MC, Bomber, KLG.Tunico, and mYi.ABomB have received invites to IEM Sao Paulo, joining eight players from the online qualifiers in the group stage stage of the tournament. The groups are as follows:
According to mYi's pengWin, no other players after MC or Bomber applied for the invite spots (invite spots do not have flights and accomodations paid for, unlike qualifier spots), leading to the somewhat unexpected invitations of Tunico and ABomB.
IEM Sao Paulo will take place between January 28 and February 1st, with the players competing for $25,000 in prize money. It is a WCS Tier 2 event, awarding 4,000 total WCS points as well.

He's from Brazil, so it makes sense to invite a national favorite
No I really don't think it does.
Plane flights to Brazil is expensive...
I hope you're not implying they couldn't find any other pro gamer that would take a free slot in the tournament.
According to Pengwin, aBomb got the spot because nobody else applied for it. So while I think that they always invite one local player, this time it might also be the case that they have no other good foreigner for that spot.

A "free" slot is relative, since all the invites have to pay the flight and accomodation themselves (unlike the qualified people). With a lot of people being already qualified, teamless or at Assembly, flights to Sao Paolo being expensive and with IEM having an application system for invites, it is´nt that weird.
