A lot of the match-ups will be really interesting. I'm especially eager to see that Nerchio - NaNiwa clash ![]()

Still, it seems a little bit silly that one match decides who gets into the Tournament where they have 2 lives in the group stage and who gets out. I am consistently underwhelmed with the formats in SC2 Tournaments, I wish some would just do floating triple elimination and rely on a robust seeding of the players. But then there would need to be a good (official) rating system, and that might be hard, since the regions are kind of disjunct with the regionlock and all. Not to mention that I think group play is awful. But I will still watch, since the matches will be good. I am surprised we don't see pro players complaining about the formats, though. I guess they value knowing their possible opponents sooner more than a more fair tournament format.

Given NaNi's recent inactivity Nerchio should be strongly favored but I think NaNiwa is significantly better in preparation for special occasions, whereas Nerchio often is stuck in tunnel vision when it comes to the metagame. Or it might just come down to who better handles mind games ![]()

I don't understand why they changed it.

I think this is a better format, I prefer having matches where there is a lot on the line for every match. $2000 and the notoriety gained is more than enough of a reward for getting through the qualifier, IMO. If you think about it, in most major sports the playoffs are huge high-stakes games after they've been fighting for a really long time to get there. In American football it's even Bo1. This creates a more hype atmosphere for every playoff match since you work the entire season for that one moment. WCS has three seasons a year so I see nothing wrong with it really.
