Today Chris "ChanmanV" Chan announced his retirement. For three years, Chanman ran shows like "Pro Corner," "Climbing The Ladder," as well as "Value Town," "Wednesday Night Sprites," and "Unfiltered."
Chris was a diligent, consistent worker who ran his shows for a long time with low viewers and provided countless hours of entertainment for those in the StarCraft scene and later on in the Hearthstone community.
Over time, his shows gradually became better known and gained many viewers. While he did make a mistake with using bot accounts to get banned from Reddit, fans and the community viewed Chanman and his many years of contribution favorably.
At TL, we wish him luck in his future endeavors and hope he stays in the scene if his shows do not continue.
Pity. He's been a great source of content across many games for quite a few years. But, of course, as he's quickly approaching 40, he may just have other priorities now.
Either way, he will be dearly and sorely missed by the community.
Well this is sad. I looked forward to seeing unfiltered every week. His reason for stopping is understandable. I hope Richard Lewis continues doing some shows of some sort he's always makes interesting points while being entertaining.
Aw damn that sucks. But perhaps Unfiltered doesn't have to die with him, maybe Destiny could pick it up as the host or something. But regardless, good luck Channelman!
Wowow that is really sad to hear. This guy had so much dedication to the scene and put up with a lot of crap, and through all the drama stayed strong and provided content to us all.
I wish him luck in the future, and thank you for everything.
thanks for everything over the past few years Chanman. quality stuff for a very long time, definitely a loss for the scene but it looks like it's for the best for him.
I hope they come back together like once a month to talk about favourite stuff they've seen/done in the meatime. Unless he means to give up following e-sports entirely... :/
I looked forward to watching Unfiltered every week, sad to see it come to an end. I respect him wanting to be there for his family more and watch his kids grow up, that is commendable. I hope another show might fill the void left behind. Best of luck Channelman!
Sad to hear it's over. Perhaps things will change or someone else will run a show like it in its stead. It's neat to hear about the news regarding multiple games in a low-bullshit environment even though I'm not personally invested in them, just as a take for what's going on with the genre as a whole.
To put so much time and effort into something for so long and then give it up once you actually get recognized for the good work you do and get a lot of viewers in order to spend time with your family really speaks to what kind of man Chanman is. Thanks for all the shows and countless hours of entertainment Unfiltered has brought me. gg
I'm surprised that not one or two but ALL of his show are gone. I mean he had like 4 or 5 show per week and even if he kept going with one, he still would have more freetime than before... I guess ?

He said he's keeping Deck Wars going for now because of a obligation to Machinima. But with esports everything happens on the weekend so if you want to keep up with scenes you've got to spend your weekend watching stuff instead of with your family.
That sucks. Wasn't really a fan persay (I generally only watched the VoDs if TB was on) but shows like Unfiltered were and still are a needed part of the community so it always sucks when they go. But I can definitely understand why and I wish nothing but the best for him
too bad to see him retire like this? When he started to get somewhat "big" sad to see but gl chanmanV in the future! And maybe you will comeback for some more starcraft/hearthstone action!
Very sad to see him go. He was one of the few people who helped bring attention to the mapmaking community here on TL. Best of luck in the future, Chanman!
As bastions of the community find they can't do it anymore, for whatever reason, it's important to remember that there are still so many people with just as much passion and just as much dedication ready to step up. We lost a JP, but there's a Feardragon who'd love to help out. We lose a Chanman, but there's still a NanMan. Slasher and Wheat will keep doing their part. Even established names are getting into the act - desRow has his own show now too. They may not be the same faces we know. They may not have the same production quality - yet, at least. But they have the same dream that the Chanimal had when he started. They want to get the community talking. And if enough people tune in, I think they will.
We'll always appreciate all that ChanMan has done for us, but as we see what is lost, we must look to what's still there. It's the cycle of any organism - one goes, another grows. It's beautiful. The essence never truly goes away, merely takes on a different form. So guys, take a look around. There are some cool people who'd love to do their part in filling the gap that's been left.

Well, there are a fair number of people. There'll probably be a few others popping up, but there are plenty of people doing shows now.
You want a Pro Corner? Well, there's a Breaking Out.
Looking for Climbing the Ladder? How does Remax sound? No? What about Inside the Game? Or once in a while, maybe some Meta?
Want some Unfiltered? Well, there's a Live On Three for that.
Maybe you're looking for Hearthstone, missing Value Town and Deck Wars. Well, there's Turn2 and all manners of Kings of various Hills.
It's a tribute to Chanman's creativity, dedication, and unbelievable work ethic that this many people and shows are all just filling one person's void. But we, as a community, will do what we've done with anything else we've lost: We'll compensate for it. We'll find new great shows, hosted by other great people. And we'll remember how great a contribution were made by people like Chanman.

