It's happening, SBENU is sponsoring StarTale!

It is planned to recruit some additional players as well.

Sonic, head of SBENU, said that StarTale has some great potential, as was seen in Proleague 2015 Round 1.

I knew it, either ST or Prime were going to be sponsored by SBENU and with the DRG pick up by ST it was pretty much confirmed.

This says Sbenu is a naming sponsor of Startale and Startale will change its name to Sbenu in proleague and GSL.

Mmmm not neccesarily, they didn't use the specific word they use (창단) when a big corporation buys out a team and makes it theirs. Sbenu is ST's name sponsor which is a big deal, but it appears to be a level below what Jin Air did with Team 8.

It seems clear the implication is that they are a title sponsor, not the actual owners of the team.

to be fair T8 didn't really have a name to begin with it was all placeholder anyway.

might be something akin to hite buying the naming rights for OGN Sparkyz back in the day.

But T8 was run by KeSPA wasn't it? Naturally their staff existed only within that framework

The Jin Air coach now was a different coach from the T8 coach they had if I remember correctly.

This is like the most perfect sponsorship in the world.

Startale is the last Korean org to not join KESPA, so it's literally like a nod to that, I would think.

But Mvp and Prime are not affiliated with KeSPA?

How specifically does that kind of thing work? Don't teams just participate in proleague but not actually affiliate themselves with the stricter regulations that the bigger teams follow?

Funnily enough "StarTale Sbenu" sounds not that far from "StartStyle Sbenu" d:
Pretty good news, although it probably signs Prime's death sentence.

Didn't MVP and Prime join KeSPA a few years back? Basically when they left eSF.

Anyway, good news for StarTale. Maybe they turn out to be a contender for the 4th playoff spot. Probably not, because the top 4 are just... insanely strong... but who knows.

In late 2013, MVP, IM, Prime, and Najin (LoL organization) joined Kespa.

In the last year or so, Kespa has made it so you dont necessarily need to join them to participate in Proleague.

That is what I find confusing. Don't by joining KeSPA you also agree to a lot of the restrictions in playing like online tournaments and things of that nature. (which MVP and Prime participate in regularly)

Pretty good news, although it probably signs Prime's death sentence.

Honestly that's why I didn't like that Prime Sbenu rumor, it's too much akin to making fun of the poor kid for being poor.

I think they've gotten a lot more lenient since 2013, the only real major hurdle with Kespa and like the foreign scene anymore, is that those teams get their money with exposure from Proleague, so it used to be so rare to see Kespa players partiicpate in foreign events, which was really a disservice considering that just wrecks their chances to accumulate WCS points (at least before this year)

Thanks, although I do find it a bit wierd the only online tournament we've seen the big teams (kt, skt, etc) was TB's Shoutcraft Invitational.

I saw this on Sonic's FB feed an hour ago.

Sonic started to save Brood War; now he's saving esports. He'll save elephants and rhinos and the whole humanity soon at this rate.

if I don't see DRG filming ads for shoes with kpop girls, I'm going to be very disappointed

I bet ST wish they had secured this sponsorship in time to keep Life, though.

I think it'd be pretty cool if somehow there was a deal in place to sell some sbenu shoes through the TL store or something. maybe a limited run.

$100 is about the price you would pay for Nike or some other popular brand for a nice pair. The Nike shoes I'm wearing right now were like $110 USD

No that's not expensive for U.S. sneakers, ~$100 seems average. But I suppose I'm not the best source for that since I wear cowboy boots

Life is overrated in team leagues. He's still good, but not that good. Only had a 5-4 last round and this round isn't much better with respect to who he faced. Despite all the hype, KT didn't even make the round finals and almost didn't make the playoffs. Not to mention Stats is the clear star of that team. Losing Life obviously hurt ST, but it shouldn't have mattered to the extent of a 0-7. It was Leenock also not playing as much as he should have nor up to his round 1 level where he was doing very well.

If Leenock gets in gear again, DRG picks it up and Bomber decides to give a damn, they should be fine. Probably won't win any rounds, but might make another playoff.

How do you figure SBENU is responsible for half the sponsorship in SC2? They are heavily involved, but are they really making up half the Korean SC2 sponsorship?

