Apparently Squirtle has decided to retire, after not receiving any offers to his liking.

This makes me very sad I'm been waiting so long for him to regain his old form. It wasn't likely, but it was nice to be hopeful, now we all know he's never going to claim that GSL title he came so close to

Damn some of my favorite SC2 memories involve watching Squirtle. Squirtle vs Mvp forever.

Good luck with whatever you're doing. Thanks for the games

I think you underestimate both their marketability and their skill. Squirtle had kind of faded away in the past year or so, whereas DRG and Soulkey are having mild resurgences. DRG in particular is fantastic at playing up the crowd, which is a skill that greatly helps progamers find sponsorship.

Sucks. Was hoping he would play for Startale like Bomber and Parting are planned to do. Well whatever suits him I guess. It's always weird learning about retirements through things like Facebook posts. Why don't some players just out right say they retire?

Aye, they are definitely hotter grabs, by a significant margin. DRG especially, I agree. But it's becoming a realllly long time at this point. And we've also seen lots of recent free agents go to teams that are surprisingly low-brow, considering the caliber of those free agents. The market place looks bad. I mean, Squirtle couldn't even find something satisfactory enough for him to keep playing the game, although it's ambiguous exactly what can be read into that.

Noo :'( I was fairly new to the scene when I started watching Squirtle. I'm going to miss him MKP and ForGG resurgence has made me kinda happy though, hope to see some awesome DRG and Creator games in the future.

Really hope the old guard will stand strong even through so many retirements this year.

I was terran before mvp vs squirtle. after these games i switched to protoss. squirtle has been my favourite player ever since and im really sad to see him go this is the saddest retirement of sc2 history for me, so sad he couldnt get a huge tournament win he definitely deserved.
Good luck in the future Park Hyun Woo!

Squirtle never got that premiere after coming close three times. Everyone will always remember his finals vs Mvp, but here's another one of the best games ever involving him.

I still remember being at the 2012 GSL Season 2 finals vs Mvp. I remember seeing Mvp's face when Squirtle pulled that spectacular 3 game comeback. The first person ever to shake Mvp in a GSL final and first to bring the King of Wings to a game 7.

Aww, I always thought he would have won more badges first. Not a lot of winnings either really, it's a shame. Maybe if winnings in SC2 has risen earlier he'd have gotten more.
I hope he goes on to do something that makes him very happy. :')

As a Protoss player, Squirtle's play never really inspired me. It was too much turtling/timing attacks with Colossus.
He was much like our current Rain, but in times where going macro as Protoss wasn't as viable.

But we should never forget that great GSL run and his EPIC run at IPL4, the trial of stamina.
He went through Open bracket which was countless matches, then groups, then he quickly lost to Nestea in Winners bracket, to drop down in losers bracket and fight the entire way back to the finals. To then win the first bo5 and the cruelty of the tournament made it so that he had to win yet another bo5 vs Alive... Who honestly could do that?

He surely was during that IPL - GSL span (though he didn't won any of them, but that was near soO level of dominance + fail to get a title, just on a shorter period).

It's sad because you're wrong. Mentioning "the" GSL 2012 season two finals game will always make people think about Mvp vs Squirtle, not just of Mvp. Because the two ended up playing one of the most insane game we've ever seen in Starcraft 2 (which is always mentioned in those top 10/20/30 games of all time).

It was not just the performance of Mvp vs someone playing meh, or an unknown. It was the performance of a then declining Mvp, that everyone called out each round of this GSL, that managed to get to the finals with broken wrists, only to face one of the most incredible players at that time, who just went back from an IPL run many consider an insane feat (going all through the open bracket into the finals and even winning the first set, playing and winning so much games in such a short timespan).

History is not always written by the winners. Do you remember who won IPL4? Everyone knows about Squirtle 2nd place at this event, but many people forgot it's been won by aLive...

I also bet that in a few months (~8 I'd say), many people will remember about 2014's soO, but will have to check to remember against whom he lost...

Very sad indeed, not only did I live with Squirtle for a while we also had a lot of fun travelling to events. Sorry that the news came over a Facebook message rather than a public announcement.

I was unable to find the correct fitting team for Squirtle and he made this decision - which I respect.

Next time I am in KR we have already planned to meet up! Will try get something from him for TL!

Dno if Alive happened, Squirtle won the first series. I'd say he was just too fatiqued to even try for the second bo5.

zactly.

Will be missed tt.

edit: Just to expand a bit. I have a couple friends who have both played SC2 but maintain zero interest in it. However, somehow -god knows how, I don't think I could do it again- I got them both to watch the MVP vs Squirtle finals during a LAN session. They were both really impressed, enjoying it from start to finish.
But he is never making short-term prediction, everyone of his prediction are based on fundenmentals, but he doesn't exactly know when it will happen... So using these kind of narrowed "who-is-right" empirical analysis makes little sense.

Nooooo! :'( He was one of the head geniuses behind Protoss innovation. I thought he played more intelligently than most and I always really wanted him to win a GSL to make up for that painful 2nd place to MVP.

It even seemed unfair for PartinG to steal so much of his spotlight due to better mechanics.

He was one of my 5 favourite players and the main reason I started supporting Startale after oGs disbanded :/. A lot of the Koreans I found it easier to support are leaving the pro SC2 scene T.T.

My absolute favourite player from sc2, this news is heartbreaking even though I have not played for a year and a half.

Still remember the days when Startale had a 3 protoss core- Squirtle, Parting and Ace, with Parting having the strongest PvT but Squirtle being the most balanced and complete player. I loved his play, his peak happened when I started enjoying watching sc2 pro games. I always hoped he'd win a tournament, like ANY tournament, but it was not meant to be (I know he won a relatively minor one recently, long after I stopped watching sc2).

The BC vortex will always be the best moment no matter how people try to criticize it being overrated.

Hope he comes back for LotV

Aw shit :/

I meet Squirtle at the first Dreamhack I went to, DHS13, he was super chill, I got to take a picture with him and everything and he wasn't shy at all.

Ever since his GSL final against Mvp I have waited for his next big turnup, he was truly a cleaver and creative player.

Sad that GSL 2012 was his peak, however really happy that he got that far and that we got to experience such a cool and dynamic final because of him.

Like honestly that archon toilet is one of the god damn benchmarks of GSL, and everyone should be thankful to Squirtle that he could put on such an amazing show.

Good Luck in the future dear water Pokémon!

You were the coolest!

So I just remembered a picture one of my few starcraft playing friends sent me a long time ago.

I warn you, it's very disturbing.

Hello, TeamLiquid!

(I'm posting this here, because the forum software does not allow me to create a new thread for it...)

I have made a little tribute to Squirtle, and I'm releasing it as a Christmas present to all his fans.
It's available here.