He's almost 40? Wow. As an Asian myself, I definitely hope I can look/sound like I'm still in my late 20s when I'm almost 40.
My personal opinion is, he was never a good host. He just didn't have the charisma and knowledge that a good host needs. I never enjoyed watching his shows, facepalming at so many of his comments. Didn't care much about his reddit bots either, that just showed he was really desperate for getting attention, which I think was the main reason for making his shows. When the hater community slowly grew and chat was spammed by "FailFish" more than constructive comments, I think he acknowledged it was not worth it running the shows anymore.
WOW I cannot believe how much negativity there is in these comments. Thanks for Unfiltered Chanman, it was extremely entertaining and a great source of info for a whole variety of games! You will be sorely missed!
Chris if you're reading this, thanks for your contributions to the community man. I was just thinking yesterday about how I miss climbing the ladder. Enjoy spending time with your family! Hope we continue to see you around as part of this big esports family as well!
People, you deserve to be honest but... do you ever think before you type? I mean its no wonder the game died if everyone in the community gets shit on, I think there's more tactful ways to say good bye then 'thats okay he sucked anyway'. Back in 2010 we could be cavalier with our words because there was a nonstop stream of fresh meat but I can't see people wanting to enter this community to refresh it if thats the treatment they get.
"I can't wait to be a SC2 streamer where I can get no respect ever and get outright hated whenever I want to take a break!" - said nobody ever
Chris - I've seen every Unfiltered and it has helped my work commute immensely. Thank you so much for your work from the bottom of my heart, and I will miss you. =(

Didn't say it was dead, just that it was dieing, and there is a reason that "dead game" is used in every thread.
dude produced free content which people enjoyed. ill never understand why people have to shit on things just because theyre outside their interest. i guess it makes small people feel big to destroy sources of joy for others
as for twitch botting, who fucking cares. if the dude had tools at his disposal to increase his success and he used them, fine. if it's not unlawful then he can do what he wants
I only watched him a couple times, but he was definitely a positive influence in the community. His shows were really well done too. Best of luck to him.

it wasnt about the money.. he just had no time for his personal life and wasnt happy anymore because he missed alot of things in his family (at least that's what i understood from his statement); he was basically to busy with his work and had no time to relax

No viewer bots but reddit ones to upvote his content. ---
It is a sad day that we lose a man that gave us so many good shows. Even if I felt like his role as a host on Unfiltered wasn't enough to keep Lewis in check at times and the somewhat weird adventure to making it a eSports wide show he gave us CONSISTENT content.
Chanman, needless to say this is sad news for many of us. But I want to speak on behalf of many within the "silent majority" in saying that we truly appreciate everything you did for this community and many others. I support and respect you in your decision to focus more on your life, because you put in so much time into all of your shows. In fact it seemed like so much time that I don't even know how you had time for family at all!
Even though there was overlap, Unfiltered was the show that for me, kind of took over after State of the Game ended (at least being a weekly thing). And I remember the viewership being extremely small a while back, but what I respect the most about what you did was the fact that you stuck with it. And it became something! You are proof that someone relatively unknown but who is passionate about something within a scene can actually contribute in great ways, and that is something I will never forget.
I know I'll be watching vods of your stuff for a long time. You gave a platform for some great people to talk. I would have never known about Richard Lewis and his great work if not for the show because I mostly pay attention to Starcraft stuff. I already knew about Destiny, but it was so cool to hear his opinions on stuff too.
Good luck Chanman, and thank you so much for everything. <3
Retiring from doing those shows or retiring from the scene completely? I mean... ChanMan still casting hearthstone tournaments? ChanMan still playing hearthstone (semi) competitively? Can anyone fill me in on the information I've missed? Didn't get to watch today's show
You will be missed Chanman, your shows were the best non bullshit shows out there along side with Lo3 imo. And I hope RLewis and Destiny will host their own show or something, love listening to them.
This is so sad. I remember that recent post-DH episode when it look like Chris was on a ridiculous high (with the big casting gig). I imagine the ensuing drama taking a lot out of him. I feel terrible as a "silent viewer" now, because watching Unfiltered has become routine and I've taken it for granted.
Hopefully everyone in the show reads all comments and understand they were beloved. You guys made my weekdays a bit more enjoyable and best of luck to whatever you do in your future.
He tried for a really long time to become relevant and never really managed to do that. Like others before him he also probably spent a lot of time and money on this stuff.

