Let’s start with the most important part of this blog. I am taking a break from StarCraft starting whenever my run in WCS AM Season 1 ends. I am likely to return for LoTV. I don’t quite feel ready to give up on StarCraft just yet.
A few months ago, I posted about a blog about my plans for the rest of 2015. To summarize, I decided to stop commentating all together to focus on improving my play. I stated that if I had not improved significantly by the end of the year, I would be retiring. As is often the case, success is done in shades rather than absolutes. While I did not achieve the level of success I hoped for, I achieved a level of success that I had been unable to obtain for most of 2014. I managed to qualify for IEM San Jose, losing out in the winner’s bracket in a close 2-3 vs Scarlett and triumphing over Violet in the loser’s bracket 3-2, taking the 3rd and final qualified position for the American region. This alone, was a great accomplishment. Days later, at Homestory Cup, I went 1-2 with HyuN, nearly taking the series 2-0 and then defeated Lilbow 2-1 before ultimately being eliminated by Jaedong 0-2. While I did not manage to pass my group at Homestory, I showed a level of play that has eluded me for a long time and went head to head with some of the better players right now.
I continued to train hard for San Jose and for some reasons that I’m not entirely clear on, I played some of the worst games I’ve played in a long time. San Jose was pretty much a total failure in my mind because I failed to play up to my level and went out 0-4 vs Bomber and Super. Of course, my opponents were strong, but there’s no place in this scene for me if I can’t at least play my best, be competitive at LAN events and put on good games. Since then, I’ve been streaming consistently and figuring out where my place will be in the coming year. Overall, I made more progress than I had in a long time, but not enough to re-ignite the reasons I began so fervently down this progamer path in the first place.
After a bit of soul searching and re-negotiation of terms, I settled on a contract that worked well for me and compLexity. I found the answers that I needed in 2014 to justify continuing my career as a progamer. I have been on a path of consistent improvement (except for the blunder of San Jose and a few days preceding it). My practice partners noted on my sudden improvement and the game was quite a bit more fun than it had been in a long time. Despite this, I’m still worn out on StarCraft. I don’t recover from poor play or losses as I would like, and I don’t really want to play a lot of the time. StarCraft has become more of a job than an activity of passion. In order to succeed, I need the inner drive to push myself and constantly try to innovate and topple my opponents. This drive just isn’t with me right now. I play a set amount of hours each day, and when I’m done (usually glad that I am), I pursue other activities. Part of this loss of motivation stems from the declining popularity of StarCraft. It has become harder to play as nearly every single non-pro gamer friend I have has stopped playing the game all together. StarCraft is no longer an activity that brings my friends together. Perhaps if I lived in a team house long term I wouldn’t feel this way. Even though I enjoyed my time in the ROOT house quite a bit, I think time off will help more than simply trying to push through. Especially because the coming months will be one of the best times to take a break.
LoTV, with its slew of changes both to balance and how the game is fundamentally played (starting workers, different resources per base), will be a nice reset that will reward those who are active early and adapting to what’s new. As such, my current plan is to continue to play StarCraft on a consistent basis until I am eliminated from WCS Season 1 of this year. When I am eliminated, I will begin a break from competitive StarCraft play that will probably last until I have access to LoTV beta. While on break, I may do some commentary at my discretion, but will mostly be away from the competitive StarCraft scene. You may see me streaming or doing other related activities besides competing.
As always, thanks to compLexity and our great sponsors: Creative & Sound Blaster, CYBERPOWERPC, Newegg, Corsair Gaming, Twitch, DXRacer and Pwnit Wear.

