SC2, WoW and Hearthstone to be shown on ESPN3. That's 5 ESPN's better than pro dodgeball at least!

Well the good news is WoW isn't particularly exciting to watch for most people and the ones who do watch it will have already played it, so mission been accomplished. Hearthstone has as much curb appeal to a casual audience as your neighborhood crackhouse does, because who the fuck wants to watch cards fight each other?

So hopefully this will be SC2's chance to pull in a little spotlight.

I don't know much about ESPN3, is this a 'real' TV channel or an Internet-only channel that is owned by ESPN? Also isn't it the channel that broadcasted part of TI4? Good news anyway (:

It's a satellite TV thing I think. And ya, TI4 was on it, so apparently that did well enough that they're willing to try other games.

Hey that's so awesome! Good for sc2 I love that, no clue how people who have never watched wow will understand it. Played every expansion in arena a lot and it is still terribly complicated even if you have not played that season. Not a problem with sc2 since its actually more of a spectator game, super hyped because these matches are very promising too. Stoked!

I guess I should be clear on what I meant by a casual audience on a sports station, I mean older teens into young adults. I think Hearthstone's audience is right up there with the Minecraft youtube audience (kids).

On the other side of things, didn't Sundance mention maybe getting MLG on ESPN 3 oh so many years ago

I'm really not sure what the true demographic for Hearthstone is. I kind of imagine it's pretty diverse myself but I'm not sure, sort of like MtG.

Interested to see how it does on Espn3. I have never actually watched the channel or heard of any content being on it, but it will be cool to see Blizzcon on it!
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

It is pretty diverse. For example my comp sci prof and his seven year old daughter both play hearthstone . The demographic is different from MtG though, since Hearthstone is a much younger game and also easier to get into. There's a lot more people who fit in the casual demographic of a sports station and play Hearthstone than most people would think. Not sure if they'd watch it though.

So were looking at Hearthstone and one WoW event besides the SC2 event...I think this is still really good for SC2 but I don't know that all the people watching will like SC2 as much as WoW and Hearthstone lol...

Hoping for the best though! Blizzard obviously trying to do some big things.

This isn't quite the place to ask but I don't want to make a thread - so I know WCS is going to be streamed for free, but what about HS and Heroes? Do I need the virtual ticket or are those free as well?
Refer to my post.

And I think you don't realize how out of touch you are with the audience for that game. Hearthstone's audience is anyone who has played world of warcraft or magic the gathering, which combine into a massive demographic that is much broader and wider reaching than that of our beloved starcraft.

yep, hearthstone is a pretty fun game even, sometimes the RNG can be frustrating, but there are moments of intense strategical play or crazy RNG fun.

SC2 is by far the best spectator sport (of these 3 at least). Don't let streaming numbers fool you. I don't doubt SC2 will benefit the most from this kind of exposure.

Well, Hearthstone streams tend to get like 50k viewers, so a lot of people do apparently :/

It's a satellite TV thing I think. And ya, TI4 was on it, so apparently that did well enough that they're willing to try other games.

And I think you don't realize how out of touch you are with the audience for that game. Hearthstone's audience is anyone who has played world of warcraft or magic the gathering, which combine into a massive demographic that is much broader and wider reaching than that of our beloved starcraft.

Not just WoW. Warcraft in general. Personally I play it off the back of W3 that I used to play as a teen all those years ago.

That being said of the three I think SC2 is in the best position as its probably the best of the three as a spectator sport; so that should help the numbers considerably. Whether any of them will turn into players or more long term followers... *shrug* Who knows?

Great to see that SCII is slowly getting the "Professional e-Sports" status outside of Korea, hopefully we see more televised stuffz in the future.

ESPN3 is usually found in "extended" cable packages through your cable TV provider. Basically it's a premium TV channel. It also streams directly online I believe...

You have to keep in mind, people like to watch stupid things.

When WoW had even more players, they would get maybe 30k viewers(except for blizzcon maybe), when it was an established eSport.

Now the playerbase is reduced and eSport in WoW is waaay less consistent(it's only really a tournament at blizzcon, that is it). It has never been exciting as an eSport, and never will be

It's a streaming service that requires you to have an ESPN subscription through a cable/satellite provider to access. Which pretty much defeats the entire purpose of being a streaming service.

I played WoW for almost 8 years and never cared for it as a spectator sport. It sucks as a spectator sport.

Yeah WoW is horrible for a mainstream viewer experience. I played WoW and arena before, but I didn't understand 50% of what was going on when I watched an arena match at IEM. It's really freaking complicated. Starcraft 2 is really simple in comparison and a way better spectator experience. The concept of gathering resources, building 2 armies and trying to defeat the enemy is simple enough (also most people played C&C or AoE at some point), but WoW arena is just crazy.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Wait is it running concurrently with the football above it on the schedule, or is it Blizzcon first and then football games second?

=(

Before I got addicted to TL when WoL came out, I was compulsively on Arenajunkies for the WoW arena PvP scene. I think there used to be WoW arena 3v3 at IEM, WCG, and MLG, besides just Blizzcon.

The games themselves were/are a bit of a clusterfuck, but the storylines were pretty fun to follow, and I have good memories of the tournament LRs, blogs, forums, and drama, though overall it was more underdeveloped, immature, and drama-filled than the SC scene.

Hearthstone is a much better eSport viewer experience, and being F2P I'd expect that game to get the most bump from ESPN coverage out of the three. Even so, ESPN got plenty of negative tweets from traditional sports fans when it showed TI4, and I'd imagine the same thing will happen now.

People love watching Poker, HS casts remind me quite a bit of the mind-game / predictive parts of Poker events on TV so I don't see why not?

Besides, people have always watched Magic on Twitch or on TV (when it was on TV that is) and as others have mentioned, HS is probably the #2 game streamed on Twitch now anyways.

There's your problem right there. You can't use your own perspective and apply it to a crowd. After all, professional poker is popular, no?

the real thing here is that everybody needs to open the espn 3 stream if they can. there needs to be as many viewers on as possible. even if you watch the stream through twitch, put the espn stream on in the background. espn has more money than they know what to do with. sc2 needs to tap into that and the only way to do that is to show viewer numbers. espn 3 is a legitimate source of income for a lot of sports, you just need to show the numbers. as a fan of lesser popular division 1 college conference I can say I've utilized espn 3 a lot to get to view my favorite team play. The conference has also leveraged their viewer numbers to increase the amount of money they can get. sc2 can work a similar model.
