Pause and surrender are next to each other on the menu. Some people click the menu rather than pressing the hotkeys. If they are in a rush to leave the game they sometimes misclick and hit pause rather than surrender.

I personnaly use the mouse instead of the hotkey to leave a game (never actually looked what the hotkey is tbh) and once every 100 game I may click on pause instead of leave, but usually click on leave game a split second after....

I thought it was because they missclicked, why bm with a pause when you can just yell at your opponent

think it started because of some bug a while ago?

like if you, as the winner, left the game without unpausing, i think you would get a loss or something

quite a while ago, if a game was paused and both players left it would cause the match to show up much later in history, delaying points from the win/loss.
also some people click surrender instead of hitting N after hitting f10, and sometimes missclick pause instead.

Pause and F10 are right next to each other on the keyboard... I often accidentally hit the pause key when I'm trying to F10+N out

I use hotkeys, just not for quitting the game. It's not like I'm gonna get better if I leave games faster

Previously the pause used to be priority in the UI of SC2 over the victory screen.
It was a glitch/bug/bad feature that was removed afterwards.

Nowadays people tend to pause because of the good ol' BM times or just hitting pause by mistake.

Once upon a time if you paused the game before leaving it didn't give your opponent a victory screen. They would have to press f10 then leave the game themselves (it still counted as a win for them). For people who didn't know this, it was very counterintuitive to have to 'leave' a game they had won.

Blizzard fixed this in a patch ages ago. I doubt it's bm at this point, most likely just misclicks.
