Challenger ended today with qxc receiving a walkover victory against Minigun after Minigun failed to show up for the match on time. The admins were unable to get in contact with Minigun for today's matches and qxc was awarded the Premier League spot. The match had already been delayed from the 3rd play day of WCS AM Challenger as Minigun had just been discharged from the hospital. The groups were announced after the DQ.

12 Zerg, 11 Protoss, 9 Terran. Dat balance.

E probably is closest to a group of death though A and G are strong groups too.

GOGO Huk, Masa and Hendralisk! Shame Scarlett couldn't make it or we could have the great Canadian lineup all in there.

Go JaeDong! My heart says Jaedong (though Heart probably wants Heart).
For my own personal desires, I want Bomber or Polt to win it or make finals. I need more builds and tactics to copy for my own Terran laddering.

Can't wait for it to start!
I used to play random, but for you I play very specifically.

Man Major aaaaaaaaalways gets a good korean terran in his groups. No group looks extremely deadly other than E and I think Hyun and JD are clear favorites there.

Excite! I love WCS AM for the sheer variety and diversity. Of course WCS EU has many nations as well, but since they all pretty much play on the EU server, there isn't the same diversity in the metagame. What will happen in WCS AM is anyone's guess, and that makes it exciting!

it's a shame we weren't able to get an SEA player outside of Taiwan in this season. It seems like it's been a while since we've had like an Australian or New Zealand player in premier.

I agree it would have been nice to get in an Aussie or Kiwi. I really think inexperience/pressure really cost Iaguz and PiG these last two seasons, as they were both up 2-0 and ended up losing overall. Also, Petraeus (arguably the strongest SEA player), missed out on qualifying to Challenger league both seasons by one game. Hopefully we'll get some SEA representation next season.

well lets hope TI4 compendium makes so much money that they will think about playing the qualifier on LAN for TI5. It will just increase the quality of games. And as TI2 compendium payed for all the TI2 costs it...who knows.

Those groups, holy shit.
HerO can actually drop out second time in a row in Ro32 as well as Jaedong. Will be sick :D
And Suppy can make it out.

TI3, there were no compendiums for TI2, 2012 wasn't as rich for DotA :D

I'm both very happy for Hendralisk and sad for Scarlett. It's the luck of the draw though.

That group E is gonna be a must watch. I quite excited for that.

Dude that group E... Will definitely be amazing to watch, but will be a heartbreaker too. I'm not a big fan of Jim, but seeing a player among Hyun, Jaedong and Heart go out in the ro32 will really feel strange.

Second time in a row that CranK ends up in a group with Bomber, weird. Hoping that Hendralisk can make it out of his group though, he's been playing amazing lately if team leagues are anything to go by.

Head picks:

Group A: HuK, HerO (torn between Revival and HuK)
Group B: Bomber, Crank (easy picks here)
Group C: Oz, viOLet (I want puCK to make it though...)
Group D: TaeJa, Neeb (Neeb has been rising rapidly)
Group E: HyuN, Jaedong (anything could happen here but I'll go with the favorites)
Group F: Alicia, Illusion (Is Illusion back??)
Group G: Polt, MacSed (sorry MajOr...)
Group H: Sen, Suppy (gogo Suppy)

Because HerO, TaeJa, Polt, Bomber and Jaedong are all B level Koreans...Any one of those guys could still make a solid run in Code S.

"Could" is key word and it's not like Flash, TY, RorO, Curious and so on are B level Koreans. Or, at least it's bad to be a B-level Korean.

You never know how will HerO or Bomber perform, JD won't even pass Code A most likely, TaeJa has wrist issues and Polt is only one who might be lock for Code S in decent conditions from all 5.

I think he meant the overall skill level of 32 players is Code B but of course HerO/Taeja/polt/bomber/jd will reach code A

For Chinese Players, Group D Top:hard to advance. 20% possible Group E Jim: anything would happen in this group, if Jim can keep his PvZ status in 2013, he can easily advance(4-1 Hyun,2-0 Jaedong). 70% possible Group F Toodming: tooming's zvz is awesome, so he can eaisly defeat hendralist, in his group. Only Alicia and Illusion would be his challenge. 50% possible Group G Macsed & Courage. I think only one of both can advance, Major is not so strong to prevent the two Chinese players. But Polt is so strong for them. Group H Xigua. I don't think he can advance, if this year is 2011, he will advance without any doubt.