One of my favorite NA players throughout SC2 history, always been a fan.
Hope he goes far in WCS then!
QXC's gameplay and casting are great, hope he get really really far in WCS. GL!!
I am really a total fan of QXC, he has sparks of pure brilliance in game that is so amazing to see and very rare for foreigners.
His commentating is even more impressive and shows how deep his understanding of the game is, nothing hypes me up more that hearing QXCs passion leak out when he gets excited for some build or other.
Take a good long break but I reaaally hope you come back, you are a sorely needed talent, personality and role model in SC2.
I'm glad he's giving himself more time and opportunity to make it work. He's an exciting player and personality, and I hope he finds what he needs to keep his mental state strong and dedicated.
Sometimes you just need to take a month off to regain the passion.
I'm a little surprised. QXC has looked really good recently. If this means we have more qxc commentary, then I'll atually be looking forward to it.
First ToD, now qxc... But with the reasons stated, it's a reasonable decision to take a break. I also believe that we have reached a point where we will see more announcements like this coming soon. However, best of luck to qxc in S1 and afterwards in whatever he's doing!
This is a sad day for StarCraft... I've been a fan of his for a long time.
great loss for the foreign sc2 scene. hope to see a quick comeback
QXC is the man, all the best in whatever he does in the meantime. I can't wait to see the builds he concocts in LOTV. Right after he gets silver in WCS Foreigner S1.Sorry, I love QXC, but cant root against Polt.
He's QXC, you've probably heard of him.
SCAN THE ISLAND!
GL with whatever you do <3.
I knew very little about QXC, but I've become a fan after I've heard a few commentaries done by him. Great guy. It is better to take a break and regain passion than to get frustrated more and more and lose all the passion that is left. Looking forward to see you stream LotV beta when it comes out, because most of the time you guys are the ones that play the beta and try out new stuff while vast majority of Koreans are still focusing on tournaments.
Good luck!
Cool, a very reasoned and level-headed approach. I'd recommend stepping away from gaming entirely. Maybe just go on walks, go out partying, just connect to the world in a tangible way. I feel like it's necessary for a healthy balance. You seem like a smart guy with real potential in SC2. Hope LotV works out for you. But most importantly, I hope you enjoy what you do!
Another passenger on the "LOTV train". Hope he does well in both WCS and LOTV.
Sad to see but I'm glad to see he'll be back! Good luck and enjoy the time off!
i remember that series vs bomber. it was heartbreaking to see how even tho qxc had his builds well mapped out (especially on merry, with the Raven tank drop) he was just getting swept aside as bomber was just playing better in every aspect of the game (similar gas first openings and while nothing happened, bomber was just ahead).
Btw, he will be remembered for:" you do THE BUILD. yeah and then you follow it up with stim and vikings? - Your followup litteraly is to win the game" -qxc on the infamous 2 tank 8 marine Raven drop in TvT
As such, my current plan is to continue to play StarCraft on a consistent basis until I am eliminated from WCS Season 1 of this year. That just blows my mind. Maybe it is brutal honesty, but if you already given up on the inside, why even go on?
I love QXC, and I hope this quitter no pressure attitude works wonders for him (I mean he gets really worked up about losses, so maybe it is exactly what he needs), but man, I really don't know. Here is to him not being eliminated but winning this damn thing! Man up.

I hope qxc wins WCS now, always been a fan of his american ways. :D
It sucks to have a job and not feel good about doing it.
Hope LOTV brings his passion back.
But he is going to win WCS S1 and wont be able to stop
gogo qxc, always been my favorite progamer. the original island scanner!
Really sad to hear this. It broke my heart hearing his interview when he talked about losing and not performing as expected. He was without a doubt my favorite NA player together with State and Scarlett. I think he did the right thing in really trying to improve and drop casting, and I think he succeeded. Damn he's been good lately, and I'm really sad to read that it wasn't good enough for himself.
I hope to see a comeback in LOTV, better than ever before.
Gogo QXC!

You made a total fan of me in 2014 and I wish you the best in all your endevours. Ideally they'll be sc2 related as I think you're a superb talent.
I can totally relate to wanting a break from work, I really like this decision. I hope he has fun and looking forward to seeing qxc in LoTV
Good thing he is going to win S1 then.
I'm sure many keyboards feel safe tonight
Enough with the troll, seriously you re an amazing player, I wish you the best for whatever you'll go for! I wish I could play a TvP like you do, I spent a lot of time watching your streams and enjoyed your insane micro and multitasking: thank you!
Didn't know he was still playing.
I'm looking forward to his WCS S1 championship!
His name was QXC, You probably heard him.
QxC vs. HuK casted by husky was the first game of SC2 I ever saw on youtube.
StarCraft has become more of a job than an activity of passion.
Since you're a 'professional e-gamer', welcome to the real world in which the majority of the workforce probably feels a bit more negative about their job.
It's an understandable decision, surely.
Hope qxc comes back for LotV better than ever!

