthstone pro. Imagine the APM!

He should be exhausted after playing 8 years in a row, starting from the age of 15... I hope he comes back as a coach. Maybe side by side with Reach?

Flash to co-host Remax w/ Desrow

I hope he doesn't rush into anything. He should take like 6 months off at least.

I want to see a video montage of Flash to that "remember the name" song
|
most of the progamers who play these games do it because they loved the game. It felt like Flash didn't have his heart in SC2 like he did with BW.
|
I like how he directly says the game was still fun for him and some people just come in and say he wasn't enjoying the game.
Enjoy your rest Flash! Then come coach KT to glory.

After reading this, I think Flash made the right choice. Best of luck to him.

Actually I read it wrong, my bad, he says in the past it was fun.

embarrass yourself flash!!! you deserve it.
|
After reading this you see that retirement was probably the best move for him. Best of luck to FlaSh!
|
I can't read his interview over my tears. No insult would be greater for sc2 than Flash leaving us and switching to LoL.
|
Tho I still believe there weren't any mistranslations, I would accept it; cause this one is rephrased more neatly.
|
I summary , I think that he is just burnt out of work. He acomplished a lot, but on the back of super hardchore work ethic, and he never almost besides the time after his wrist operation.
|
Honestly impressed he was able to go this many years of such hard work. It's no joke, and other players have taken long breaks or quite long before it reached 9 years. Hope he finds something he likes to do in the next 3 years, and I would love it if it was esports related
|
Honestly, 8 years of non stop hard work in the big leagues, not to mention the hard work to even make it to a kespa team makes him wanting a break understandable. It's amazing how much he did and how much effort he put in for so long. I just hope he takes a long break and finds what he wants to do. And whether it's a comeback to starcraft, streaming BW, coaching, or something totally unrelated, I wish the best for him.
|
Hehe, he mentions bisu so I hope that subconsciously pulls him in that direction like I mentioned! :D
Glad to see he is making strong willed decisions. People like him end up going far in whatever they do~!

Flash APM so high, he can coin out a Twilight Drake and get a +1 bonus for the coin.
And I say "coin out a Twilight Drake" because let's be real, Flash plays Handlock.

exactly my thoughts, I cant even process the thought of that. Even him saying or considering smth like that breaks my heart. Hopefully he didnt mean it that way, I dunno edit: I see the translation is better now, looks official, so I guess he said that after all I think Flash going to LoL would be really silly I dont think he is iserously considering it.
|
He literally says in the interview he still enjoyed playing SC2, and several people in this thread comment how they think he doesn't like SC2. The anti-SC2 crowd on this forum will never cease to amaze me with their brilliant conclusions.
|
Flash gonna be the next Hearthstone bonjwa, mark my words
|
But there probably will be many options for me later on. I could stream just like Bisu, or I can be a coach like Stork. There's also a possibility that I may decide to pursue something that has nothing to do with eSports. Another option is that I could pursue being a LoL player. He is just listing his options, mentioning becoming a LoL player even after saying that he could do something totally unrelated to eSports. So don't shit your pants guys Also he says that nothing is certain for now, so speculation seems rather pointless to me and he should just enjoy his break for now
|
I think most of these big bw players are wanting a break. Jd is probably enjoying his life being less stressful and travelling more to meet his fans etc
|
hmm, Flash can't live long without SC. It's just it's been shoved down his throat for a bit too long. He should take some time to recover and then go back to LotV.

Hopefully he will never come to LOTV, but BW... that would be exciting .

God removes his white cloak and halo unveiling red leather pants and horns on his head.
I hope he takes a deserved break and becomes a coach for KT SC2 division. Anything other than that or BW will make me sad. But the man has earnerd to do what ever he likes. No need to humor his fans anymore.
|
He just couldn't hang in sc2 and his skill level was overrated tbh. He will never compare to players like MVP and Life who dominated.
|
In starcraft 2 yes. In broodwar mvp was the pawn and Flash the king, different games that's all

League of Legends? What a way to go that would be...

Wrathsc2 being the BW troll and SuperFanBoy the sc2 troll :x.
Good interview, I hope that he will stay in esports, LoL would probably not fit him but coaching can be awesome.

I want FlaSh to do somehting with SC2 or BW in the future either one would be fine!
Haha I still have this fantasy of mine, where LotV changes everything (which it won't) and becomes infinitely better than it ever was, it grows again and Bisu and FlaSh return and start dominating, thats how I keep myself from crying myself to sleep after FlaSh announced his retirement

But seriously speaking, I was thinking that 3 years is way too long until he joins the army. I think that he should just take a big break from sc2 of a year or so and then come back to LotV. Damnit I hope somehow he reconsiders it

oh man if he goes to LoL i might watch the LoL scene

Flash man, whatever you decide to do I'm sure you'll excel at it, with the bank you've made from progaming and your insane discipline, you're gunna keep being a winner in life.
Best wishes, always your fan.

What makes you think he can even make it to pro scene in LoL? many have tried before him only to end up failing. LoL requires certain skills that players didn't need for starcraft.. being good at starcraft doesn't equate to being good at LoL.

Must be Bisu stream, earn many .

He's going to play brood war and for the first time ever I will experience the inexorable force of the THE ULTIMATE WEAPON.