Although I'm rooting for the Axiom players to advance, they are an interesting bunch. Each of them now has the potential to either trounce their tougher opponents on a good day (Heart managed to knock out Taeja some season prior) or succumb to weaker ones on a bad day (Ryung...). As a team, they're sturdy enough to be consistent, but getting a deep run alone reveals this individual variance. Of the three here, Alicia has the easiest chance to advance, while both Heart and Crank will face stiff competition from Jaedong, Hyun, Bomber and Nestea in particular, though Jim and Masa are no pushovers either. Toodming, Illusion and Hendralisk may not be semifinalist regulars, but even they may steal first and second.

Also rooting for the Watermelon Zerg, even if the odds are against him, just because the name's awesome!

Group A: This is actually one of the tougher groups to call. While Revival did make it to the Top 4 last season, he did so going 1-2 in matches (and 5-5 in maps) against Protoss. Of course, the one Toss he actually beat was...Huk. And Huk himself beat HerO in the Round of 32 in the last season, increasing his head-to-head record against this Korean Protoss to 3-1 all time in matches and 7-3 in maps. And, of course, we also have Pigbaby, who can do almost anything, and was credited by Huk as the creator of one of the builds he used to win SHOUTCraft America Winter.

Group B: Age is just a number, they say. Well, the Koreans in this group had better hope so, since their average age is 27 and Masa is in some pretty great form right now. Unfortunately for "America Holds!", Bomber has swiftly made this region his home, clearing out Jaedong, the legendary Has, and twice against groupmate Crank. One of the greatest unanswered questions is how much longer the IM non-player Nestea can hang on. With a far from convincing performance in his Challenger series against Iaguz, his chances to beat Masa are slim, let alone Bomber. This group will inevitable come down to Crank and Masa, a battle of two incredibly scrappy, daring players.

Group C: Oz is a player who's had a serious problem with being recognized for all of his efforts. The man was runner-up last season, and yet he's still not a consensus pick to beat the three Americans in his group. It may be attributed to the unorthodox road of players he made it to the finals through - Nestea, Nestea, Heart, Puck, Arthur, Revival. All the same, there's very little reason to believe Oz won't clear this group out with flying colors. The opening match between Violet and Puck has all the makings of a great battle - Puck, the PvZ specialist who beat Hyun in a season where nobody else was able to do the same, and Violet, who broke 2 powerful Protosses in Seed and Huk on his way to his 4th place finish at Lone Star Clash. One of the deciding factors, in my personal opinion, is that Violet has shown a weakness to unorthodox play (see: his Challenger series against Top from last season), which Puck isn't afraid to break out as needed. You may have noticed a lack of Qxc in this group discussion, and that's not by mistake. He's just such a difficult player to predict, as he can crush skulls one day and break his mouse on stage the next. He's a wildcard whose Challenger match wasn't even played, so his results are anybody's guess.

Group D: I'm sure that all the contenders here are grateful to be drawn into a three-player group, but that doesn't mean any of them should assume advancement will come easily. Taeja, as everybody knows, is unbeatable when he's ready, and I don't think a trip to Challenger is on the agenda for his extended farewell tour. He's easily the favorite to win the group, leaving the battle to be between rising North America star Neeb and on-again, off-again star Check. Now, with how little Check's primary league, the TeSL, has Terrans in it, one would figure Check's ZvT wouldn't be the most impressive. Well, one would be wrong, as Check won his spot in Challenger in a thrilling, decisive victory against Ryung, who then promptly turned around and beat eventual champion Life at Dreamhack Bucharest. A quick note regarding the 3-player group comment: Top, being predictably aggressive, never beats anyone in Premier. He's a non-factor, always has been.

Group E: Oh, come on now. Are you serious with this group? Hyun, the defending champion. Heart, the master of upsets. Jaedong, coming off a championship at Lone Star Clash. And Jim, the mysterious Chinese man-crusher. Where to begin? Well, Jim has lost to both Heart and Jaedong in WCS America before. Hyun has impeccable ZvZ, his only real Achilles heel being a Zerg who doesn't play in this region anymore. Jaedong took down Heart in Texas in convincing fashion. But really, no matter what the results are, people won't be surprised, but they will be disappointed that 2 great players got knocked out so incredibly early.