I would say that he was significantly relevant. His shows were one of the few that I watched in the scene. There's going to be a big gap without him
Never heard of him (at least in the past 3 years), but I do remember a name on Bnet like that which got like over 10000 wins with 0 losses and a few disconnects. The part where the botting was mentioned makes me start to think this was him... and also his age makes me believe it even more.
A true professional who understood that consistency & perseverance can take you a long way. I hope you'll stick around ChanmanV as any community needs people like you.
Thank you for all the entertainment you've provided. Good Health and the Best of Luck to you and your family.
I can't imagine anyone taking Chanman's place. Many people criticized him for his hosting, but I think he was a natural. I started off watching Unfiltered for the Starcraft content and by the time he switched the focus to include other games and brought on colorful characters like Richard Louis to co-host I was hooked. I'm completely uninterested in other games besides sc2, but his brilliant presentation made unfiltered a joy to listen to every week. Sadly, all good things come to an end.
What? O.O I didn't see this coming at all. Went to bed before the show was over yesterday, had no clue that the promised announcement would be such a shocker Really sad to see this happen, I loved his shows a lot, especially Unfiltered. The Chanman-Destiny combo is the absolute best. <3
Thanks for everything, Chanman! Best of luck in the future ^^
Grab IM and do a huge deadman's party, Chanman! Didn't watch your shows, and I said "godspeed" already earlier, but you always seemed to be a well mannered, nice person. And wut, you're almost 40?! Go play some videogames and actually have fun now!
Fuck... Sad to hear this. I've watched every episode, and unfiltered really filled the void that sotg left when that ended.
Like sotg, it was something I looked forward to watching every week, but all good things come to an end I guess. I hope this won't be the end of Destiny/Richard in talk shows, would be cool to see them continue doing them, maybe start up a new one together.
I really enjoyed watching unfiltered every week for the past year or so. Ever since shows like SOTG, ITG, meta slowed down or ended it was one of the few places where you could hear a legit discussion about important issues.
Hopefully Richard/Destiny will continue podcasting so that we can all continue to hear their thoughts going forward.
I´ve watched so much of your shows Chanman and its has been a blast. I myself have tried to host shows only one time a week but it takes so much time. Preparing the content, inviting guests, keeping it all interesting and having to handle all the different stuff that always happens.
You did the right choice and I hope that we´ll see more of you in the future. Also a honor meeting you at Dreamhack Summer this year.

It's pretty sad that making a few reddit accounts to get your announcements to #19 of the already content starved /r/starcraft subreddit is treated like it's a serious breach of ethics. Who cares about reddit etiquette? (that site should burn anyway)

some fringe scientists have suggested that this may be related to the social phenomenon of exchanging money for food, shelter, goods and services. more data is required before any conclusions, but i think it's a concept with merit!

While true if he could of made a living purely off esports it would probably of been easier to stay active and spend time with the family at the same time. Esports just really isn't at that level for the rank and file, only the top few who have a huge viewership for their stuff or some kind of salary deal with someone. So I'm sure the fact that you can't make a living off esports doesn't help out when you want to spend time with your family and have a 9 to 5.

botting on reddit. upvoting own content downvoting competitors content. get banned. stopped doing shows. i am not dissapointed in him doing this. it what i expected because of his passport.
i will miss unfilterd. i turned in because of the people he was able to bring on the show. a huge achievment. it was the best esports show for long time. it was like lo3 back in the days with scoots before it went into this soft version and not really talking and more dodging. and esports needs such a show in my opinion.
i wish him all the best. not a great entertainer but able to get people together and thats worth more.
Great guy, great shows. I am sad that he went all or nothing. Why not give unfiltered to Destiny and host value town every other week so that he has a lot more time for his family while not completly abandon us all? :<

I was warned and told to read the whole topic before looking ignorant, even though I made a possible connection from age, name, and history of events added to personal experience from 15 years ago (doubting the person who warned me was aware of these days). D: I was there back then, so I remember old Bnet names, and this one was popular with thousands of wins and ZERO losses. Just a possible connection, not trying to take some sort of jab like most of the other posts that were warned. No hatred here towards the dude.
Seems like a good family man and I hope he enjoys his free time with his kids

So you're saying Chanman used to farm free wins in BW? I don't understand your post.