Being a Starcraft progamer doesn't pay much. What's wrong with him saying that he doesn't enjoy the game anymore and, if he's going to be doing a job, it might as well be one what allows him more financial freedom?

The main reasons I decided to stay in it through WCS are that 1) my skill is actually pretty high right now compared to how it's been in the past, despite the notable hiccups of iem taipei qualifiers and iem san jose + the event is pretty soon so I hope to do reasonably well
2) due to region locking, the competition will be weaker.
These factors mean that it's a pretty good opportunity to make one last performance for my fans and myself before stepping out.

QXC GSTL all kill, NEVAR FKING FORGET!!
Plz dont leave QXC i would miss you so much TnT.

I understand everything you are saying about the game. Friends stop playing. Isn't as fun anymore. More like a job. And I am only someone who plays after work and on weekends.
I'd be sad to see you go but, would like to suggest that maybe you try playing original Starcraft again and see if you can't get just a bunch of enjoyment out of it? Or maybe Warcraft 3 ... or some other RTS. Even a moba I guess. I'd hate to see the skills not put to use somewhere!
Thanks for all of the great games, strats and inspiration. Hope to see you playing again soon after a break, and I'll be pulling for you in WCS s1
I remember the IM all-kill .
Quite reasonable. One can go on so much without the results s/he expects. Best of luck to him in LotV
QXC was my first pro gamer crush. I can understand his reasons. Every player reaches a point where passion just isn't enough fuel to keep going. But man oh man, QXC been fighting a long time. I truly believe he's one of those players with huge amounts of raw talent and innovation. He's the kind of guy who's untouchable in a beta. We already seen glimpses of it in his LOTV showmatch vs Kas. Good luck in WCS. QXC Fighting!!
I love QXC's analytical commentaries. =D

Haha loved that comment. Infamous. Big fan of QXC used to enjoy watching him stream. It's hard to deny that SC2 isn't very fun right now for whatever reason, but the other side of me that has struggled to master a craft for many years has wondering is he quitting at the wrong point? I know the difference between my passionate moments for my craft and the struggle and frustration and the truth is, I make very little progress when its enjoyable, those are the moments I am in my comfort zone. I didn't start getting good until I realized it was never going to be fun when I was improving, it was just going to feel like work and pain and not in a romantic way, like motivational posters make it seem, in a way that makes you want to find excuses and procrastinate, overeat from the stress of starting, binge, anything but start the painful path your on. I had to find a balance, between hard work and comfort zone work, and the balance is still a struggle and the work still sucks, but if you really want it, you keep pushing.
I also took big breaks though as well, sometimes they are needed and it is a video game, there isn't a huge future in it unless you win big.

This is the best time for any pro to break from sc2. I wouldn't be surprised if more gamers follow him. I hope many take the opportunity to see family and friends since the game basically gets a reset come beta anyway.
I remember being up at the buttcrack of dawn (US EST) for that GSTL all-kill of IM. I was at the edge of my seat in that final game against MVP.
best of luck, QXC. I look forward to your return in LotV

Sad, one of the biggest staple players of NA season gone for the time being... you can take the player out of starcraft, but you cant take starcraft out of the player...
See you soon Qxc.
I feel that it's really frustrating to be a foreign progamer that struggles with results and I for one don't have the mental fortitude to even become a progamer because of the uncertainty it brings with the territory.
Good luck to you sir, I loved your casts last year when things got bland with the same set of casters doing every major event.
I dont post often, but when I saw this, I felt I had to. QXC has been hands down one of my favorite players to watch, both in competition and his stream. I hope he goes far in WCS and changes his mind possibly to stay in SC2. Hes crazy smart and i love to hear the informative, uber descriptive casting from him.
Wow, I've been really impressed with his recent run so I was expecting him to really push with the momentum, but I can see why he would want to take a break from the scene too. Here's to hoping that qxc wins WCS season 1!
Blizzard needs to support the game more
Im disappointed by this but ok -- im respecting the man's decision. Get that much needed rest qxc, have fun casting and get back in lotv (tbh you're a fantastic analytic caster, i mean literally absolutely amazing, also i miss those qxc player intros).

