I had the pleasure of seeing the exact moment Mal realized that embellishment (and that's all I this, embellishment, not falsification) was better than word-for-word translation. He was translating the Top 8 of WCS last season, and one of the players (I wanna say it was Alicia) actually didn't finish their sentence in responding to the question. Mal, put on the spot, trailed off into a completed thought. Once he was offstage, he modestly and awkwardly said "The next time one of them doesn't finish their sentence, I'll...I'll, uh, finish it for them." From there, he's gotten better and better.