Group F: Illusion is at his best against Protoss these days, showing amazing timings against JYP, Minigun before him, and a white-hot Astrea before him. Against Zerg, he hasn't played much in recorded matches in a while, the one exception being a 2-0 of Suppy on his way to qualify for MLG Anaheim. How will he do against the mysterious Chinese mind-breaker Toodming? Well, it's hard to say. Toodming has played against non-Chinese Terrans at almost no point, beating Masa and Drunkenboi and losing to Heart. The group's clear favorite, Alicia is one of those players who makes casters abuse the word "solid". He can beat you on 1 base, he can beat you on 4 bases. What he can't do, though, is get sent out in this season of ATC, playing only 3 of his team's 44 games so far, scoring a win against Stardust and losses to Kane and the 4th player in this group, a white-hot Canadian Zerg by the name of Hendralisk. Hendralisk has shown to be in top form in all of his matchups, suddenly becoming the ace for Complexity-Dignitas, four-killing powerhouse Axiom, and clean sweeping the most talented woman to ever play the game to claim a spot in Premier. This is one of the groups that can either be a nail-biter or a blowout. Either way, the games will be incredibly good.

Group G: Wait, this doesn't look quite right. This isn't how a group with Major is supposed to work in WCS America. The formula is clear, and it's been followed to a T for 3 straight seasons. Major gets the Korean Terran as his first opponent, beats them handily, faces a Protoss in the Winners Match, gets smacked down, then rematches the Korean Terran again in the final decider match and loses, being knocked down to Challenger where he quickly fights his way right back. This isn't how it works. I blame ESL's group selection. The Protoss is supposed to be in the Winners Match, Major is supposed to be playing against Polt first (who he has beaten before, incidentally, at an IEM qualifier). This variation on the formula will be quite interesting. If I were to describe Macsed's PvT in a word, it would be "infrequent". Again, China doesn't have a lot in terms of Terrans, and that puts a real dent in the chances of Macsed and Courage, though the latter did manage to qualify this season through a 3-0 sweep of a retiring TheSTC. I don't have to say anything about Polt - barring another power outage in Georgia, the Winter Soldier is gonna be clearing out whoever the hell stands in his way.

Group H: The accidental top seed, Arthur, has the good fortune to have a single-race group, which should help him have some very special builds ready. And he'll need them plaing against Xigua, who not only gets to practice his ZvP with his in-house Invictus teammates, but has strong ZvP as it is, taking out HerO in the first round of last season. The other likely beneficiary of this Zerg-heavy group is Sen, whose ZvZ remains in top form, allowing him to make a strong comeback against Guitarcheese to retain his spot. He's also been pretty damn good against Zergs in the TeSL, beating Slam and Ian decisively in the playoffs. The player who probably will have the roughest time in this group is Suppy. He hasn't had a top-level Zerg opponent in a while, and his ZvZ is iffy with his NA counterparts. He does have 2 things going for him, though. He has experience with the Taiwanese, meaning he probably knows a thing or two about Sen, and he has access to the amazing brain trust known only as "Zerg chat". Will that be enough to push him through against this field? It's a tough call.

WCS AM was pretty much played immediately after EU every day of each tournament's bracket. After all 3 of the top Terrans were shockingly eliminated in the same round, Hyun went through Alicia and Oz to win himself the title.

They should really just call it WCS East Asian, out of 32 spots 24 of them (75%) are Korean, Chinese or Taiwanese.
If all men were created equal there would be no reason to declare it.

no faith in Macsed or Courage to beat Major? I agree Polt is the massive favorite in that group, but I would be surprised if Major took down Macsed.

Awww. I was hoping to finally watch an all Korean Ro 16 in WCS AM.
To be honest, majority of Koreans in the tournament are in the twilight of their careers.
I doubt even crowd favorites like Jaedong, Polt, or HerO would make it to Code S this season.
Taeja could if his wrists are better and Bomber probably could.