QXC! I truly hope he comes back for LotV stronger than ever. That guy always impressed me by the way he played and especially by the way he tried to make terran work in completely unconventional ways (notably with ghost and ravens in completely unexpected cases).
Also, never forget IM all-kill
QXC will always be the epitome of the foreigner to me. He's good, and he plays solid but he always ends up making a mistake. He's always relevant, plays in nearly every qualifier and qualifies for some top tier tournaments but always gets knocked out just before the big money. He is constant struggle to be better but can never quite make it to that point, something goes wrong (up 2-0 and crumbles into 3-2, Super far ahead in a TvT but then makes that one blaring mistake). But Damn if he didn't give it his all.
Like I said before, the first game versus Bomber was really close, either way I hope time off of SC2 will help him with the burnout. GLHF!
If he gets seeded into WCS season 2, I hope he reconsiders. But it's completely understandable to want to wait until LotV. It's honestly hard to motivate myself to play HotS ladder when I can just hit up my friends to play the LotV fanmade custom map that we all enjoy so much more. And there will probably be even greater improvements by the time the actual beta comes around.
good luck qxc
that irony, since we have region lock, many better foreigner players dont play this game anymore (for a timeframe).
Best of luck Kevin. Always been one of NA's best Terrans and I've enjoyed following your career.
Best of luck! Hope you can put up a good show in the last season of WCS!
I will always remember him for all killing IM.
QXC – quite a likeable player.
Well, he will return for LOTV as most players, that means he will probably be taking a 3-6 month break. Do not see the need for drama here.
No real surprise. Qxc has been playing for long but no real achievements except for MLG
Nice that will save some keyboards for Lotv and also hope that Qxc invent some new lotv op build is always there.

Oh right, Keyboards around the world rejoice as Qxc announces a break
Never forgot his IM all kill
Love qxc. He was one of my favorites when I was really grinding to get to Masters (I plateaued at top8 diamond unfortunately) and still following the scene super closely. I really hope he comes back more motivated than ever for LotV, because I think he has the talent and mindset to make impressive strides as a foreigner.
Watching his stream recently I feel this was pretty expected. It seems like he's lost a majority of his passion and desire to play SC2 in it's current state.
Breaks are good. Good luck to him this season, and have fun in your time off.
Hope he can come back stronger than ever in Legacy.

I have noticed that these breaks have been killer to players...I hope for qxc that LotV comes out soon
Would love for QXC to win WCS Season 1 or at least get very far. Gogo
No more scanning the island I remember tunning into Qxc's stream for the first time back in WoL and that was on scrap station when scanning the island became popular. Hope Qxc goes far into wcs!
You had a good run.
Will always be one of my favorite players. If only they hadn't nerfed ghosts.
Hope to see more of you in the future!
Well it's all the more reason to cheer QXC on!
Ever since the beta I've been a fan of QXC, hope you wreck WCS this season!

Hope you have a great run in WCS and hope to see you in LotV!
gl hf, in life and in game.
QXC has lasted quite a long time...I think he's been around since the start. I would be surprised if he decides to continue playing SC2 for much longer after LOTV. I hope he gets a chance to play some other fun games on his break, or explore a new career! Follow Scarlett's footsteps
Qxc is one of the coolest guys I've seen in the scene since I've been around and this is probably exactly what he needs. I wish the best for him.
Grats to qxc for qualifying for WCS America Challenger on his first attempt, including beating puCK in the final match.
