So it's basically sponsor money fuelled by donations.

They stand to gain from exposure just like any other sponsor, it's just decentralized.

Bitcoin needs to evangalize not just to increase value, but stay alive.

The more people they can get to believe in Bitcoin, the more value it has. If you have 100 coins, and can convince 50,000 people that they are worth money, they may increase demand, making your coins increase in value, and it's worth your time.

So, makes perfect sense to me. More advertising, more chances at evangalizing, and hopefully Axiom gets something good out of it.

Thanks for your expert business advice.

Well maybe you can enlighten me then... How does a subreddit sponsor a team in a meaningful way? I do not understand.

Doing some research would probably help.

Looks like a lot of close-minded people in this thread are responding overwhelmingly.. which actually surprises me. I think this is great for Axiom and /r/Bitcoin. These are two things of which could not exist without today's technology. I think we'll see more and more virtual currency adaptation in to E-Sports and online gaming in general. It makes sense to use a global currency/commodity available to everyone online, with a game/sport that is also available to the same demographic.

Also, for those responding with comments that bitcoin value is volatile etc etc.. if you look at the full picture, it's value year over year has always been in an upward trend. Not that anyone at Axiom is solely betting on this as some sort of long-term investment, but rather it's a sponsorship, and all they really need is support which is exactly what they are getting!

Yep, the bitterness is silly considering most sponsors don't offer anything valuable anyway and sell things like overpriced peripherals which will totally make you a better gamerTM.

reddit sponsoring a team? that's the first time I see that. Well, I don't think it's a bad thing if they can provide something the team needs.

Still, grats, and let's see what they can bring to the table.

What do you mean? They are obviously giving financial support. What does "let's see what they can bring to the table" mean? They'll bring money, like sponsors in most sports.

Oh, not at all. I'm just a non believer. I have friends who are believers. I just notice that it has a lot to do with faith and evangalizing to increase value. Not anything else. Power perceived is power achieved, and all that. It's nice that you truly believe in it's value. Your belief helps add to it! There's certainly room for more believers and more value too. I just looked at it, and choose to step aside, ignoring all possible gains and losses. I'd rather not be involved in something that is only valuable if everyone involved it in is a good salesman.

All currencies are like that though: money's value is determined collectively. National currencies just have a government that's promised to accept them in return for stuff and maintain their value by not inflating them, but that promise is only as good as the word of that particular government.

As long as it really is cash and not bitcoin.

I'd rather have bitcoin tbh. Getting bitcoin is like getting cash with a sick interest rate.

Sick indeed! About -50% over the past four months....

Well, grats to Axiom, although I wonder how a subreddit can make enough money to sponsor a team... Still, I'm very excited for TB and the rest of the team!

You mean in the ONE month?
Bitcoin basically went from 1k/coin to 400/coin in couple week, even its biggest bitcoin market exchange crashed and went out of business. Its value is around 400-450/coin with no centralized market right now.

At least that was the last time I heard and cared about bitcoin.

Can we start handing out punishments for people that accuse sponsors of illegal activity? This defamatory nonsense helps nobody.

well it is not recognized as currency in some countries, which is the closest to illegality you can get for something that claims to be a currency. It's more speculative than wall street too.
I'm sure a bunch of the biggest esports sponsor have illegal activities too, mainly tax dodging so it's not a precedent either...