This is so fucking cool. I mean, knowing who Sonic was in 2013/14 -> the guy who had all the remnants of the BW scene on his shoulder and carried like a boss.

Now he supports both scenes in every way possible, that guy is insane!

And by which computations does it make it half the money invested?

Don't ask me, I didn't say it. Probably computations that ignore WCS, Blizzcon and IEM .

Without Life they had a 0-7 in PL. This is more important than a playoff with a different roster imho

Congratulation to ST, this is of course a big news, but I think that DRG can't replace Life (probably nobody can).
Let's see what will happen!

The new TL question, Where is Bomber? (I've been asking this since December)

At the beginning of Proleague was said that Bomber is the coach of the team, and will not play very much

You would think he would have made more than 2 appearances considering their round 2 performance. They needed him more than ever.

Sure, it's nice that he's pumping lots of money into e-sports, but it's also dangerous if it's reliant on SBENU. They aren't quite Red Bull yet, who can afford to have a massive marketing budget, so long term hopefully other people will do the league/competition sponsoring as well.

JAGW poached champion form Maru after his OSL win and literally gutted Prime. Wonder who SBENU is gonna gut... they already took Myungsik... maybe it's time for Creator. It's only fair after losing Life. 2 for 1 deal.

Wow, the remainder of the year in SPL is going to be so sick. Next year seems to be even more promising. Startale and MVP picking up some big names to up their game and bring some more equality between teams. Hopefully something good happens to Prime and they stop being a punching bag and ez pts for the rest :S

Of course great news for ST and congratz again to SBENU, but imo it is not a good news for Korean Sc2. Whatever the market, if ONE BRAND, and in that case not a huge one (Sbenu is of course a successfull brand but not a major billion dollar company which can dominate its copetitors) is the only investor on a specific market, that just means that there is not a lot of other investors interested. These multiple sponsoring just means that, except a glorious and highly respectable FAN of SC, no major brand wants to put its money on a medium/small Korean SC team. Furthermore, the fact that a small/medium firm can by itself sponsor so many things probably means the sponsor fee has become pretty low (and the sponsor fee of a team/sport/whatever is a pretty good indicator of the health of this market)

This news is good for ST ans Korean SC on short term, but not a good indicator for SC esport on the long term

I don't think that's the case. Sbenu is a multi million dollar company, although truth be told, theres probably not too many investors interested. It's been five years and it's taken this long to get one NEW korean organization ( I guess Jinair counts, but they only got a title sponsor when they picked up 2 lol teams). Sonic isn't the biggest SC2 fan as he's said in the past, and the fact he founded the multi million dollar company and sponsors the premier League of Legends tournament, says they have a decent marketing budget.

At the end of the day, it's a net gain for SC2.

Kinda hard though, since I won't find Sbenu shoes in the store in Germany and ordering a new brand online will always result in the wrong size. I only order Nikes since I know the exact size from experience and every brand seems to use their own size chart :/. Also in Asia sizes tend to be a bit smaller anyway, so no I would have no idea what to get.

It may be true, although at least in Korea itself sc2's popularity at the end of last year was supposedly at its highest point ever (from the proleague ratings particularly)

Shame April 1st is already done, else we could have done "Sbenu buys TL.net" and had a redesign for a day .

I wonder what this means for the team as a whole though. Sure, they probably get money, but will Sonic have some saying in important decisions now?
It's not really his team though (as far as i understood it, reading this thread)

they're kinda expensive -- would you be willing to pay like $80+ for sneakers ?

Is that a lot of money in the US for sneakers? I would in a heartbeat, if they were good quality and cool brand

No that's not expensive for U.S. sneakers, ~$100 seems average. But I suppose I'm not the best source for that since I wear cowboy boots

Yeah, I guessed that Wax was a nerd who had no taste in shoes : P But wait, you only wear cowboy boots..?

Do u not think there's a trade off? Just because he's still doing stuff for bw doesn't mean him sponsoring sc2 isn't moving attention away. Of course I feel that this viewpoint is imbecilic, but there is a point

Hope they'll be rocking some SBENU gear from now on. (It would be a better fit for JinAir coz Maru could flash those sneakers in his hand whenever finishing a game tho )

when hes putting himself into bringing in new blood for BW then there is absolutely nothing that can say that hes moving attention away from BW.

SC2=money
BW=passion

gotta need the money to feed the passion.

