ASUS ROG announces the initial groups for ASUS ROG Winter 2014 with 32 top tier players duking it out for the prize pool of $25 000 USD and 4000 WCS points.
The first group stage of ASUS ROG Winter 2014 starts off on January 31st 2014 at 12:00 GMT (+00:00). It includes 32 high caliber players divided into eight groups of four which are played in WCS style double elimination format with all matches being best-of-5. Only the top 16 players continue to the second group stage which is played in a similar fashion right after the initial groups. The playoffs are played on the second day of the tournament on February 1st starting at 12:00 GMT (+00:00).
Roster changes The first groups have now finally been drawn and we apologise for the delay which is due to late roster changes. Unfortunately Ai.Strelok, Empire.Kas, Acer.Nerchio and Acer.Bly have cancelled their participation to the event. They have been replaced by Alliance.SortOf, Fnatic.Naama, Property.MorroW and Menace.Protosser whom we thank for being available in such a short notice.
Group Stage 1 - January 31, 12:00 GMT (+00:00) The first matches are player 1 vs player 4 and player 2 vs player 3.
Group Stage 2 - January 31, 17:30 GMT (+00:00)
Group A: 1.1 | 8.1 | 4.2 | 5.2 Group B: 2.1 | 7.1 | 3.2 | 6.2 Group C: 3.1 | 6.1 | 2.2 | 7.2 Group D: 4.1 | 5.1 | 1.2 | 8.2
Playoffs - February 1, 12:00 GMT (+00:00)
Ro8 A: A.1 vs B.2 Ro8 B: C.1 vs D.2 Ro8 C: B.1 vs A.2 Ro8 D: D.1 vs C.2
This time we have decided to announce the full tournament layout beforehand and not do any sort of random draw during the tournament. This way we hope to compensate the fact that the group stages are played on the same day, and thus leave little to no time for players to prepare for their individual opponents. With the double elimination groups there should be no real risk of intentional losing for the sometimes more attractive second place, especially when the groups are all played at the same time.
More info For more info about the event please visit www.asusrogtournament.com or read the announcement thread here on TeamLiquid.net. For recent updates please follow @ROGtournament on Twitter.

can't see a real "group of death"... Several easy 1st place picks but a few groups where #2 is up for grabs (on paper - anything can happen tho).
|
Groups looked balanced and fun, especially looking forward to 2 and 8
|
Looks sick! Hopefully no ridiculous winter storms this time
|
Can't wait to see Jaedong crush elfi. :3

Ye, NaNi got a very doable group A good ole game vs ForGG to :D

So many cancellations.. But still it's two less than in Summer 2013. Seems to be a frequent thing. At least none of the top players have pulled out yet.
It's hard to pick the hardest group from these, but let's say Group 7.

Also I hope Life does end up participating.

Cool groups. Looking forward to it.
|
Taeja, Jaedong, Life, Dear - the four top favorites in separate groups. Very good.
|
Wow, I see lots of 6-0's happening in these groups haha :\
|
Daaaamn. That means that someone could potentially play 30 (3 bo5's in each group stage) meaningful games in a single day. The second group stage is going to be cheese central since everyone will be so tired.
|
sick lineup, sick groups. so looking forward to watching this

No real group of death; I would say group 8 is the most even group. Should be a fun one; we could see some upsets here and am looking forward to finally seeing Dear again. Would be shocking if Dear didn't make it out of his group; MAYBE Snute can take him down but other than that...

I am reading correctly that all 8 ro32 groups are being played at the same time? And all ro16 groups aswell?
I hope you have about 20 streams ready

I hope you have about 20 streams ready there were a lot of community streams for summer but this schedule looks even more packed!
|
Learn from this group breakup, Code A. No useless groups, no groups where real bad-asses will go out in first round.
Looks like the RO 16 onward will be stacked.

I hope you have about 20 streams ready You are correct, all groups play at the same time. It's unfortunate, but the tournament is only 2 days compared to the 3 days of the summer event. However, there should be at least one stream per group in the first group stage, and two streams per group in the second group stage. Still, almost half of the Ro32 games will not be streamed as there are 16 matches played at the same time for the first two rounds. Luckily the Ro16 groups should have all games covered by community streams.

You're telling me Naniwa didn't cancel?

Group 1 is group of death.

Seeing that all of the Ukrainians cancelled makes me wonder if it has something go do with the situation over there. :/ Although it's great to see the replacements were found quickly. ^^
|
I think there will be 4 finns in top 4. You heard it here first!
|
Its likely the Ukranian Players were unable to travel due to the current situation in the Ukraine, Ah well

TaeJa, Happy, Jaedong, Life, Dear, HerO & a history of good production value. Life is good.

Very attractive lineup but it sure does suck to lose the Ukrainians as I really do like them all And Nerchio, of course

See how that works so well ?? - 1 being the leader/favourite in the group, 2 being the main contender, 3 being the stronger challenger, and 4 being the less known, or longer forgotten ones
Just hope there aren't too many one-sided owning, and games are good.. Though there certainly gonna be some..
EDIT: Speaking of which - just noticed - where the f*ck is Scarlett.. ? ?

This should be a lot of fun. Jaedong to take it all.

|
No reps for merica, well go JD!
|
Groups look balanced.
Prediction 1: Ret about to come the worst zerg in the world. Prediction 2: Life vs. Dear finals <3

Looking forward to this event since the start of the month. At a glance the groups seem pretty well balanced.
Hope harstem can put out a good performance. Rooting for naniwa to go all the way.

Stream lists are live on the tournament portal! (top right of the tl homepage)
I can't say if every game will be streamed but it also looks like Bischu is a last minute scratch (illness) and group 3 ( Welmu, Life, Kane) will be a round robin!

2014 is year of harstem guys.