For me, the ups are obviously everything he does for BW, and the downs are his support for SC2. Because it's not just any random game competing with BW, it's the game that is being pushed by the people who tried to gut the BW scene to make room for SC2.

Given what Sonic was able to do for BW with less experience and money, I shudder to think what he might do now for SC2, when he has more of both. At the very least he will delay the inevitable fate of SC2 in Korea, but, Sonic being Sonic, he might actually succeed. And that would be bad for the BW scene, which is why it's a "down" for me.

I love BW and as long as there is content being made no matter how big or small it is I will do my best to follow it.

And as far as I can tell sonic can't affect SC2 as a game directly and when the game itself struggles with problems you need not worry about it taking the viewers away, sonic can do a lot of things, but making SC2 as entertaining as BW is not one of them.

And as far as I can tell sonic can't affect SC2 as a game directly and when the game itself struggles with problems you need not worry about it taking the viewers away, sonic can do a lot of things, but making SC2 as entertaining as BW is not one of them.

(emphasis mine)

You know, I actually hadn't thought of that, and it's very a comforting thing to hear. Thank you.

Those BW elitists. *facepalm*

its not really elitisim but whatever, I'm just glad I helped out my fellow BW fan.

On the one hand I won't have a vintage, dead team OG cred. On the other I love that this team is alive and is gonna keep on going on. I'll call it a win.

Where I am from 10 bucks for a pair of sneakers is already expensive, 100 is like ripping you off.

Back on topic, happy for StarTale and Bomber, hope we see more great things from all of them in PL as well as in Korean leagues and international events!

...where are you from? $10 for sneakers? i mean, when speaking of sneakers people usually think jordans and nikes, even new balance and none of those are $100 except mid entry level. ripping off, i dont disagree with that but price comes from demand i suppose.

how popular is sbenu in korea, anyone know?

Yes, but their team has no cash to function well enough to really compete.

Sonic is one hell of a guy let's leave it at that. From resurrecting BW to sponsoring the two big Korean SC2 leagues and now rescuing StarTale and recruiting new members he just might be the Jesus of e-sports.

Sonic!!!^^ huh hah!!! But to be honest deep down i'm afraid if this would backfire somehow. Forgive my pessimism but it seems to me that Sonic seems to be saving our scene all by himself in a huge scale at lightning speed. I'm afraid it would all backfire. This is completely my own opinion though. Hope I'm wrong.

Ah. it's a korean b/p sound?

I met someone that keeps asking me how to pronounce korean words/letters. There is no b/p, it's b or p, same with g and k. Two different sounds in korean or english. It's romanization that mess things up.

I detect a difference, and my studies have supported it. In Korean the contrast is between aspirated and not while in English it is between voiced or unvoiced. That is to say, you can aspirate B or P as much or as little as you like or ease of speech demands, but it doesn't change the meaning. But they are distinctly different in that B must be voiced and P much be unvoiced. In Korean it's the opposite, no? ㅍ must be aspirated and ㅂcan't be, but they both generally sound semi-voiced to me.

But since we tent to aspirate P more than B I think there becomes a more obvious way to romanize it.

This becomes difficult for SBENU because we can't really easily say unvoiced S followed by voiced B without a bit of a pause or gap between. But it definitely seems right to aspirate the B less than you would for a typical "sp" even if you aren't voicing it.

both sound aspirated to me. just saying, if its sbenu its 스베누, not 스페누 and the two do not sound the same, similar, yes but only if one does not know how its spelled or never heard such pronunciation. but in this case we do so we can distinguish between b or p, ㅂ or ㅍ. as you say, with S in the front b might sound like p or b/p, but p can be exaggerated to make the difference while b does not. sbenu and spenu are different in english, so should/is in korean.

im no linguists and i guess they're the ones on authority on how korean letters should be spelled with latin but it just irks me when i see something romanized and its pronounced differently than what its suppose to be (at least close as possible), goes both ways too though. like Bennu is an ancient egyptian deity so maybe it sounds different in its original pronunciation...its a never ending cycle

(S for sonic with Bennu for phoenix, hence the logo)

uuhh no question. SBENU actually has a product to sell, and you can see the company grow throughout the years.

Azubu had a godlike ammount of cash and threw it around like it was absolutely nothing.
